Highlighted by good eats, good catch, good Wiffle ball and most of all, good folks, the 2008 Dodger Thoughts gathering was a success - in fact, as I write this, it may still be going on.

Special thanks to former Dodger Matt Luke, feel-good story of the 1998 season, for his guest appearance and to the Dodgers for arranging it. Luke showed up and chatted with us in the shade (thankfully) by the picnic tables for a good 45 minutes, which was a treat.

More thanks to BHSportsguy for doing all the legwork organizing the picnic, and to Bob Timmermann for his entertaining trivia quiz – and to both for joining me in offering prizes.

Hopefully, those who continue from the picnic to the game tonight will keep the good times rolling.

I look forward to hearing more about the picnic.

Diamondbacks take advantage of two straight days of awful starting pitching.

5-0 D'Backs Top 1. Backe is about to make his 42nd pitch.

Apparently, playing as much Wii Sports Baseball as I have has given me a decent eye...

The only disappointing part of the Whiffle Ball games were the teams never had official names... I rallied for the West Virginia Troys but it really didn't catch on...

I just woke up from my nap after the wiffle ball game. The picnic was really fun. I didn't know what to expect...possibly something out of a Simpsons episode with everyone talking via our computers at the park benches.

There is no reason this should only be a once a year things. I am thinking 3-4 times a year would be great. We could go by the seasons...the standard ones, not the ones of Southern California.

It was great to meet folks today at the DT picnic, I withdrew myself from round two of wiffle ball amid allegations of performance enhancers.

Toy Cannon recieves the Juan Pierre Memorial "Making Things Happen" award for his gritty base-scooting. Who is Karim Garcia interfered on just about every fly ball, so there should be an award for that.

Fun times all around...we should definitely do this more often.

35 I'd like to think we can get at least one low level prospect for Juan Pierre. Some random A-Ball player who's just young enough to be intriguing. If we deal JP to the M's, I rather just do a Ichiro for JP/Ethier swap.

From Diamond today...

Loney could get some days off against tough lefties in the future. "Loney's so unpredictable," said Torre, who could choose to sit Loney against either Jeff Francis or Glendon Rusch when the Rockies come to town next week.

What does Torre mean when he calles Loney unpredictable?

2008-08-16 17:51:21
41.   Alex41592

40 - I haven't looked at his splits myself, but the other night Vin was going on and on about how WGJ was hitting in the .290-.300 range in most situations, left-right home-away, etc.

43.   Alex41592
40 - Playing Berroa over Loney is just wrong on so many levels. If we had a shortstop who was better offensively I could get behind it with 'tough' lefties. But, Berroa over Loney, no thanks.

Vin's right about just about everything but lefty/right where BA is .260/.310 and OPS is .687/.847. You could say that he consistently hits righties better than lefties. As noted in 43 , if the option is Berroa, no thanks.

There's a Berroa over Loney argument? In what planet?

I think this is more planting the seeds for if and when Furcal comes back and suddenly Nomar is a bench player. So Nomar can start at first against lefites while Furcal starts at SS, and Loney becomes the best bench player this side of Mark Sweeney.

## Also, Torre says that even if Rafael Furcal comes back, he probably can't be counted on as an everyday player after missing so much time. ##

53 - Planet Torre. Diamond was talking about next week, not when Furcal gets back. If he is just thinking about a way of giving Nomar rest from SS, why does he need to bad mouth WGJ in the process.
2008-08-16 18:35:05
57.   Tripon
One thing about Torre. He doesn't do much of the stuff he says he's going to do. However, he might be saying this to let him play Ethier when a lefty starts and sit both Loney and JP. Or play JP and Berroa in the same lineup.

So basically our options against lefties is:

JP leading off, and Loney batting 8th with Berroa and Ethier benched.

JP leading off, and Berroa batting 8th with Ethier and Loney benched.

Ethier in the 2nd or 7th spot, and Berroa in the 8th spot, with JP and Loney benched.

Of course, this assumes that both Ethier and Loney both won't start at the same time against lefties despite giving us the best offensive and defensive support for the game. Which would you pick?

He's been so much better at turning on pitches. He still has a little trouble getting around on fastballs (takes most of those to center and right) but he is really spinning on the off speed stuff. So much better than earlier in the year. He has been spectacular these last few months and nobody is happier than me (maybe Matt himself...maybe).

I've got some announcers who are hilarious. At first I couldnt tell if they were D's or Phillies. But they sure were'nt Vin. First they said Pierre getting a rare day off against a R_L? hander. Then they said and with all their outfielders here is Ethier because Torre can afford to keep everyone sharp. Then they went into how the D's couldn't score runs in the first half but now they could since Manny arrived. They made no association that maybe playing Kemp and Ethier led to runs as Ethier was hitting a two run homer. And as they keep talking it continues to be even funnier.

Even I can see that Loney has the ability to master the outside pitch approach and then turn on the inside pitch.

Same for Bison.

It's easy to turn on the inside fastball.

It takes real talent to hit the outside ball for power consistently.

