Brazoban Disabled, Hull Recalled
2007-06-01 13:53
by Jon Weisman

Yhency Brazoban has gone back to the disabled list, and Eric Hull is the surprise callup to replace him, reports Tony Jackson of the Daily News.

Hull has a 3.67 ERA in 27 1/3 innings with AAA Las Vegas this year, striking out 27 and allowing only one home run but allowing 24 hits and 15 walks.

Hull had similar numbers in 73 innings with the 51s last season (78 strikeouts, 97 baserunners, six homers allowed.)

Update: Steve Yeager talked to The Associated Press about the second life-threatening accident in his life.

Now a coach for the Single-A Inland Empire 66ers of the California League, Yeager was on a freeway headed home following a night game May 4 when another vehicle hit the center divider, went airborne and came down on top of his car.

"Bam. That's it. It happened so fast," Yeager said. "I saw the car coming, tried to swerve to my right. It was too late. I swerved enough so it didn't land directly on top of me, just partially on top on the driver's side.

"It sent me spinning -- I ended up on the side of the road."

Yeager said when his car finally came to rest, he saw blood -- lots of blood -- coming from his left arm. And he felt the kind of pain that can't be measured.

"How do you describe pain? I started moving my fingers to make sure everything was still attached, and figured, 'We'll go from there,"' he said.

Hmm. Can't say I agree with that move, but at least it's different. I take it Hull's using Wilson Valdez's former spot on the 40-man roster? Or did Abreu already use that?

Reposting this since I got LATed in the last thread:

I no longer live in NY, but I think there's a lot of truth to 109 and 110. Even the serious baseball fans out there really don't know the Dodger players (or other west coast players). It's like the East Coast is on a two-year time delay. It took a couple of years before they knew who LoDuca was, and realized he was good. Maybe it's the same with Martin.

That would also explain why Nomar is one of the only Dodgers doing well in the voting, even though he, well, stinks.

One would think the East Coast effect would be mitigated a little by the Japanese voting. From what I understand, a not-insignificant portion of the online ballots come from Japan. The Dodgers not only opened the door for the influx of Japanese players, but have had at least one Japanese star on the team almost continuously since 1995 -- and then there's the proximity factor. All that would ostensibly work in the D's favor. But it doesn't appear to be happening.

I think this means that La Roche is headed for AAA for Kuo tomorrow since they didn't use Yhancy's DL move to bring him up. Or they are just going to let Penny pitch.

Hull? Wow, I wouldn't have guessed that one. He's only up for a little while and has been decent I guess so, whatever. Obviously this isn't the last move we'll get in the next few days. I guess Houlton wasn't someone they'd want to use for short appearances then?

Re: the all-star voting topic in last thread, there are probably multiple reasons why LA players don't get the votes at the level NY players do. More people there care enough to vote; there are more NY "stars"; they're less prone to vote for players from other teams; it's the most populous region in the country (though LA is second); the Dodgers players aren't seen as much on the East Coast (previously mentioned); and so on. I'll buy many of those reasons, but mostly I think LA fans just care less about the all-star game than some other places do.

Is there absolutely no chance that Billingsley starts tomorrow? Tony Jackson points out he wasn't used in yesterday's game; Little may have been anticipating getting multiple innings out of Bills on Saturday, but could those innings come as a starter? From the last thread, regarding power outage: my previous numbers were comparing this season so far to the entire season last year. Here's a longer trend, comparing the first two months of each season:

2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007
R/PA 0.135 0.122 0.113 0.119 0.118 0.117 0.124 0.115
HR/PA 0.033 0.030 0.024 0.026 0.028 0.026 0.028 0.023
SLG% 0.447 0.424 0.400 0.414 0.419 0.413 0.423 0.402

(I also changed the ratios to be per Plate Appearance.)

JPG format graph here:
http://tinyurl.com/2zansh

Simplistic conclusion: power and scoring in the first two months are about the same as 2002 and at the lowest point in the 2000s.

Assuming the Dodgers wanted another middle reliever to replace Brazoban, Hull made the most sense out of anyone on the 40 man.

"Hull made the most sense out of anyone on the 40 man."

Meloan probably would've made the most sense out of anyone in the organization, though. He's not on the 40-man but we currently have 2 spots to play around with (the 40 spots are full but Repko and Anderson could be moved from the 15 to 60-day DL).

The fact that they picked Hull over Meloan leads me to believe that this is a very short-term callup that will end whenever Tsao gets better.

