Not sure how much I will see, basically I will turn the Dodgers when I have no other sports distractions.

Isn't Bob well and truly Mac-ed? His office computer is a PC, but I'm pretty sure he's a Macbook guy. It's one of the twin pillars (along with his Prius) of his moral superiority.

that was a disappointing at bat for Kemp. 0-2 and he runs the count full and then swings at one somewhere around the L on his helmet.

I'm all for swinging away with two strikes, but it should at least be close.

Huh?;.)

The D's seemed to trail often in the first two or three innings last year. Bill James noticed this and related this to JP and an awful Furc. batting twice in the first three innings. But I had a gut feeling our pitching was also involved.

Takashi Saito fun facts:

1)He was originally a position player. He became a pitcher in his second year in college.

2)He led the Central League in strikeouts (206) in 1996.

3)He became a closer after Kazuhiro Sasaki left the BayStars to join the Seattle Mariners in 2000. His record was 7-1 with 27 saves, and a 1.67 ERA in 2001.

4)He threw a 99 mph fastball in June 26, 2007, which is the all-time record in Japanese Major League pitchers.

I don't believe the last one, but there you go.

Yeah, I remembered how surprised you were last year when you were able to pick up the Angels telecast. I didn't want you to miss it in case you still had the same package. Sorry about that. :-) At least the regular season is almost upon us.

err, I should have dug some more, here is another really interesting fact:

5)Even though Saito is a right-handed pitcher, he bats left-handed. As of 2007 he has yet to have an at-bat in a major league game, so officially he is still listed as a right-handed hitter.

4)He threw a 99 mph fastball in June 26, 2007, which is the all-time record in Japanese Major League pitchers.

I don't recall him hitting 99 as a Dodger, he pitched in AZ that day, maybe their gun is just fast.

It'll be a crime if Pierre starts any game this year batting leadoff vs. Furcal.

Is there at DT consensus on interleague play? I know we've talked about it a few times, but I can't seem to remember where everyone came down
2008-03-27 20:32:58

Wow, from whatI could tell, Kuo looks good.

If spring training stats mean anything, Jones is going to have a bad year and Hu a good one. And I have a feeling these are going to hold.

Hu
Ethier

Kemp needs to learn to lay off the high heat
2008-03-27 20:37:57
72.   dzzrtRatt
Ahh, nice of an evening to be in front of a TV with the Dodgers.

69 I agree. I foresee good years from Furcal, Martin, Loney, Ethier, Hu and 4/5 starting pitchers.

Bad years from Jones, Pierre, Kent, Broxton and Beimel.

Unclear: Kemp, LaRoche, Garciaparra

2008-03-27 20:41:22
73.   KG16
72 - If Hu has a great run early, what happens when (if?) Kent/LaRoche/Garciaparra are healthy? Who plays Wally Pipp to Hu's Lou Gerhig?

90%: .307 BA, 11 HR, 60 RBI, .380 OBP, .438 SLG, 108 R, 31 SB, .288 Eqa, 7.6 WARP3

Rafael Furcal's theme song for tonight -
Hang me out to dry by Cold War Kids

Is anybody worried about Loney's Spring batting avg? Martin's avg is actually lower but we have to give him the benefit since he is obviously proven over 2 seasons.

I hope Hu plays into a starting spot next year.

Here is some interesting stuff on Ethier>>Ethier transferred to Chandler-Gilbert Community College after playing with ASU in the fall of 2000. The coaching staff at ASU told him that they thought he did not have Division I talent and that he would do better to play junior college ball. At CGCC.

I don't know about you but I hate it when coaches do that stuff.

Ethier also intends to play for Mexico in the next WBC.

Dodgers offense sucks tonight.
2008-03-27 20:51:57
85.   Gen3Blue
I am worried about Jones. But Hu is really looking much better than I expected. We should just keep him until the end of Furcals contract. And I'm not abandoning Furcal. I believe he had a great season in the Carribean playing second. What could be better.

2008-03-27 20:55:02

I'd like a combo of Hu & Etanislao but Abreu seems to be brittle.

Imagine an up-the-middle that consists of Martin, Hu, Etanislao & A. Jones, Woah.

2008-03-27 21:02:00
93.   Gen3Blue
Yeah, I feel we have to keep Hu around. His defense at SS or 2nd can mean so much to a team. And the way his offense is going, I'm not afraid to boost him to people who care much less about defense than I do. I tell you it is so important up the middle.
2008-03-27 21:04:12
94.   oklahomadodger
91 Let me be clear as well, I meant that I second the opinion of 87 Although if Hu earned the starts and was producing this year then I would be all for it. The game I made it out for last year Hu went deep, the fiance instantly liked him so we've been pulling for him all spring.

Pierre up with man on third 1 out, ummm why not pinch hit for him with Young in that situation?

Hu who has 2 hits in the game is pinch hit for with Young.

I am weary of Joe Torre having a little too much fun and not enough thinking.

Hit and run with Ethier on a 2-1 count?

All right, it's DeWitt's time. Right now.

132.   KG16
hit and run on a 2-1 count makes sense, you're expecting to get a strike there.
2008-03-27 21:33:27
133.   JJ42
129 I think you can just show up and they let you on the field. In the past, they didn't let you throw real baseballs but gave out "soft" balls to play catch with.

Do the the managers play paper-rock scissors if the game stays tied?

Dewitt, please don't walk!

133 - since I'm 30 and dad's a couple decades older, I think we can manage to sneak in a couple of the real ones... but cool, thanks

Dewitt is showing a lot better discipline this spring than he has in the past.

Pierre grandslam, I'm calling it.

I guess this dovetails with Bill James' analysis of Pierre being good to lead off an inning, bad any other time.

150 That is what makes him not a good professional athlete. You need to get mentally ready to perform when the time comes, whatever else is going on with you. And if you fail, you need to get over it real fast.
2008-03-27 21:42:38
153.   Bob Hendley
150 . Yeah, I think that we were all secretly hoping that he would hit it out.

I know he's getting paid to play a game and all, but it's never fun when you stink it up. He would be desperate to prove everyone wrong, and I bet he reads a lot of the criticism of him.

Late with the box, I can see JP went 0 for 5.

Ive watched most ST games and the D's have not caught the breaks. This tends to turn around, and it doesn't distinguish between exhibition and real games.

For those who are concerned about him, D4P is indeed alive and OK -- just the usual difficulties with life getting in the way when you're busy finishing up your PhD. Send him your good wishes because he needs them.

150 I completely agree with that. I just don't like watching someone implode in whatever sphere of life it is. Sport is ruthless, because the 'stakes is high'.

Are we still going to be treated to Torre's Hamlet act after tonight?

If Kershaw is a Minotaur, Pierre is a baby dragon -- a mythical leadoff hitter.

If he really did the things everyone says he's so good at, he might be okay, but he doesn't.

Hey D4P this is bluebleeder, best wishes bro.

162.   Lee Corbett
I referenced myself; I meant I agree with the assessment that Juan is not mentally tough; but you probably worked that out.

If Kershaw gets called up, will he start or relieve? and if the latter, is that conducive of his development as a starter?
