8 I had to look it up, too. During senior year of college, my roommate found a folder that had written on it "Finis Coronat Opus." He bought the folder just because of that. We spent the semester incorporating the phrase as a slogan in every project we had to do.

12 I took two years of Latin in undergrad, and I find it shocking sometimes how little of it people know here at law school.

Actually, I only find it shocking when there are obvious cognates. My favorite is how confused people were my first year by "in loco parentis."

Reminds me of the time I saw my first space shuttle launch.
I was at a souvenir shop about to buy a shirt bearing the mission patch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STS-110). Some guy looked at the names (Bloomfield, Frick, Ross...) on the logo's border and then asked the clerk in all seriousness, "Is that Latin?"

52 "quod" is "what", "es" is "you are."
"If you are what yo are, what you are is what you is"? Is that it?
"Esse" means "to be." Or, if you like metaphysics, it means the being of a thing, in contradistinction to its essence (essentia). "Enim" means truly and is often simply used for emphasis.
"God truly says to be to be to be"?

79.   gpellamjr
"es" and "est" respectively are the third-person-singular forms of both "sum, esse" meaning "to be" and "edo, esse" meaning "to eat". Furthermore "esse esse esse" has the first "esse" is the accusative form of the gerund of "to be" and the final "esse" as the gerund of "to eat", the middle one being the infinitive in indirect speech introduced by "dixit".

So this little Latin saying, which I made up to impress a professor who had hitherto been thoroughly unimpressed by me, says:

"If you are what you eat, what you eat is what eats you. Indeed God says that being is eating (or 'that to be is to eat')."

The solution offered in 59 fails only in not recognizing the forms of "edo", and in not realizing that "te" would have no meaning without a transitive verb.

But don't get excited. It's only Pablo Ozuna, whom they DFA'd last week. They purchased his contract and cleared a 40-man spot by placing Mario Alvarez on the 60-day DL. And I BELIEVE this is the first time this season, spring training and regular-season combined, that I have ever typed the name Mario Alvarez. If you didn't know, he's a pitcher. We don't even know what's wrong with him yet, but Rawitch is trying to find out.

218 I don't remember names, but the argument was that the Dodgers could have helped solved their outfield problem(with Manny, there was six outfielders on the team, including D. Young) by trading Ethier instead of LaRoche, and creating a 3rd base hole again. Basically, some people thought LaRoche was worth more than Ethier.

LaRoche might be in the long run, but Ethier blocks both Jones and JP. That's a great thing.

I wouldn't think Dodgers would let Vin retire without publicizing his year long farewell.

I just got into New Hampshire and am delighted to find that the Dodgers are winning! This is a nice turn in what was a really terrible day. :)

Dodgers Trade Vin Scully to ESPN for Orel Hershiser, Erin Andrews, and a commentator to be Named Later

Quoted Colletti, "Scully has been great for fifty nine year, but we don't know how much longer he has left or whether we could re-sign him. We needed to get younger and felt that Orel was the right man. Plus Andrews gives us a babe field side."

Quoted Scully "I don't feel bad about this at all. I've been a Dodger since before most of my listeners were born. But I'm nearing the end of my career and this will give me a chance to announce in the postseason. I understand the Dodgers' decision to get younger and respect that. It's just how this game goes."

One of the little things I love about baseball is a leadoff man taking his time in the on-deck circle to allow his pitcher extra time to get back to the dugout.

It's in the same category for me as the mutual respect between catchers and umpires, who will stall if the other is hurt, either via taking a trip to the mound (catchers) or cleaning the plate (umps).

I eat that stuff up.

I'm glad Joe stuck with Lowe there. I would have been royally peeved if he had taken him out, because he let him bat with the bases loaded. If he had used a pinch hitter instead, I'm sure it would have been Sweeney and his professional haircut, which would have been pretty lame because there is not much difference between Lowe and Sweeney at the plate these days. I went over all of the NL's batting stats, and every team but three have at least three pitchers who are hitting better than Sweeney, two teams have two pitchers who are hitting better, and one team (Mets, I think) has only one pitcher with a higher avg than Sweeney.

5-0 hasn't been comfortable sometimes

The largest lead the Dodgers have blown this year has been 3 runs, and they are 49-6 when they score 5 or more runs.

The only NL clubs with a better record when scoring 5 runs are the Cards (62-7) and Cubs (67-8). No other NL clubs have lost fewer than 10 such games. When the Dodgers score, they win, just about better than everyone.

Yes, and that small sample size has brought his season's numbers up to a scintillating .134/.250/.171 with three extra-base hits. Your pinch hitting specialist should be able to do one of two things: get on base, or hit for power (or both). Even if he somehow makes contact, there is almost no chance of him driving in a runner on first. Anyway, I shouldn't complain on a day Andre goes 5 for 5.

Was a great night at the Park. Got there nice and early no traffic and nofood lines. Lot of fun. Seemed like a lot of people didn't know about the change in start time cause first few innings were empty. Bummer for Dre in the 6th butwhat a great game.

Perhaps the best news for the Dodgers is that Haren looks cooked. I don't know if he's tired or hurt but he does not have anything on his pitches. I don't see him recovering in the next three weeks either. Thus a critical component of the D'Backs line-up may be missing down the strech. (IMO, of course).

532 Hey, I never said it makes sense!

Kinda interesting that Repko is the de facto 4th outfielder now, which I mean defensive left fielder replacement.

Yes, but a .250 OBP won't cut it in the post season. If he takes up a roster spot at the expense of someone more versatile (AKA every player in the organization from A to AAA), a lot of us won't be happy. When a substantial percentage of the league's pitchers are outhitting your pinch hitting specialist, that should be a sign.

527 This doesn't help you, but everyone else who's not in LA, root for the Mets game to get rained out. If it does, the Dodgers game gets picked up for all those areas.

534 - Yeah, JP seems really buried now. Hasn't started two games in a row since early August.

I don't think Repko's overtaken Pierre. JP's got a sore back and is out for a few days.

The Bob Carpenter Book is 1-0! Granted, this was a 'pratice' score while watching on TV. I debated whether or not to do it, but I decided it was too different from what I had been using that it deserved one test go before it was reserved for in-attendance events.

That look back at 2001 was nice. Daughter loved seeing footage of Shawn Green again. Not sure Green's decision to sit out Yom Kippur was on par with 9/11 but still enjoyed the clip.

539 And the last couple days were as a defensive replacement. Pierre is the fourth guy as a starter. Repko is the defensive replacement. Repko haz cannon.

539 - Agreed, but the rationale for him getting into a game, even as a late inning replacement, has narrowed now that there is an actual defensive outfielder available and Dre is hot. Not saying that he won't, as Torre might want to keep him sharp, but he is on a pretty short leash.

Will Hannah Storm be reporting on tropic storm Hanna?

A near perfect game. No complaints at all. Maybe we should look into re-signing Lowe after all!

A delightful evening at the ballpark! I couldn't believe the Ethier near-triple. He and Cesar Izturis get honorable mention for sure.

Did Orel say anything about the Dodgers' passion tonight?

548 - With a 2.64 ERA going into tonight at DS, one would think that he would want to stay, but a big fat three-year contract is likely to lure him away, no?
