Loney's Magic 8-Ball
2007-03-01 17:56
by Jon Weisman

Baseball America asks what James Loney's future looks like: John Olerud or Travis Lee?

I will be ... optimistic!

The question comes out of the publication's 2007 Top 100 Prospects List, which places Dodgers Andy La Roche at 19, Clayton Kershaw at 24, Scott Elbert at 31 and Loney at 44.

The Rockies led all of baseball with eight players on the list. Arizona has six. Of course, the Dodgers get hurt because of how many players graduated from prospect status last year, such as Jonathan Broxton, Matt Kemp, Russell Martin and Chad Billingsley.

Again for those of wondering about why Kemp, among others, isn't listed, here is Baseball America's limits on MLB ABs or IP to be considered a prospect:

All players who haven't exceeded the major league rookie standards of 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched (without regard to service time) are eligible.

Matt Kemp had 150 ABs last year for the Dodgers, Chad Billingsley pitched 90 IP while in LA.

No Pac 10 hoops in CT.

Rob Schneider is in some film appearing as a devotee licking a pretty woman's prosthetic leg.

And North Carolina basketball.

And St. Louis Blues hockey, which is the likely winner.

"Hello, my name is Jon Weisman and I am an American Idololic."

This is proof of the devastating addictive power Idol. If you watch it just once you will become so hooked you will sell your worldly possessions to pirate Direct TV signals so you can get the East Coast feed three hours earlier.

If it can seduce someone as intellectual and discriminating as Mr. Weisman what chance do the rest of have. Don't do it Sam. One viewing and you will find yourself turned out on a street corner begging for money to buy Clay Akin downloads.

I've seen the first "Deuce Bigalow" film and know the scene about the prosthetic leg.

You cannot routinely rule out watching Adam Sandler film because then you would miss "Punch-Drunk Love" which is an excellent movie, although you do run the risk of having the person you are watching it with say "Why did you make sit through that?" or, alternatively, about 10 minutes in, "Please turn it off."

Steve Dilbeck of the Daily News on the pull of spring training. Well done, IMO==

http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_5319506

Excerpt:

"We grow up, file away all the kids who never delivered, all the stars who got old, all the weaknesses that weren't overcome.

"And you're certain you're past all that. Too many disappointments, too many false hopes and false starts. Too much distance from childhood.

"Where there were wide eyes, crow's feet stake a claim. Where there were baseball cards, tax forms invade. Where there was certainty, doubt takes hold.

"So it is unexpected when it reaches out to you after so many years, after so many springs."

Apparently, according to IMDB, I've never seen a Paul Newman movie. I have, however, seen some Adam Sandler movies (and while Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were entertaining, they're not really at the top of my favorite movies list). I thought Road to Perdition was Tom Hanks best performance (except for perhaps Philadelphia). I really liked that movie but it got almost no play when it came out. (First movie I ever saw at the Arclight--nice theater).

D4P, you can't go wrong with any of the movies listed in 25 except the Color of Money (not as good as the others and vile Tom Cruise is in it.) I especially recommend the Sting and Butch Cassidy--both classics.

Another good Paul Newman movie was The Verdict. As an attorney, you don't have to look very far to see that kind of burnout.

BTW, I have tried a number of Paul Newman food products and I think most of them are fair at best. In addition, if you read the nutrition lables they are generally no better than anything else. For example, their sandwich cookies are no better tha Oreos and their popcorn has tons of fat and salt.

88.   D4P
ESPN Page 2's "The Most Mediocre Team Money Can Buy":

First base: Nomar Garciaparra, Dodgers (2 years, $18.5 million)

Why this was a bad contract: This is a great test to see if your GM read "Moneyball" or "The Winner Within." Do you sign the creaky comeback veteran (who still missed 40 games in his "injury-free" season) or play the rookie (James Loney) who tore it up in the bigs after hitting .380 in Triple-A? The difference in your decision: about $9 million per season.

Why this signing may work out: Tie games will be decided by penalty kicks starting in 2008.

Center field: Juan Pierre, Dodgers (5 years, $44 million)

Why this is a bad contract: Pierre's ranking the last four years in outs made among NL hitters: 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 1st.

Why this signing may work out: Pierre regains his 2004 form. (Hey, always pay for the highest potential a player may produce at, just in case he actually does!)

Drew and Lugo also made the list.

1) UCLA
2) Washington State
3) USC
4) Oregon
5) Arizona
6) Stanford

If USC, Oregon, and Arizona all finish tied for third at 11-7, USC would be #3, Oregon would be #4, and Arizona #5.

If USC, Oregon, and Stanford all finish tied for third at 11-7, USC would be #3, Oregon would be #4, and Stanford #5.

So this means USC is locked into the #3 spot win or lose Saturday. Oregon will be #4 if they beat Oregon State.

The difference between being #4 and #5 is pretty much meaningless.

come to arizona miltie. today was cold, in the 50s :(
lol. It was in the mid to low 40's at my school and it rained all day. I really liked UofA, but there's a few reasons why I liked Oregon better.
1. The campus is smaller and easier to get around.
2. I'm a runner and Arizona is hot! I was running at my school in August when it was 95 degrees and felt like I was going to die. I'm pretty sure that would become a reality in Arizona.
3. While I'd feel extremely comfortable at Arizona since the people are similar to those in Southern California, I am also looking for a change. The people in Oregon are different (not in a bad way). I want to experience something new. I have a friend at UofA and a few people from my high school go there. They all love it in Tucson. I don't know anyone at Oregon.
4. I did not really like Tucson, while I loved Eugene. Eugene is a great college town with lots to do. Unfortunately, I won't be able to longboard much in Oregon. The deciding factor came down to Eugene having 3 Walmarts!

One of my friends wants me to go to San Diego State, but I don't think I'd ever graduate there. That's the reason why I didn't go there in the first place. If I had applied to out of state colleges out of high school, I probably would have ended up at Arizona.

>>> Wolf is the choice for No. 2 spot in Dodgers rotation

By Steve Henson, Times Staff Writer

Discussions over whether Jason Schmidt or Brad Penny is more deserving to occupy the No. 2 spot in the starting rotation behind Derek Lowe can cease, as least temporarily.

2007-03-02 01:08:33
170.   berkowit28
169 It was quite possibly done to give Schmidt the home opener on April 9. (There's a day off so no 5th pitcher is needed in the first rotation.) It also inserts a LHP (Wolf) between two RHPs in the rotation - keep the opposing teams on their toes. There will be lots of opportunities to readjust the rotation if necessary.

Just maybe Betemit will force Nomar to wear a third baseman's glove and Loney can begin his string of 12+ years starting at first in 2007.

Maybe it is Betemit instead of La Roche that should be taking fly balls in the outfield this spring.
