Phillies now 1/2 game up on the Dodgers pending outcome of this game and 1 game behind the Padres in the wild card.

Bob ruins TC's good luck streak of first game posts. I hope he's proud of himself.

It's 90s retro night at Petco Park. I was at 80s retro night in June versus the Red Sox, and it was pretty cool to see David Ortiz's picture on the scoreboard photoshopped to make him look like Mr. T. Plus, the Padres had the white, brown and yellow on while the Red Sox had the cool 1986-style plain "BOSTON" across the front of their jerseys.

Khalil Greene looked like Spicoli. I'm unsure if any photo editing software was used.

Proud? I'm beaming! I'm as proud as Andrew will be after Byrnsie homers and then throws out Jeff Kent trying to score while falling over on his follow through.

Don Suttons son just said his favorite team was the '78 Yanks!! WHAT! I just googled Don Sutton & his Dad was pitching for the Dodgers, that's just uncalled for man.

Bob, I never pictured you as the type to use the term "Byrnsie".

Random DBacks fan: "You gotta do it for Short Chris Young, and Upton, and Jackson, and Webb, and Byrnsie....well, not so much Byrnsie."

Does anyone have that March or April list of predictions on how many games the team would win?

Man, I got LATed big time. I composed a big post and was totally "deked".
I've noticed my post's are getting wordier lately, It must be a defense against the D's being in a tight spot.

10 I tallied them at one time, but my hard drive crashed between now and then. If I remember, the average was something like 87 wins. I'll see if I can find the file.

14 if no comes up with a definition of LATed for you, I will try, but I've just begun to perhaps gleen the meaning so I'd rather wait.
By the way deke is a good word I learned watching hockey. I play this word game somewhat like Scrabble and trying to come up with four letter words of this form C_C_
where C is a consonant deke is on of a few that useds two e's. Like cede and very few others.
Fortunately it was there in the Official Scrabble Dictionairy, a wonderfully liberal compendium.

10 I counted 51 total predictions (not counting Eric Enders, who predicted wild card but didn't put a win total). Only two people (Marty and Hythloday) predicted an under .500 record.

The total winning percentage of predictions was .550, an average record of roughly 89-73.

What an inning for the D-backs. Two nothing hits, an HBP and a walk. Doesn't even matter that they only got one run. With all those patient at-bats, they made Penny throw 36 pitches, which increases their chances of seeing Roberto Hernandez in the middle innings.

If only the Dodgers could put together an inning like that once in a while.

Someone today was talking about some of our coaches perhaps leaving. From the average opening of most of our games since the AS break, either most of our pitchers should go, or the pitching coach. Most nights the D's pitchers don't seem ready to pitch in the first two innings.

The question is, did your coach make himself run when his base coaching caused the screw up? That seems to be the case with the Dodgers. It's a combination of bad running decisions and bad coaching.

115 Jon, Penny was wild in the first. Of the 7 batters, four had at least 6-pitch PAs.

One walk, one HBP (on what would have been ball 4), and another 3 ball count. Lots and lots of fastballs.

And a celebratory primal scream to end the inning after two strikeouts!

My other one is that I struck out an 18-year-old shortstop from Vacaville named Jermaine Dye on a changeup in the dirt.

He was batting left-handed (working on switch-hitting), but it still counts.

Sorry to those of you who've already heard my minor claims to fame. I'll stop mentioning it when they retire.

Loney has 3 hits in each of his last 3 games (plus one tonight). The only LA Dodger to ever have a longer streak of 3 hit games is Ted Sizemore, who had five straight in August 1970.

Loney's streak is one of 22 3-gamers in LA Dodger history.

it would be even nicer if he could win the game. That means we have to get to this Davis, and checking game day makes me wonder even more why he appears like more than an average pitcher to the D's .

303 Come on Andrew. It was not that simple. 90 pitches through 4 innings. Very unlikely he would be pitching the 6th. Expanded roster, so no real concern about the BP being used up.

I am not saying any manger would have done it, especially with a guy trying to rack up accounting credits for a Cy Young bid, but if you wanted to win the game more than give penny a chance at some stats, pulling him there was the right move.

But there is a tradgedy here.

Your primary question of the last few days is unanswered. But if Loney and Kemp had 550 abs apiece the season would look very different. How much of a tradgedy this will be is unknown at this point.

