"I love the Diamondbacks."
Bad Omens, Bad Omens.

Actually, I only find it shocking when there are obvious cognates. My favorite is how confused people were my first year by "in loco parentis."
Contra spem spero!
I was at a souvenir shop about to buy a shirt bearing the mission patch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STS-110). Some guy looked at the names (Bloomfield, Frick, Ross...) on the logo's border and then asked the clerk in all seriousness, "Is that Latin?"

I have found that the law is fond of repeating itself.
I will miss sharing a Warp Core Breach with my wife at Quark's Bar.
In Chinese it's "ai" (pronounced "eye")
On the Northwestern application 10 years ago they asked me what I would write on some NU rock and they gave me about an inch of space for my answer. Ad Astra Per Aspera beat Think Blue.
41 - I'm glad no school ever asked me a question like that when I was 18. It would have been bad. Very, very bad.
Air it all you want now. It shall be useless in 2 months.

Let's see. Hmm. If something who something who something is who you are. God something says, something something something?
My undergrad/masters school's motto was: "Enter to learn, go forth to serve"
"If you are what yo are, what you are is what you is"? Is that it?
"Esse" means "to be." Or, if you like metaphysics, it means the being of a thing, in contradistinction to its essence (essentia). "Enim" means truly and is often simply used for emphasis.
"God truly says to be to be to be"?
Manny's translation was not exactly word for word.
I think D4P is a doctor
Anyway.
Let's go Blue!
By some theories the later in the season, the more tired, the more sink.
68 What are the idioms in there? Are there any?
But you need to measure his heart to see how good he is.
My girlfriend, in theory, has four years of latin under her belt. Any time I quiz her she comes up empty on memory, but I'll give it a shot.
Now I do.
So this little Latin saying, which I made up to impress a professor who had hitherto been thoroughly unimpressed by me, says:
"If you are what you eat, what you eat is what eats you. Indeed God says that being is eating (or 'that to be is to eat')."
The solution offered in 59 fails only in not recognizing the forms of "edo", and in not realizing that "te" would have no meaning without a transitive verb.
Ethier just reached 20.
The Dodgers may be in the playoffs in spite of Ned Coletti's wheeling and dealing.
I think he's worked himself up to about 1.75 status.
Pirouettes have been known to kill the hopes of franchises for 10 or more years.
After two pitches, Brian Giles tied the game on a home run.
Belated "Squee-thier!" btw.
I'm 5'6.
Turtle and E from Entourage are also my height.
Ask Bokonon42.
Good Job Ethier.
77 This is also my problem.
Sabathia, despite giving up only one run, wasn't particularly sharp. He looked to be laboring on every pitch.
Or maybe bugging Ken?

If anybody can get it to work, it's on the "Video" tab, right side.
...And when the heck did Berroa turn into A-Rod?
weird pitch selection from Haren there.
And Haren is all shook up.
His jersey sells for over $300 at Dodgers stadium.
And there's Vin saying that Manny's protecting ethier.
What film was it?
The statue is insulted by being compared to Adam Dunn. I apologize.
Manny hates walking, and its all because Ethier keeps on getting doubles.
that he has a tired look and struggles in the second half.
171 To be fair, today and Wednesday Ethier singled and reached second on a throw.
I have no idea what Al Gore's favorite movie is. Does it involve PowerPoint?
http://www.insidesocal.com/dodgers/
Something tells me the Dodgers are being a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit sneaky here. Does Ozuna see any time other than a pinch runner? There's no need of his defense at 2nd with both Hu and DeWitt here.
And under different circumstances and such, I bet 2.5 and I would be close friends.
Well, I'll be jiggered.
Ah hah! Bob's favorite movie is "Career Opportunities." I knew it.
I'm glad that day didn't come.
Gregory Hines' career was derailed greatly by death.
The correct answer for those not clicking on Sam's link is "Local Hero."
Good sign so far that we're discussing Bob's movie watching and not agonizing on the game!
LaRoche might be in the long run, but Ethier blocks both Jones and JP. That's a great thing.
I agree. The sacrifice with a runner on first and two outs is a bad play.
Just kidding.
And it's not looking like my prediction is going to stand. This Angel Berroa is the Dominican David Eckstein. Just throw the previous numbers out the window. Don't be surprised if he makes a run at WS MVP.
Also loved his comment about Berroa's positioning.
In negotiations with the Dodgers, Vin has "hand."
From this week's Sports Illustrated:
But here's Vin Scully, age 80, at least one more year on his contract,
I just got into New Hampshire and am delighted to find that the Dodgers are winning! This is a nice turn in what was a really terrible day. :)
http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/snidedu01.shtml
http://articles.latimes.com/2006/feb/22/sports/sp-scully22
I need some sort of filter to block that whole string of comments.
Dodgers Trade Vin Scully to ESPN for Orel Hershiser, Erin Andrews, and a commentator to be Named Later
Quoted Colletti, "Scully has been great for fifty nine year, but we don't know how much longer he has left or whether we could re-sign him. We needed to get younger and felt that Orel was the right man. Plus Andrews gives us a babe field side."
Quoted Scully "I don't feel bad about this at all. I've been a Dodger since before most of my listeners were born. But I'm nearing the end of my career and this will give me a chance to announce in the postseason. I understand the Dodgers' decision to get younger and respect that. It's just how this game goes."
Perhaps 3.5 is the over/under on hits tonight!
That Ethier is so hot right now!
Thomas
3.5?
Grabowski Principle? (Aware of the Jason, not the Principle)?
I did feel like I was taking crazy pills when Ethier wasn't starting as much.
Maybe one day Pierre will break out Magnum on us and we will all fully appreciate his greatness. :)
3.5 was a nickname given to Ethier in 2006, when it was discussed that he would never quite be good enough to be a starter. A cross between the 3rd & 4th OF, if you will.
3.5 - from when Andre Ethier looked like he was almost a regular.
Grabowski Principle - see http://tinyurl.com/3rad92
Grabowski Principle
When a pitcher does something bad in a situation he should have obviously have gotten an out -- i.e. a hit to Jason Grabowski -- that pitcher should be immediately replaced.
Confused because Manny has the ability to throw.
Can you guess the team?
It's in the same category for me as the mutual respect between catchers and umpires, who will stall if the other is hurt, either via taking a trip to the mound (catchers) or cleaning the plate (umps).
I eat that stuff up.
Someone is a big Matt Tuiasosopo fan I see.
Larry Bowa: You're to young to hit for the cycle.
The USGS recorded the magnitude of that event officially as ?
Well it made a couple things in my house fall down, which is stronger than usual. I am never worried, but I listen to GI Joe, because knowing is half the battle.
What's that? I can't hear you. I have two Heismans in my ears.
That should be 2 HR in his last 13 AB, not 3.
This is a guy who tons of people said had no power. Amazing.
Er, I'm going to watch the rest of the game from under my desk just in case.