From what I understand about Japanese viewing habits of MLB, they're pretty targeted. First, it was Nomo and only Nomo. Then Ichiro. Then Hideki Matsui. And now Matsuzaka. Every Dodger, then Mariner, then Yankee, now Yankee game and Daisuke start televised. I wonder if (and doubt that) Saito gets the same following, especially since you can't predict when he'll appear. Is Jeff in Tokyo still out there? Any MLB on the terebi other than Yanks, Sox, and maybe Mariners these days?

61 I suspect that Arizona will make a serious run this summer. If they catch a little bit of luck with the development of their young players, I think they have more than enough talent to beat the Dodgers for the division title. They've assembled some smart leadership in the front office and have been making good decisions since the new management went into place. I wouldn't be surprised if they become the leading franchise in the division over the next 5 years.

Not to beat the dead horse into glue, but Joe Torre now saying ARod shouldn't have yelled. "It was probably inappropriate to do it at the time he did it, but you can't change it, unfortunately."

Oh, Rick Monday. I love it when he's telling a long boring story and then, remembering there's a ball game, says: "The first pitch is a ball outside, and the pitcher comes right back with a strike, one-and-one." The image (intended?) is of a pitcher throwing a pitch, then, keeping his foot on the rubber, firing another pitch as soon as he gets the ball back from the catcher.

I'm not just reacting to Saenz's last at bat, it has been in my mind all season that he is finished. Sure he has had a few hits this year but he has looked terrible in a lot of them. There comes a time in every player's life to hang them up and for him that time is now. There are quite a few players in the organization who would be more productive in that spot than he now is. I like Olmedo but there is no room for that on 25 man rosters. I wonder if he would be any good as a hitting coach?

108 Rick Monday had an incredibly infuriating moment a couple days ago. With Gonzalez on second Russell Martin "RIPS A GROUNDBALL TO THE RIGHT SIDE! And Russell Martin does his job. You just love to see hitting like that (etc. etc.). Lopez's only play is to first, and Martin advances the runner."

While we've gone over Steiner getting excited over warning track fly balls, I think Monday going crazy for a productive out is much worse.

117 I've been quietly thinking that so far this season, too, that Saenz at least looks more tired as a hitter this season. Not ready to give up on him just yet but I do think his time is almost up. And yeah, I think he'd make a swell hitting coach (for what that's worth).

Abreu looked like he might have been just barely safe anyway, had Paulino not lost the ball there but could have been called out - was really close. He did a nice job of tucking his hand in there around the catcher.

117 Little production from either of them. But Saenz will get maybe 50 ABs over the course of the season; it looks now like he might get 12-15 hits. What would Looney or Kemp produce in the same ABs? They would learn from it and be better next year, and provide better defense even now. With 3 runs in the top of the inning, things are getting better all the time.

Still, Wolf will continue to need a little help from his friends.

And if Furcal or Pierre make it to third again, perhaps we'll soon be saying, "He's stealing home (bye bye)."

275 -- I don't know what has been wrong with LaRoche this year, but he performed a lot better in Vegas last year than he was performing in the same place this year. It could be that he needs time to make more progress in recovering from shoulder surgery, getting back full strength. Abreu was doing very well in Vegas when we called him up, and I think he can productively fill a stopgap role as a 3B in the majors, with at least a good average if not ideal 3B power. Long term for Abreu, I see him hitting much like Ray Durham while playing infinitely superior 2B defense.

The only thing I can say in defense of pulling Billingsley is that they fear they may need him tomorrow, especially of Kuo's starting. Greg Pellam softball update: Last night I went 3-4 with a double and two singles. The out was another weak popup to the pitcher.

We lost 13-7, having scored 7 runs in the 1st inning.

The umpire was on my case after I asked him if he was in a hurry after he made a horrible call, calling out our leadoff hitter on strikes. He made derogatory comments about my weight and refused to call any runner out at 1B while I was playing there.

Anybody who thinks that Grady protects players' streaks should check what he did tonight. That's about as tough a save as you can get. Coming in in the 8th with a runner in scoring position. But Saito says "no problem!" (in Japanese of course).

That was a save in the tradition of the late, great Clem Labine: coming in with the tying run in scoring position, getting out of the inning unscathed, and then mowing down the opposition in the 9th inning. In those days, there was no particular name for saves, however.
Saito is something special.

410 I have a '98 Camry and the engine leaks like a sivv. Oil, transmission fluid, the whole nine. So every time I have to drive anywhere further more than three or four hours away I change all my fluids out of sheer paranoia. Gets a tad expensive.
