Rule #2? I attacked no poster. I was attached for suggesting an (in these parts) unconventional strategy. I'm not being argumentative -- I'm not trying to, anyway. My belief in the mediocrity of this team is deeply and honestly felt. I want the best, but I question whether their best is good enough. Hyperbole and sarcasm? Are these not two of the most effective methods of communication? Is it hyperbole to question why the Dodgers have been ineffective in the playoffs for twenty years? That's not hyperbole, it's reality. Perhaps your rules are obfuscating your eyes.

I'm gone for the night. Goodnight, all.

I always try to make it a point to watch Billingsley games so I hope we get a treat tonight. Hopefully this is another start to us simply calling him #1.

Really interesting albeit far fetched rumor from ESPN:

Manny to the Marlins for Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton they would then spin them off to Pittsburgh for Jason Bay.

4 That's all over the air waves. Why far-fetched? The question, I guess, is why the Marlins want to end up with an incredibly expensive, old player. Maybe Boston pays a bunch of his salary?

1 I had the same reaction with the Baseball Project CD, at first it's just kind of a fun little novelty, but the more you listen, the more you realize how good it is. The Dodger-related songs are very cool, too. Only problem is the one about Fernando is sung completely in Spanish, so I have no idea what the words are.

The Marlins wouldn't have to pay much since the season is close to over and he might just get the Marlins into first place in the NL Middlin' East.

"Are you under the impression we have a pipeline to the front office?" is the answer/question a commenter gets when asking if there were any rumblings on the power bat front.

I knew Jon hated the deadline, but yikes.

Is Boston can get Bay for Manny, that is a fantastic return for him. The Red Sox needs to get rid of Manny if only because Boston is addicted to Manny's sweet words of Manny Being Manny. (As for Gammon's saying its all Manny's fault, who the hell gave out info that Manny's intentionally checked out for a strike out a couple of weeks ago? You're telling me the Red Sox didn't leak that to make Manny look like a jerk?) There's no good or bad guy in the Manny Daytime soap, just two sides who just need to stay away from each other.

I'm not swayed by any kind of attack that doesn't involve someone being called sheeple.

In this case, I would have preferred "Perhaps your rules are obfuscating the eyes of you sheeple"

2008-07-30 18:39:20

11 True. And, if he makes the difference between post-season and no post-season, he more than pays for that salary.

So, if it does make some financial sense for Florida, why is the rumor far-fetched, 4 and 12 ?

13 - I guess I didn't know how to respond to the question, "Are the Dodgers in on any trades?" Of course, they're in discussions, yet how can you respond to that question without bringing up rumors that probably have no basis in reality.

But I guess the verdict is that I was at fault. Comment 73 in the last thread threw me for a loop, as it took my "I don't know" and turned it into something else, considering I've espoused none of the three opinions about Ethier, Hu and Schmidt the commenter suggested.

But I guess I overreacted, so I apologize.

The fact that I admit that I don't have inside information on the Dodgers - I don't know how that gets translated as "Jon hates the trading deadline" or "Jon doesn't want the Dodgers to improve."

AS we all know, the Dodger rotation is now Billingsley, Kuroda, Kershaw, Johnson, and Lowe. Penny might not make it back this year. Schmidt most likely will not make it back this year. Kuroda might be hurt. Park and Stultz are the backups.

Is a Maddix or Byrd acquisition for precaution or might the Dodgers trade Lowe?

The Commissioner's Office has been informed of a deal involving Pittsburgh, Boston, Florida.

Commish approval required, that means a bunch of cash. Presumably the Sox will pay Manny's salary.

36 Penny is minutes away from taking the mound in his first rehab start for the 66ers. He is scheduled to take the mound again for the 51s on the 4th and could take over Johnson's slot in the rotation on the 9th if all goes well. Maybe a strong rehab start tonight influences how aggressively the D's pursue a deal for an arm before the deadline?

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez's remaining salary)

From Dodgers.com:

"When you have young players, even if with the player you can get, you may not want to give up a young player who isn't as good as he's going to be," said Torre. "Those are the ground rules. Matt Kemp is good now and in a couple years he'll be special. Kemp may be better than the guy you're going to get, and that guy probably is making a ton of money. That's just good business sense there."

I just really hate Pierre as a player. He offers literally nothing, I feel. So I take Jones's defensive superiority and the fantasy that one day he might return to half of what he once was, which would be better than twice what Pierre currently is, and run with it.

This team might be better with Jones in center and JP sitting. Certainly, its a better defensive outfield, Jones may be sucking it at the plate, but he's still okay on defense.

...Oh wow, I thought Kemp was out by a mile on that steal, but Castillo couldn't hold on it.

I remember hearing something about Penny (and Billingsly) saying that having Maddux on the staff improved them tremendously.

I took the Metrolink to Union Station, then the Redline (actually the Purple line) to the 7th St/Metro station and then walked a couple of blocks to the Los Angeles Central Library today. I have been wanting to see it for a while but what spurred me into going was the Dodgers photograph collection.

There are two rooms full of original prints from the Herald-Examiner, Security Pacific and a couple of other collections from 1958 to 1988. There are a few older photos, like Lefty Philips signing an 18 year old Don Drysdale to his first contract in front of Don's parents. A 1949 photo of the shanty town in Chavez Ravine was also very interesting.

If you remember the Dodgers "back in the day", as Kevin Kennedy likes to say, do yourself a favor and come see these great images.

The exhibit opened on July 12th at the Los Angeles Central Library. It is located in the first floor galleries.

According to my limited knowledge of free agency rules I think Billingsley has three years before he can file for free agency after this year. I think he's someone we should definitely try to sign long term. I'll pull numbers out of my posterior:

2009 - 5 mil
2010 - 6 mil
2011 - 8 mil
2012 - 9 mil
2013 - 10 mil (option)
2014 - 11 mil (option)

4 year, $28 million guaranteed, is this a reasonable deal for either side? How about Russell Martin, would a similar contract be reasonable?
