Clayton Kershaw enters today's game with five consecutive quality starts, totaling 31 innings, 34 baserunners, 29 strikeouts, two home runs allowed and a 1.45 ERA. His pitch counts for those games have been 86, 89, 100, 108 and 96.

* * *

Since he essentially became the starting right fielder this month, Andre Ethier has sat out four games. On the days before being benched, he is a combined 1 for 17 with two walks.

On August 12 against today's left-handed starter, Cole Hamels, Juan Pierre started and went 1 for 4. Ethier grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, then had a game-winning RBI single in the ninth.

Ethier, who homered Friday night, is starting today.

Outfield/designated hitter starts for the season, through Friday:
113 Matt Kemp
99 Andre Ethier
79 Juan Pierre
55 Andruw Jones
19 Manny Ramirez
18 Delwyn Young

Outfield innings this season:
1,032 Kemp
899 Ethier
666 Pierre
488 Jones
177 Ramirez
148 Young

* * *

If Russell Mountain catches nine innings today, that will give him exactly 1,000 for the season.

I hope Martin does catch 9 innings, because, barring a late-inning move to 3rd, catching fewer than 9 would mean either an injury or a Dodger loss (no bottom of the 9th).

Both Florida and Philly, but Florida especially, are fighting to stay in the NL East race now that the Mets have figured things out. I suspect both AZ and LA will lose 2/3 or worse this weekend.

We need more games against the Padres and Nats!

51s' pitching, power pave way to win

>> Blake DeWitt had a triple and a double, Chin-lung Hu went 3-for-4 with a double, and both drove in two runs. A.J. Ellis had two doubles, and Angel Chavez went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

51s starter Jerome Williams (1-2) shut out Colorado Springs (66-66) on two hits and one walk in five innings. Relievers James McDonald and Justin Orenduff each allowed one hit and no walks in two innings. <<

Kyle Russell had two home runs yesterday and is OPSing 1.004 at Ogden in 51 games. He leads the team in HR's, RBI's, total bases, and walks. He also leads the team in strikeouts. 25/63 K/BB. He also doesn't have an error in the field.

Manny feels like 'I'm on vacation' with Dodgers

>> "The guys have received me with open arms, it's been great," Ramirez said of his new teammates. "It feels like I'm on vacation; I'm here for another month or two. After this, I don't know what's going to happen. I'm living day by day." <<

## Ramirez has surprised his new teammates with his defense as well.

"He gets real jumps in the outfield," Loney said. ##

While Andruw Jones hasn't been able to play with a tweak in his right knee for the past four games, he has been serving as first base coach for Class AAA Las Vegas. The 51s lost 13-0 with Jones coaching first on Thursday, but came back to win 12-0 last night. -via Diamond Lueng.

2008-08-23 11:56:37
30.   Tripon
28 I was referring more about Lambo taking over Left Field if and when Manny leaves. I don't know how good a fielder he is, but I'm going to assume he's not as good, as say Andre Ethier, and more like Manny since the Dodgers seemed to have moved him from 1st base, to Right field, and then to left field.
2008-08-23 12:04:33
31.   silverwidow
30 I think Manny will be a Yankee next year, so it's a moot point for me.

It's hard to say where Lambo will end up defensively, but his bat will get him to the majors.

If the PVLs like Nomar, Kent, Maddux, Lowe etc. are not resigned then there should be about $23M available in 2009 (assuming Blake is resigned at about $9M) to sign a pitcher (CC) OR a hitter(Manny?). Since we cannot afford both what do we need most in 2009, an ACE pitcher or a power hitter?

1 Sorry, I'm late to the dance Jon, but I totally agree with you about that commercial. They make the roll-over minutes seem like they are fun to waste. Also, I really hate the MLB blackout rules. Here in the Portland market the are showing the CWS vs Rays game on fox instead of the Dodger game. What!? How lame do you have to be. Why are they doing that?
Because of that though, I have no way to watch the Dodger game as it's blacked out on MLB.tv. MLB has some really good policies aimed at alienating fans. Cheers.
