... and I plan another Dodger post late this evening, but in the meantime, feel free to continue to open-chat. For my part, I will have the UCLA-Cal and USC-Stanford basketball games on TV as much as the wife and kids permit.

Also, please check out my plea at Screen Jam to draw more viewers to Friday Night Lights, newly annointed by none other than me as the best one-hour show on network television.

Well, I heard that Michael Roll was a shooter. Nice to see that come true the last couple of games.

Apparently the Drew deal is done, and the Red Sox get an opt-out clause, according to the report at MLB.com.

Haha true. It seems UCLA lives off of reputations.

Aaron Brooks served one game of his suspension in Oregon's opener against Lehigh. The second game was under appeal and I believe the Pac-10 ordered it today.

He had to take one game off automatically because he was kicked out of a game for fighting.

2007-01-25 18:38:00
12.   trainwreck
They said they took him out for his own safety, because it was Appleby that he nailed.

I just read that Brooks intentionally elbowed a Husky player in the face last year, which I guess is why he's sitting out against Washington.
2007-01-25 18:38:50
14.   arnold
Perhaps UCLA can get Kevin Love's uncle to sing the national anthem at each game.
2007-01-25 18:40:39
15.   Bob Timmermann
12
Or you can also argue that Oregon sat down Brooks because they don't think Washington is all that good.
2007-01-25 18:42:39

The plan to sit down Brooks in Seattle was in place before the season.

I usually can't stand when people constantly harp on bad officiating, but this has been a poorly officiated game.
2007-01-25 19:18:11
21.   Bob Timmermann
My pet peeve, from visiting sites like Bruins Nation, is why people are so obsessed with the amount of newspaper coverage their team gets in the LA Times.

It's like a crusade with some people there.

2007-01-25 19:19:41
22.   Greg Brock
21 A lot of people are still in "We need to be validated as an elite team" mode. But I agree. I really don't care about what the news papaers say, and I've never complained about it.

Winning consistently sort of takes care of that stuff.

2007-01-25 19:25:19
23.   Bob Timmermann
Having lived in L.A. all my life, I can state that the times that USC basketball has received more coverage than UCLA basketball in the LA Times are few and far between.

When John Wooden passes away, the LA Times will run a special section. When Bob Boyd passes away, there will be a nice story that might make the front page of Sports.

USC football obviously receives the most ink in the LA Times sports section now but you can't say it's undeserved.

2007-01-25 19:25:31
24.   Greg Brock
It's a shame that Afflalo is probably leaving this year. Afflalo and Love would be a devastating inside-out combo. That team would be pretty great.
2007-01-25 19:28:13
25.   Greg Brock
To be honest, without Jim Murray or Ross Newhan, I really don't read the Times anymore. I stopped getting it, and I rarely read an article online unless somebody links it.

Tim Brown's Sunday baseball was decent, now he's gone. Morning Briefing is still okay. Simers has moments.

2007-01-25 19:34:09
26.   Bob Timmermann
Cal's offense has quieted down since they abandoned the "desperation three point toss at the shot clock buzzer" offense.

That's also known as "Play #1"

2007-01-25 19:35:55
27.   Greg Brock
I'm moving away from the "UCLA starts slowly" camp into the "Everybody's pumped up to play UCLA" camp. Maybe they just get attacked early.

Or maybe they start slowly. I don't know.

2007-01-25 19:37:39
28.   Johnson
Is Kevin Love going to be a one-and-done guy? From the hype I would suspect as much. Seems like UCLA would have a real nice shot at a title with Love next to Afflalo and Mbah A Moute, but there are suggestions that both might bolt after this year. Too bad.
2007-01-25 19:41:27
29.   Greg Brock
Mbah A Moute better learn to shoot the ball before he has delusions of playing SF in the NBA.

Love could stay two years. It's possible. If he wins a title, I give him permission to leave.

2007-01-25 19:59:14
30.   Greg Brock
Alright, now we root for Jon's mighty Cardinal to take care of business against Southern Cal.

I believe in you, Tree People!

2007-01-25 20:08:42
31.   Bob Timmermann
Greg Brock and I agree!

But isn't the Pac-10 better when Stanford is good?

2007-01-25 20:11:32
32.   Bob Timmermann
But will ASU win a conference game this year?

They have road trips to the Oregons and the Bay Area schools. And home games against the LA schools, the Washingtons, and the Wildcats.

2007-01-25 20:12:12
33.   D4P
My ideal Pac-10 would have all 10 teams going undefeated.
2007-01-25 20:12:16

Never content to enjoy the moment, Bob Timmermann must sow the seeds of enmity.

And we don't disagree that often.

Tracy Murray?

Ooh, unintentionally funny guess there.

I can't think of Tracy Murray coming up big in the assist or rebound categories.

2007-01-25 21:32:48
56.   Andrew Shimmin
I found the real answer. I would contend that it's much funnier.

I don't remember much about Murray (obviously), except that he was awesome.

Is it a good sign or a bad sign that Hank Luisetti is still in the top 20 alltime in scoring for Stanford?
2007-01-25 21:35:11
58.   Jon Weisman
Good sign. Hank is revered. He needs to be remembered.

56 If it's who I think it is, what makes it funny?
2007-01-25 21:36:36
60.   Bob Timmermann
Hank Luisetti still holds the Stanford records for most points in a game (50). He did that back in the 1937/38 season.
2007-01-25 21:37:56
61.   Jon Weisman
60 - What is that in 2007 points?

Triple double! Now why haven't we put this game away???

2007-01-25 21:38:27
62.   Andrew Shimmin
59- Wasn't he particularly hated? He was run out of town on a rail. It's a little funny that he should be the last triple-doubler; or maybe not, I don't know.
2007-01-25 21:38:36
63.   Bob Timmermann
59
Jelani McCoy is the UCLA player with the triple double. He is the alltime leader in blocked shots, although the stat wasn't compiled in the days of Alcindor or Walton.

I would have thought that #33 would have racked up a few blocked shots in his day.

2007-01-25 21:39:53
64.   Bob Timmermann
Jelani McCoy was run out of UCLA on a roach clip, not a rail.
2007-01-25 21:41:28
65.   Greg Brock
Ooooh, I totally forgot about McCoy's triple double. I was thinking of Toby Bailey's triple double.

Jelani McCoy...yeeeeaaaaahhhhhhh.

2007-01-25 21:44:03
66.   Andrew Shimmin
McCoy signed, last week, to play with Viola Reggio Calabria, this year. I wonder if he ever learned to shoot.
2007-01-25 21:44:06

Actually Toby Bailey's was nine days after McCoy's. I had the order reversed.

What's the Pac-10 record for a player blocking shots?
2007-01-25 21:47:21

Tobey Bailey is one of my favorite Bruins. That title game (sniff).
2007-01-25 21:47:50

Ned Colletti...won't be afraid to pull the trigger approaching the July 31 trade deadline if the Dodgers need to bolster their roster for the push to the playoffs. Atlanta's Andruw Jones could be available. Or Minnesota's Torii Hunter.

http://tinyurl.com/yojayp

2007-01-25 21:52:24
76.   Andrew Shimmin
I always felt bad for him, going out of his way to have a name like Tobey, and it wasn't enough to be even a top three name on that team. The O'Bannon brothers? Tyus Edney? That's just bad luck.
2007-01-25 21:52:55
77.   Bob Timmermann
The Pac-10 has tracked triple-doubles since 1985 and I have info through the 2004/05 season.

Andre Iguodola (3)
Loren Woods (2)
Luke Jackson (2)
Kevin Johnson
Gary Payton