I love Matt Kemp, but is anyone else concerned about his platoon splits? In 2008,

Kemp's OPS vs LHP = 1.048
Kemp's OPS vs RHP = .731

ML RHB OPS vs LHP = .776
ML RHB OPS vs RHP = .719

So Kemp's OPS is 43% better against LHP, while the ML righties are only OPSing 8% higher against LHP. He's basically average against RHP but makes his living off lefties. In his career, Kemp's split is .951 / .776.

Related to 104 , maybe his reaction time is slow but he's able to catch up better to lefties? It would be interesting to see hit charts by platoon split. Anybody know where those can be found? Maybe he pulls more vs LHP...

That pitch wasnt a curveball. Anyways, when you get an offspeed pitch middle in, you better turn on it. Thats what happened in his 1st AB. Basically, if you try to pull a breaking ball on the outer half thats what will happen. If the breaking ball is middle in, pulling the ball is easiest for the hitter (its really tough to go inside out on a pitch you have to wait on)

I was the one talking last night about Kemp not pulling the ball. I was referring to fly balls specifically. I didn't see his double tonight, but someone mentioned it hitting the tarp, which sounds like it was a ground ball.

I'm not concerned so much as perplexed. I think he would be a better hitter if he pulled the ball in the air at the appropriate times, and this year he hasn't. Can someone with access to the Bill James site verify these thoughts?

I'd pay $100 to slap Joe Torre right now. He doesn't double switch last night and his closer has to bat and run the bases. Tonight he does double switch with Kuo and Berroa but then hits for Berroa and doesn't bring Kuo back for the 9th. What was the point of the double switch? A half inning of Berroa's defense? Then you have to bring in Ozuna in the 9th so there's nobody to run or play defense for Kent. And he has to hit for Park so there's nobody left on the bench.

He should've been standing on 2nd base, waiting to see what Cameron did, then either break to third or back to first depending on the result. If he was standing on 2nd like he should've been, he probably could've scored given the carrom the ball took away from Cameron. At the very least (conservatively) he is on 3rd. I am not sure if he scores on Kent's fly ball or not. Oh well.

Ughh....this was the toughest game of the year to lose. We missed so many extra-base hits by inches, and Bison overthought on that fly ball by Andre...should have been on 3B there, and would have scored on Kent's liner.

396 No, it's really stupid. Even if he thought the ball was going to be caught there's no reason for him to be standing at first when it is. If he were half way, where he should've been, he ends up on third and the game is tied. And if it were caught he can still get back.

Kemp did the wrong thing. The Brewers announcers were right.

I fear some media backlash for Kemp. Kemp's 'mental' mistakes and such. Kemp did the right thing but he should have been on third.

412. Half way is no good either. You still can't tag up if you go half way. You can still make it back to first if you are standing on 2nd base. The right play is to be standing on 2nd base. With Kemp's speed and the distance of Cameron's throw, Kemp could've easily made it back to first.

412 Isn't getting the tying run into scoring position by tagging up a good reason if he thought the ball would be caught?

Kemp listening to Duncan's intructions on that play?

I think Kemp should have gone to third while the ball was in the air, and the scored when Cameron couldn't catch it.

Because nobody's said that one, yet.

Actually, in that situation, he should be standing on 2B in case the ball goes off the wall or off the CF's glove. That way, at minimum, he makes it to 3B with less than two out. Bison was actually going back to tag up on that play.

416. Nope, because he could always steal 2nd. Not a gaurantee, but he would most likely make it. He should've scored.

If Ethier's ball is caught Kemp tags, goes to second and moves himself into scoring position with Kent coming up. I know why he did what he did but with the way that ball came back off the wall he should've been at third.

If he had been standing on 2B or even just rounding it on that play, he might even score, and Andre might have made it to 3B for a triple.

I don't see a clear 'right' answer here. I see a loss, but it sure does take a lot to beat this team. Tough one to take.

That's Cameron in CF, not JP. You gotta figure that if he doesn't get it, it is because its over the wall. Bad Brewer defense beats us in the end!

Yes, tough one to take. We win the game if that nimrod sitting in the first row next to the bullpen decides to man up and try to catch Martin's drive. It was his seat where the ball was headed, and he didn't even stand up! The least he could have done was move forward and block Kapler from catching it.

I'm not trying to defend Kemp. But I thought the ball was caught or gone. So did Bowa. So did Cameron. I think tagging was right, although it's frustrating.

I believe we are now 17 wins and 18 losses in one run games. The Brewers are something like 22 wins and 13 losses in one run games. Over the course of the last week, since SF last weekend, we have won two games back to back in spectacular walk off fashion, and lost four games horrifically. The Ludwick game, the two in SF, and tonight are games you must win. They are games you do not get back and indicate why the Dodgers are roughly, again, a .500 team.

What is most glaring at this point in the pennant run, is the inability of the bullpen to nail it down. The loss of Saito has created a domino effect and I don't see how they salvage the season with the pen they have. The only veteran is Park. I don't count Johnson as a Major League veteran. What do you do? If Penny can pitch at all, you might be able to use him in relief. But who else?

The Dodgers have a good enough lineup to stay in games until the end, but the bullpen may very well end the hopes and aspirations of this team. Is it fixable at this point? And how do you fix it? Anyone? The numbers are less important than the nad, as it were.
