Comedian Fantasy Draft - Step 2
2006-07-01 09:36
by Jon Weisman

An Experiment, Continued

In this thread, please indicate your interest in drafting a team in the Comedian Fantasy Draft - 1975.

In the draft, you will be choosing from the talent pool (once it is finalized) of anyone who ever generated a quality on-camera laugh by 1975 (who was still alive in 1975).

You will be drafting based on laughter records through December 31, 1975 to build your best roster for a future beginning January 1, 1976. All participants must shelve any knowledge of performance following December 31, 1975 for this event.

No claims at this time. Any premature claims will constitute tampering and will be sanctioned.

Is this a pay league?!?!

I don't know what I am getting into, but count me in.

Paragraph 3 sentence 2 will of course be impossible.

The concept is difficult. Charlie Chaplin had a pretty hefty record of prior laughs, but I suppose you could figure that he was well past his prime. The SNL guys were still pretty unknown, right? That show debuted in the fall of '75?

I wonder who would be the top pick today, with an eye toward value the next few years? Will Farrell? Dave Chappelle? Chris Rock? Vince Vaughn? Steve Carrell? Steve Colbert?

I'm not going to participate in the other draft, by the way. I'm too unfamiliar with too many of those names.

5 - I would definitely put Sandler, or even Chris Walken, way ahead of most of that list.

But being born in 1984 I'll just stay quiet once I ask "Wasn't Andy Kaufman already getting some quality playing time by the end of 1975?"

Sandler or Walken ahead of Will Farrell, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Vince Vaughn, Steve Carrell and Steve Colbert? Maybe if Adam Sandler still had Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison to come, but his recent work is pretty bad. Meanwhile all of those other guys, maybe with the exception of Chris Rock and Will Ferrell are peaking.

7 - Kaufman was a guest on the very first SNL in '75, so yeah.

I wouldn't join any league that would have me as a member. But seriously folks...

I'm in.

This has me intrigued, but just to clarify - when picking one has to pretend s/he has no knowledge of how the comedian did in 1976, but is picking based on knowledge of pre-'75 performances?

'Cuz I wasn't particularly... "aware" in 1975. In fact, I may not have been alive. I'll have to check my sources, though.

11 - You can use any information that was available through the end of 1975. You don't have to have lived it.

I'd love to participate, but I only read this site about once a week or so to research the enemy. How will the draft be conducted?
