Elbert On His Way Up
2008-08-28 18:44
by Jon Weisman

The Dodgers plan to recall Scott Elbert on Friday, according to Tony Jackson of the Daily News.

Update: Clayton Kershaw will be optioned to Las Vegas to make room for Elbert, but return after September 1, in time to make his next scheduled start, according to Diamond Leung of the Press-Enterprise.

9-2 Nationals.

Jon, what did we do to deserve THIS?

Answering 278 from the prior thread, the Nats have swept only Seattle (6/13-16) and Cincinnati (8/1-3) this year.

The nats are the better team. What do you expect?

Anyway, our revenge is that the Dodgers losing to the Nats knocks them out of last place to get first pick of the draft. No Stephen Strasburg for them. Hahahahahaha.

Congrats Scott! At this point in time, he is probably more ready for the majors than Kershaw.

26 - I guess it's just the timing. No 7 game road skid is fun/acceptable at any point of the season, but it's just so darn deflating that it's NOW - and to be comprehensively beaten by the Nats, it's just salt in the wounds.

Really, only Ethier and Kemp are having great years, both setting career high's offensively.

Everyone else is having a down year.

On the pitching end, Billingsley and that's it. Oh and Kuo coming out of the bullpen has been spectacular, along with Broxton.

I would rather be swept by those Montreal Expos teams, at least we'd be making bad French-Canadian jokes. Instead, we just lamented the demise of the Dodgers realistic chances for the playoffs. (Yes, we're only 3 and a half out, but a team doesn't go on a 7 game losing streak and expect to win anything in a middle of a playoff race.)

This was posted after the Dodger loss Tuesday, and before the Webb game in San Diego by the AZ beat writer Nick Piecoro:

"The Dodgers have already lost and the Diamondbacks have Brandon Webb on the mound tonight. Basically, if they don't lead by at least 3 1/2 games by the time the Dodgers come to Chase Field on Friday, it's got to be a disappointment."

At least the Dodgers helped out in this regard.

43 - Brandon Wood was not somebody you wanted on your major league roster prior to about July 17, if memory serves. He had huge holes in his swing, struck out constantly, and just wasn't major league ready. Then in a doubleheader game on that date, he just started hitting and hitting and hitting, and more importantly, taking walks. It wasn't Jason Giambi levels of walks, but it was very noticeable compared to his previous levels of production. I don't know for sure (and I have the database to prove it but I'm too lazy to run the queries) but I would guess that something like half to 2/3rds of his 30-odd home runs hit in the PCL this year came after that date. I mean, it was like a light switch came on and all of a sudden he was back in the Cal League and torching balls everywhere.

69 - I was close. The date was July 19, and he's hit 17 homers since then; during that time, Wood has hit .350/.433/.755 with 21 walks and 39 strikeouts in 143 at bats.

Just got back from the game. I was trying to stay positive, but watching them stink up that (remarkably boring) new stadium made me unleash so many rule 1 violations that my girlfriend insisted we leave by the seventh inning. I stayed around to watch Bison's at bat, and watching him strike out looking really put a cherry on top of a really terrible night at the ballpark.

79 - Stanford's recruiting was already picking up, they've landed some big guys and are in on a couple of really big guys. That said, the empty seats won't help with recruiting (nor will the sea of orange on Monday I guess). Harbaugh is a rising star - Stanford is a mere stop along the road for him.

Is 7000 tennessee fans a sea of Orange?

(Thats the UCLA estimate)

And it would be 3,000 more then saw Petyon Mannin play there a decade ago. If I remember correctly UCLA recruited fine despite the crowd size after that. Of course the 20 game win streak helped.

I will go back to lurking but in my opinion the Dodger negativity should not be diluted with UCLA negativity.
