by Jon Weisman
Come on!
Clayton Kershaw pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball in front of Ned Colletti on Friday.
Larry Harnisch's Daily Mirror blog at the Times displays a page from the January 18, 1958 sports section that announced the Coliseum as the Dodgers' first official Los Angeles home.
Hey, look - Walt Torrence just made a basket with 35 seconds left to lift John Wooden's Bruins over USC. Denny Crum led UCLA with 17 points. And Santa Anita has suspended Valenzuela, and Stanford has a new football coach!
Blue Heaven, which has lots of fun stuff on it regularly, passes along a video of Roy Campanella on What's My Line?
"I know quite a few Japanese players." - Steve Allen.
The competition: Andruw Jones' hits vs. Chase Utley's homers. Jones leads, 15-12.

Big Game record: 2-3
Overall winning percentage: .280, 2nd worst in Stanford history.
The Curtice family sent a bottle of champagne to Walt Harris.
your in Colorado BH?
What! It says so right in the article!
I think it's cool also to watch Martin (the athlete) show of his abilities at a different position's but he's an ALL-STAR catcher playing out of position what IF he gets hurt? I know I wouldn't be to pleased.
Final score:
Stanford 21
UCLA 19
C'mon down. You have 35 minutes of some information you can pick up.
Shut up, kid!
This looks like a short term move until La Roche is ready, but it improves the flexiblity of the team long term knowing Russ can do this. My main complaint would be that we're essenially trading Dewitt for Bennett in the lineup.
Andruw Jones makes roughly $50,000 a day.
They don't call it the hot corner for nothing Imperabo.
And this was something that was done early in their careers.
I'll be watching how LaRoche does in the next few weeks, if his power picks up and Dewitt should struggle, I think a move could be made.
It was a mean lucky shot...
Martin would lose a ton of value if he was a 20 home run hitting mediocre third baseman.
Seriously, it's sad.
It's not like the children are our future or anything.
Whitney Houston says otherwise.
Who listens to crackheads?
Now will I have paper in my class or printer cartridges? Who knows. We are the brokest of the broke.
Actually baseball players only get paid while the regular season is going on, which is about 180 days.
Although I am not sure if you think Andruw Jones should feel some sense of shame for getting paid a very large salary.
If a crackhead falls in an alley and no one's there to...
I tend to feel that Loaiza has been very lucky thus far. It's gotta be only a matter of time before he starts getting rocked consistently.
The Dodgers go 149-13, because Torre brilliantly moved Martin to 3B.
I remember a drama teacher I was working with and some of the students were making fun of Whitney. The guy in all seriousness said, "C'mon! She's talented, she's done wonderful work and yeah, she uses a little crack every now and again..."
He couldn't understand why we all burst out laughing.
That reminds me, you guys think K/Gou will pitching tonight if Loaiza falters.
I didn't realize we had teachers on board. Good to hear my fellow dodger fans also share my experiences in the classroom too.
I teach second grade in downtown LA.
But at least we were entertained.
The Dodgers, they be rolling...
I had him when the Dodgers scored their four runs, but not in the bottom half of that inning or since.
I have fifteen...ten, ten Commandments!
When you coming up here?
Andruw Jones
2008: $9,000,000 plus $5,100,000 signing bonus
2009: $15,000,000 plus $2,100,000 signing bonus
2010: $5,000,000 signing bonus
rockies nada
(crickets)
Okay, I'll try another one later.
I want you to be able to properly amortize your anger.
You know, for accounting purposes.
5 or 6?
Cool.
You have to add more spice to it like Vinnie just did.
NADA!
Single to short left, out at home.
Repeat the above sentence two more times.
single, picked off.
single, picked off
single
single
single
.... Now, if any other ball was put in play and an out was recorded would that be a fielders choice and thus, no official hit?
I have Dish & it is periodically blacking out but not enough were I'd be PO'ed or anything.
Right, the official scorer must rule that the play would have resulted in a hit if the ball had not touched the runner.
so I guess it is six. Thanks.
Although, we did not account for this in the bet.
Bill Barnes, Master Strategist!
Someone call Plaschke. We're being denied our Vin Scully!!!
Also, watching that beanball replay, Bennett is asking to get hit on his throwing hand on every play.
An SF is not an official AB so the Grand Slam Cycle is still alive.
Unless Bob says otherwise. :-)
Loaiza is doing his best to make Schmidt look like an improvement.
But bhsportsguy has the scenario that I believe is correct.
Ned?
Kuo is also an improvement.
Mr. Timmerman, I enjoy your work. WIth that said you have just presented a puzzle that will haunt the inner recesses of mind until I manage to solve it.
7!
Sounds good to me.
for a minute there I was gonna get upset but then I read "as a pitcher"... ;o)
I hope he gets Munson'ed.
This is getting sad.
I'm in Hawaii watching the game in HD on the part-time FSNHD channel and can hear Vin just fine
Yeah, that's the ticket.
The worst part is that when the offense does this well in the first two innings, they retire for at least four innings.
Well 6-3 in about 3 minutes. I'm losing my optimism.
His balance is completely off. It's a simple case of his WHOLE weight pulling towards third.
I can't imagine they haven't gone back and looked at film and tried to correct something.
