caught this just in time...

Hey Nate, any thoughts on the new Okkervil River album? I just heard it for the first time today.

I bought it last week and I've been listening to it in the background while I do stuff and it hasn't really grabbed me like Black Sheep Boy did and it doesn't really have that amazing standout song like "Westfall" on their first full length, but its not bad. I love Okkervil River so my judgement is a bit clouded. They are playing in Phx and Tucson next Thursday and Friday and I'm def going to one of them...maybe both shows if I'm not too tired.

LATed.

Why are there so many more day games at Wrigley than elsewhere? I believe they were the last, and very late, to get lights, but now that they have them, why so many day games? Do they think that the tradition there fills as many seats as night games would? Are they right - do the weekday day games sell out?

5 Jon is joking. He knows people will be home watching network TV season premieres.

On attendance, even if the Dodgers "sold out" all 6 games, their overall attendace would be slightly below the 2006 season and probably 120K below last year.

It will still be the third highest total tickets sold for the Dodgers but surely a disappointment.

9 Wrigley truly is in the middle of a neighborhood, and while certainly people who live in the area moved there knowing full well a baseball team plays there, I think the Cubs may still want to limit the number of night games out of respect for their neighbors.

I guess in 1982 Murray was probably writing about 1962. Something happened 26 years ago and we still are fearful. Baseball is a crazy game with a lot of twists and turns, and sure we could blow the lead because sometimes these things happen. On the bright side some of you could use 2008 to scare the next generation so they never enjoy a lead in late September, and instead stay afraid of what lies around the corner.

Sounds like the promo to make people buy some limited tickets now to have access to playoff tickets worked out.

43 Jon, with the new season about to begin will we see a rebirth of Screen Jam or should we plan on visiting Season Pass? Have you seen any of this seasons Heroes? Is it worth my time? After season 2 they lost me but since they were wise enough to begin the season on a Dodger off day, I may give them a shot.

Besides The Office, there isn't much I am really looking forward to. I may give Gary Unmarried a chance; Jay Mohr's stand up is pretty good but the show could be really bad. I hope Chuck may have a good sophomore year, but other than that I will be waiting for February and Lost. I was hoping for good things from Entourage, but after two episodes I am left bored and unfulfilled.

12 It will still be the third highest total tickets sold for the Dodgers but surely a disappointment.

Considering that most of the season the team was below .500 and before Manny and Blake the team was like watching paint dry and considering they raised ticket prices after last years disappointing season Fank & Co. should consider this year's attendence a huge success.

About 90 minutes away from THE series of the year in the National League.

The Padres are in Washington.

Plenty of good seats available. I bet Sam DC would even let you sleep on his couch if you wanted to make a weekend trip. Dirk Hayhurst vs. Colin Balester.

27 I think they'd be able to get someone to take Pierre, perhaps not on full salary but perhaps with a nice chunk of relief for the Dodgers. Jones has only one more year, so if Manny is signed to a 3 or 4 year deal, it's only the first year that would be painful.

29. Being the knucklehead I am, a couple of days ago I realized the third and final day of testing falls on the same day as Fan Appreciation Day. Fan Appreciation Day has been a tradition for Syd and I for since she was 5. Its her favorite game and she holds out hope that she can score Manny's autograph. She also thinks, every year, she will win a prize. (Ahh, the naiveté of youth). Being that she is getting older and I'm not sure how many more years she will care about going to the game with her dad, I spoke to the powers that be and am excused from the last day of the final. I will take it with the Monday class which is about a month behind my class. Thus, no recipe memorization for me--at least not for a few weeks.

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the reason that the Cubs originally were scheduled to play us was when the Brewers were ahead in the Wild Card race and two teams from the same divsion can't play in the first round. Otherwise, the Cubs with the best record in the NL will face the wild card team, right? Which if it were today would be the Mets and the Dodgers would play the Phillies in the first round. We will have more issues with pitching against them, but there starting pitching is not as deep. As i see it, we only face the Cubs if the Brewers end up as the Wild Card! Again, that is my understanding from years of following this before!

Perfect opportunity to return Kemp to the leadoff spot. He's had great success against Zito:

11 for 21 with 3 walks

.524/.583/.571/1.155

While, Martin has had little success against Zito so it's a good time to give him a game off. Also, Ardoin has a HR off Zito this season.

107 In some tournaments, you play a scramble which is best ball. It takes longer to play with 4 people because you have to decide which is the best shot, than everyone has to hit from that spot and then you have to go pick up the shots you didn't use.

Both.

Scramble and best ball are not the same thing.

The fact is that it can be really difficult to change your mind, especially when you've taken a public stand on an issue. Nobody wants to be seen as a flip-flopper (I'll stay away from any partisan jabs) or someone without conviction. However, that mindset can often handicap us in making the best decision.

Nicely put, Paul. DePodesta, that is.

From Brian Doh's blog:

Just what was so bad about your Dodgers gig?

In short, spending too much time away from home (seven months out of the year on the road), the realization winning is secondary for 99.9999 percent of the players and the weak moral fiber of many, many, many players, as well as other personnel around the game.

Camel - ball in sand
Alligator - ball in sand

I don't remember the other two. That's how often I play golf.

Really? I've found that best ball/scramble usually moves a lot faster especially if you're a 20+ handicap...it isn't too tough to figure out whose ball to hit especially if there it is only 2x2. Makes golf a little more enjoyable I find as well because it takes a little of the stress knowing you have multiple shots fail/succeed. Just my 2 cents.
