At Halftime
2008-02-17 18:06
by Jon Weisman

At around 8 p.m., which coincidentally figures to be around halftime of tonight's UCLA-USC basketball game if I'm not mistaken, I am scheduled to be a guest of Ken Levine on KABC 790 AM.

It's alternative programming, like the Lingerie Bowl, only completely different.

I love it, can't wait for it thanks for the heads up Jon.

On a brighter note is the D's signing four prospects from Latin America. Thats pretty good odds that we get something good!

It's also cool they inked some paisanos from Mex, woo!

Going back to the Plaschke article.

I have no other source to substantive information about the Dodgers than what gets reported through the media.

The fact that the management communicated their opinions and thoughts to Plaschke shouldn't surprise anyone, how else am I supposed to find out what they think.

Maybe I am not that protective of the youngsters so if they get some bad press, it doesn't bother me because that is what comes from playing in L.A. and starting to make hundreds of thousands to play a game.

Its true that I could see Kent's point of view probably a lot more clearly than someone in his 20's so I admit that bias.

I just hope that there are less and less stories about this and we concentrate to what happens on the field rather than about a trash can by someone's locker.

I thought the trash can incident was initially reported by Dylan Hernandez?

I'll be listening Jon. Does this mean we get to see a pic of you soon in lingerie? If so, I suggest red or black, those are my favorites. Although I can sometimes deal with pink.

I read that Plaschke this morning and I really appreciate Molly's comments, and those of others. I read the thing basically slackjawed that he was so unconcerned about having passed off some management gossip without any interest whatsoever in that gossip's relationship to reality.

I was especially struck by Molly's (differently put) point that this is a thing that Kemp will have to live with for a long time while for the Times and its columnist it was just a traffic-driving story or two last fall. So true, so unfair.

Duke is down 10 to Wake with 1 minute to play. 5 Duke players (4 starters) have fouled out. I have never heard of such a thing at that level.

Jon should be a like typical sports radio person and be completely unreasonable and just shoot his mouth off.

He should prepare a list of bullet pointed slams at various players. And then add a few cracks about the Giants and finally call Roger Clemens the antichrist.

Illinois fans would want to remind you about a regional final they played a few years back against Arizona. I believe six Illini players fouled out in that game.

I don't think a cheap shot at the Giants would be out of order. Their offense will resemble that of an AAA team.

USC has great road jerseys and horrible home jerseys no matter what the color.

The white, gold, and black ones are all terrible. The cardinal ones on the road are very good, probably because they are closer in style to the football uniforms.

And as a UCLA guy, I have to say that USC's football uniforms are really sharp.

There's going to be a ton of movement in the top ten this week, particularly if SC wins tonight.

Quick guess, assuming UCLA wins:

1. Memphis
2. Tennessee
3. Carolina
4. UCLA
5. Kansas
6. Duke
7. Texas
8. Butler
9. Purdue
10. UConn, Georgetown, or Stanford

2008-02-17 19:22:11
26.   Eric Enders
This will come as no surprise, but Oregon's home jerseys yesterday were really weird. Neon yellow with the names stitched on the back in -- get this -- the same neon yellow. You couldn't read the name unless you were like a foot away from the player.

Of course, Memphis and Tennessee would only be ranked 1-2 for a short time since they play each other soon.

I've been secondarily screened six times in the last two days. I'm always going to fly with an expired ID from now on. The only way to end this idiotic tyranny is to make it completely impossible. Rage against the machine! Who will stand with me? Which of you are brave enough to fight?

I am so lucky to be able to watch this game on my television in NYC. I had to go to ESPN Zone in Time Square to watch the Stanford basketball game yesterday. Fox Sports is showing this game nationally though, I think. Yesss!!

Duke having five players foul out tonight tied a school record. They've done it four times before and as recently as 2005.

The NCAA record for most players fouling out is 8 by St. Joe's against Xavier in 1976.

The unnamed school holds the record for most fouls in a game. The unnameds had 50 in a game against Northern Arizona in 1953.

First time long time, Jon...great blog and thanks for your efforts. Long time Dodgers fan living in NJ.
Saw this on mlbtraderumors.com tonight:

Four Teams Considering Trot Nixon
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, four teams watched 33 year-old outfielder Trot Nixon audition in Tucson today: the D'Backs, Blue Jays, Mariners, and Dodgers. Nixon earned $4MM in '07 while hitting .251/.342/.336 for the Tribe in 354 plate appearances. He was pretty much injury-free.

Nixon's calling card had typically been his ability to rake right-handed pitching. He hit .256/.352/.345 against righties in '07, drawing plenty of walks but displaying no power. Rather than a platoon he seems in line for a bench job this year

Why do we need him? we already have a 3 left-handed hitting left fielders in Ethier, Pierre and Young-although he is a switch hitter.
I read a rumor a few weeks back that LA had interest in Blanton, and that if Ethier went in the deal, LA would look to sign Shawn Green. Probably just a rumor, and wasn't sure it was posted here already as I do not read all the comments.
Looking forward to a great year. There will be alot of late nights here watching the 10:00 games.

Is anyone else wondering if Joe Torre is the best manager for a team of burgeoning young stars? I think about Joe Girardi and what he did for the Marlins in 2006, and I wish we'd gotten him. Although I do respect Mr Torre, I'm a little sad Girardi decided to go manage the Yankees. I imagine he was Ned's first choice.