354 I did not call him an idiot. I'd agree that would be harsh. I just said it was an emotional mistake.

And I do agree on the BP comment, though with it expanded I think we have some decent options (which do not include Hendrickson). The thing is, Davis was completely shelled that inning. 2 walks, 2 singles and a hard hit LD that was unluckily positioned. Sweeney had a very decent shot there of breaking the game open and letting the bullpen have a small cushion.

Anyway, it worked out. having "worked out" is not my standard for smart decisions, but with 16 games left, I'll take it.

On walking Ethier:
Penny was in the on-deck circle. That was bait set by the Dodgers. Arizona didn't take it, obviously. But even pitching to a pinch-hitter is better than taking your chances with Ethier. Remember, Ethier jumped all over a pitch in his previous at-bat that would have scored 2 if not for a great stab by the 1st baseman.

He has looked so pathetic, so weak, for so long, and tonight he belts a home run, he's lining the ball, he's running faster. Seeing him tonite is like night and day compared to how he's looked for months.

The thought I had was that he felt desperate to be the ballplayer he used to be, like in the first three months of 2006,
and so he started taking some type of performance-enhancing substance the last couple days.

I'm sure my thought is wrong, but that is what came to me watching him tonight.

Also play Abreu and Young. Or imagine what a small market team might give us in pitching for a couple of free position players like Abreu and Young.

Just keep playing Loney, Kemp and Ethier, keep Pierre away from the dark side, keep Penny, Billingsley and Wells pitching well, Saito of course, contributions from Kent and some of the other PVLs from time to time, give LaRoche and Abreu a couple more starts, lose Shea Hillenbrand's luggage with Shea in it... it could be a fun two weeks no matter what the outcome is.

Morning. Did a duel of Mexican pitchers vs. the Snakes never occur during the Fernando or Valdes era? Wow, I forget how young the D-backs franchise is. Maybe 1998.

Looking at video of Kemps triple, he looks stunned that he hit it fair, then remembers to run, and it looks like he still would have beat a throw to third easily. Kemp among the young group really hasn't played much baseball and I get the impression of a young man realizing, "I can do this stuff and I'm good at it too." What a great story.

I had to make 3 hops after starting with a 3 hour train ride to Copenhagen. Then it was Copenhagen to London to Chicago to L.A. I was convinced I was going to be staying the night in Chicago, because at some point they changed my flight to L.A. to one that only gave me 30 minutes to clear customs. But they delayed it an hour, perhaps because it was only 1/3 full. So, I left my hotel in Aarhus at 6:30 a.m. Friday and hit L.A. at 11:45 p.m. Friday.

Interleague schedule: Although the Dodgers' 2008 schedule remains highly subject to change and thus is a tightly guarded secret around Chavez Ravine, the Daily News has learned that the club is tentatively scheduled to host nine interleague games against the Angels, Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox and will play six road games at the Angels and Detroit.

765 Don't taunt the baseball gods like that. You've just increased the probability that Livan throws a shutout against us today.

774 Those are hardly cheap teams. That's nine games against playoff teams, and three more against an AL power (Detroit). Meanwhile, I'll bet the Padres get to pound on the Rangers and Royals, or some other bottom-feeders. I hate interleague play.

Not that I particularly want to play the Yankees, but since 2008 is the final season for Yankee Stadium, it would've been nice if the schedule-makers could've given the Dodgers one last series in the Bronx, just for nostalgia's sake.

From an AP story on Bill Belichick:

But Miami Dolphins quarterback Trent Green was among those doubting the sincerity of Belichick's apology, comparing the coach to the megalomaniacal Marine played by Jack Nicholson in the movie "A Few Good Men."

"Belichick is sitting there, and you know he is getting peeved that he is even in there — the audacity to bring him in and question him," Green said, laughing. "The visual I have is that eventually Belichick kind of snapped and said, 'You're darn right I (did).'"

I'm sure he did, but probably not very often. Clausen's high school team, Oaks Christian High, tended to play pretty low-level opponents and usually won games by 40-50 points.

When Clausen made his first official recruiting trip to Notre Dame, he and teammate Marc Tyler (who is at USC), just left at halftime of a game. And that was planned.

Oaks Christian was playing in Fillmore that night, so it's not like they were particularly close to an airport.