Maybe he should pull a Bobby Rayburn and wear his old Atlanta jersey underneath.
I explained that she should think of this experience as though she were sitting in the stands. She can't remember the last live game she attended, though, so that's not helping much.
As for Andruw Jones, don't the Dodgers have a hitting coach to fix wonky swings?
Remember: Andruw Jones will make roughly $50,000 a day over the course of his contract.
Jones must have hit a lot home runs in 2005-2006 to left because all he does is try and pull everything.
He had that brief period where he just took those pitches and then when he got some walks but apparently that has stopped for a while.
The only thing left for him to do is to crowd the plate and force pitchers to work the inside of the plate.
And I'm sure in batting practice, he goes with the pitch and hits the ball to right but he probably feels he needs to homer on every at bat so he overswings and finds himself in bad counts.
before replying, look at those 12 rules at the bottom right.....
Jones seems to fare better in his last at bat or two then he does in his first couple of at bats. Anyone got stats on that? (I can't bear to look at any Andruw Jones stats.)
Oh and since it was asked, Loiaza needs about a 6 run cushion. Oh wait, he basically had that. 8 runs?
Er, not really.
Holliday greets him rudely. Told you, 8 runs would make me feel safer.
When's Schmidt back? When's The Minotaur comin'?
It's usually been Delwyn Young doing it.
Please make it stop. Please make it stop.
I hope it's the K one.
Other things I don't like:
1. second game in a row with Pierre.
2. second game in a row with martin at 3B.
I don't understand any of these choices.
Baseball players get paid a lot, we get it.
Sigh. I'm gonna stop watching this game. The good stuff all happened when I was not watching, the bad stuff when I was. It's all my fault!
Propane.
I don't want to bring Kershaw up yet.
Loaiza was throwing PEAKING AT 84MPH K/Gou would look like he was throwing 97mph the way Loaiza was throwing but yet he asks for off-speed stuff. not good, oh well.
The Rockies were due to break out at some point. You had to figure Loiaza would be one candidate to help them. Hopefully that was it for awhile.
I think it was a slider or curve & the Rockies hitter just nailed it. I've been wrong on pitch selection (thinking it was one pitch & then realizing it was another) but I think it really was a curve of some kind.
I think I actually defended Bennett once. Not sure what got over me, but I did! Of course I was the founding member of the Free Mike Lieberthal Society, but then the Dodgers misunderstood what I was asking for.
Uh oh, De La Rosa's settled down.
I hear you BH, like Marty says "Lo que sera sera"...
Being on a 7 game win streak is great.
Losing a 6-0 lead isnt.
P.S. I am not a bad person.
I won't say it.
15 strikes
2 balls.
I don't think Loiaza pitching is beyond criticism, I'm glad they took him out. But there were reasons why Kuo wasn't starting too. I saw him burn 30+ pitches and walk in a batter in the first inning, in Cincinnati he blew up in the 4th.
Probably neither is the answer in the long run, all you want is for the combo to get to the 7th.
Kent may break my offense rule, especially with Martin batting.
Rockies and Sky Sox are my teams.
Oh good, never mind.
I have no idea who the Sky Sox are.
I totally hear your point BH but if I had any say in it watching K/Gou for a few years now I'd definitely have him throw his heater first & for most specially knowing how slow Loaiza was throwing.
and wow as I type that James smacks one out thata baby Lonestar!
He's put up some gaudy RBI totals at Coors in his brief career.
Your bullpen is sponsored by Arco.
It ain't fun to be a manager.
The Bottomley/Whiten Watch Force is located in Creve Couer, Missouri.
That hit probably won the game with Kuo pumping strikes in.
It's like he can't see the game he's calling. Sure, maybe the play was a little confusing (I don't have it on TV), but I've heard Steiner get home run calls wrong before.
LOL'ed it's weird but stuff like that makes me kind of like him even more.
I sense a trend...
1) He's gotta work in the advertising. Vin does not--and should--have to do this.
2) He works with a color commentator. It's a different world working in someone else's commentary. Not better, not necessarily worse--just different.
3) He's being compared to Vin Scully.
All that being said (I love talking about baseball broadcasting), his performance has been very uneven since he came to the Dodgers.
1) He's gotta work in the advertising. Vin does not--and should not--have to do this.
But his daily show on XM is a thing of beauty. I really enjoy how he talks with as Charlie would call them, "Fellow Ink Stained..."
LaRoche was scheduled to play tonight in Louisana but he was replaced before he had his first at bat in the second. He did start in the field and participated in a pick off play that ended at 3B.
But, that throw back to the mound is still painful..
Cristian Guzman
Augie Ojeda
James Loney
After seeing the non-blurred picture of that I can say they are not missing much.
Yes, it seemed obvious they were going to bring them all back. My neighbor was a UCLA cheerleader. A girl I went to school with since kindergarten and two other girls from my high school just made the Raiderettes.
To or from?

That is just plain stupid.
In my wildest dreams, UCLA plays in the 2010 Rose Bowl because USC is off playing in the BCS game.
Allegedly.
So LaRoche is no longer on the 25-man roster.
My point is that LaRoche went out of the Vegas game going on right now after he played in the field in the first inning.
