Martin Returns to Third Base
2008-04-25 22:57
by Jon Weisman

Nomar Garciaparra suffers a strained abdomen in the ninth inning, and with Blake DeWitt now in the minors and Chin-Lung Hu already in the game at second base, Russell Martin returns to play third base, his original professional position.

Martin played 40 games at third base for the Gulf Coast League Dodgers in 2002, then had one more game in 2003 in A ball as he converted to catcher.

On the first pitch with Martin at third base, Gary Bennett didn't get under Takashi Saito's pitch, allowing it past him for a game-tying passed ball.

Earlier in the game, Andruw Jones left the game with a contusion after fouling a ball off himself. If this game were to go enough, people might see Fernando Valenzuela back in the outfield.

Update: After tying a Los Angeles Dodger record by reaching base in his first six plate appearances, Martin wins it in the 13th with a sacrifice fly.

Walking the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the 9th in a tie game is bad. Walking Juan Pierre in that situation should be an automatic demotion to A ball.

... I remember Fernando playing 1B in the 20-some-inning game at Houston in 1989. The winning hit was just over his outstretched glove.

Eddie Murray was playing third and Jeff Hamilton was pitching. And Hamilton pitched pretty well; struck out Ken Caminiti as I recall.

Early today on Diamond Leung's blog, he mentioned Sweeney may start at 1B for a game soon:

"Mark Sweeney is off to a slow start, as he only has one pinch hit in 14 at-bats. So Torre said he and bench coach Bob Schaefer would speak to him about getting him a start sometime likely at first base to give James Loney his first day off"

It may just be my imagination but it appeared to me from his first AB tonight that Matt Kemp has shorten his swing. It allowed him to wait a split second longer before committing. He appeared to be an entirely different hitter than the one I watched last night. If that observation is correct it'll be interesting to see if it continues against the two lefties this weekend.

I had a bit of a surreal viewing of a surreal game. I left for a club with the Dodgers up a couple of runs (5-3, maybe?). So, I'm at the club and trying to have a good time, but it's mostly dead and the bands that were playing weren't really on their A-games. Then I notice the game is on the one tv in the joint.

And all the sudden I see Martin going into the dugout, and I'm thinking, "Did they boot Martin?" Only to see him playing third. Eventually, there's a group of about 10 people around the tv watching the extra innings (mind you, live band in one room, dj in another). I get talking to a girl who seems to know quite about about the Dodgers (she had the important stats down, ages and marital status). When she mentions that she's got season tickets, I can only ask if she's single. Then she says, "Pierre's a bum." And my only response is, "I'd marry you right now."

She and her two friends left to go see the band and missed the end of the game... I couldn't find them later to tell them what happened.

So I get home (just as the post game show is ending) and I notice that this thread which has headline about Martin playing 3B already had over 400 comments from sometime in the 9th inning through the end of the game.

The good:
1. A very interesting discussion with Greg Brock about the run of presidents between Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln. I'll just say two words, James Polk.
2. I got another Torre bobblehead because someone left without it.
3. Russell Martin's last at bat, nice fly ball to right, Hawpe had to field flat footed so that gave the Bison all the time he needed to score.

The Bad:
1. Inability to shut the door with 2 outs for Kuroda.
2. Nomar's range or lack thereof.
3. Andruw not taking himself when he first got hurt.

The weird and wacky:
1. Note to Todd Helton, you are not stealing 3B, why were you picked off.
2. Park and Bennett played big roles tonight.
3. Saito has not been able to smile recently.

2008-04-26 01:49:15
406.   Eric Enders
Although all is happy in our fair city tonight, I wanted to mention something that's been gnawing at me for a while... why does everybody rag on Matt Kemp's baserunning when it's actually James Loney who's the far worse baserunner? You can throw out all those caught stealings -- I assume they were busted hit-and-runs -- but then you have plays like the one where he was picked off even though he wasn't going anywhere, and then the one tonight. That was a horrible baserunning play to get thrown out at home even after Helton had already tagged first base for one out. It cost us at least a run and helped eventually send the game into extra innings.

I'm a huge Loney fan; I just find it curious that one kid gets harped on endlessly for his baserunning while another one who's even worse gets a continual free pass.

2008-04-26 01:52:40
407.   Eric Enders
Also, and if this makes me a bad person so be it, but I can't help but be relieved that we'll be Nomar-free for a while. It'll be nice to have a guy at third base who can actually catch the ball and throw guys out. (I hope that guy will be LaRoche, but I'll take DeWitt too.)

One could argue that none of Colorado's first four runs would have scored tonight if we'd had a real third baseman playing third.

406 I agree, I thought the tagging up to go to second was a bad play too. But I guess the only thing I could say is that Kemp does make some spectacular miscues at that times and I think you just end paying more attention to him so his mistakes are magnified.

After his slow start, Martin all of a sudden now boasts a .411 OBP for the season.

Loney may have been going on down contact that play, and wouldn't have had much of a chance to reverse.

DT has a rich tradition of tolerating splitters. Das411 is a Phillies fan. Sam DC is raising his children to root for the Nats.

And I allow my boy to root for Barry Bonds, without giving him any hint of the controversy that surrounds him.

Not all of us can stay up late. I was up at 6am yesterday, so I went to bed in the 7th, with the Dodgers leading by two, and runners on 2nd and 3rd. It's still fun, though, to read through the play-by-play, and the comments here, to see how things transpired. I didn't even check the Times to see what happened to Nomar -- I knew it would be 'covered' here.

Here's to Dodger Thoughts!