Betemit.
Sweet, right near me.
I will have to watch a snowy version of "Monk" later.
...Too cold to hold.
I guess If you put Loney and Kemp at 6 and 7 they may act like they aren't neccesary.
I would have just started the next thread with "we are the Ghostbusters and we're in control." :)
.857/.875/1.286/2.161
But instead we are on our own.
An AB. 0 for 1.
Ghostbusters II.
Hu's in! And the bad jokes ensue.
Real Ghostbusters and Filmation's Ghostbusters are both good.
Sacrifices don't count as an AB, but DeWitt wasn't bunting in his groundout.
Casey was just explaining why the move wasn't a triple switch. His arm was simply too sore to pitch. :)
Hats off to Lowe. My money says he gets a CG.
Not unless Ben Christensen was facing the Dodgers. :)
By definition, that means leaving him in was the right move.

The Journey is blasting.
...AH! THEY BROUGHT BACK JOURNEY. BAD VIBES. BAD VIBES.
LogikReader expects a long 8th inning!
I was under the impression that this was his first at-bat since his recall, did I miss one?
You are correct
he had two games in houston.
Now that I looked it up, he did get a hit in SD the other day.
5 hits and 6 BB
Actually, I like the move since Park needs the work to keep fresh. And its not like Park can give up back to back Grand Slams.
Tomorrow will be our ONLY chance to beat the Diamondbacks AND climb into first place at the same time. All we have to do is beat Brandon Webb. It's never easy...
5-0 hasn't been comfortable sometimes
The largest lead the Dodgers have blown this year has been 3 runs, and they are 49-6 when they score 5 or more runs.
The only NL clubs with a better record when scoring 5 runs are the Cards (62-7) and Cubs (67-8). No other NL clubs have lost fewer than 10 such games. When the Dodgers score, they win, just about better than everyone.
493 - bitter, party of one!
495 - excellent question.
I think Elbert's going to have a chance to make the post season roster as well as a 2nd LOOGY. McDonald just has to somehow poke at Maddux's brains during bullpen sessions or something.
That made me lol. I could just imagine Maddux with a piece of skull removed and McDonald poking at his brain.
G'night everyone. Don't let the bed-quakes bite.
Yes, and that small sample size has brought his season's numbers up to a scintillating .134/.250/.171 with three extra-base hits. Your pinch hitting specialist should be able to do one of two things: get on base, or hit for power (or both). Even if he somehow makes contact, there is almost no chance of him driving in a runner on first. Anyway, I shouldn't complain on a day Andre goes 5 for 5.
Perhaps the best news for the Dodgers is that Haren looks cooked. I don't know if he's tired or hurt but he does not have anything on his pitches. I don't see him recovering in the next three weeks either. Thus a critical component of the D'Backs line-up may be missing down the strech. (IMO, of course).
In July, lose 8 straight and 13 of 14, immediately followed by an 11 game winning streak and winning 17 of 18
2008 Dodgers
Lose 8 straight, followed by 6 straight wins and counting...
Kinda interesting that Repko is the de facto 4th outfielder now, which I mean defensive left fielder replacement.
Yes, but a .250 OBP won't cut it in the post season. If he takes up a roster spot at the expense of someone more versatile (AKA every player in the organization from A to AAA), a lot of us won't be happy. When a substantial percentage of the league's pitchers are outhitting your pinch hitting specialist, that should be a sign.
I don't think Repko's overtaken Pierre. JP's got a sore back and is out for a few days.
Did Orel say anything about the Dodgers' passion tonight?
Nope, did not say anything bad about the Dodgers.
We aren't passionate enough for D. Lowe.
They have me on the edge of my seat for sure.
Yeah, I'm not that much of a worry wort, but I was retiring Torre about eight days ago - ha!
