From last thread
Thanks to Xei's simulator I came up with the odds of each team's finish, here they are.
Arizona
6-0 2.2%
5-1 12.2%
4-2 27.0%
3-3 31.6%
2-4 19.8%
1-5 6.3%
0-6 0.8%
Dodgers
6-0 5.5%
5-1 20.7%
4-2 32.3%
3-3 26.3%
2-4 12.0%
1-5 2.8%
0-6 0.3%

Arizona has a 58.5% chance of finishing 3-3 or worse, and LA has 84.8% chance of finishing 3-3 or better. With the most likely outcome being a Dodger finish of 4-2 and Arizona at 3-3 (10.2%). The least likely finish is both teams finishing 0-6 which would happen 3 times in 125,000 tries

5 The people I sit next to mentioned they received their tie-break-tickets last week. I haven't see mine yet, but I'm sure they are on there way.

Also, I mentioned (complained) last week about never winning anything at fan appreciation day. Well, wouldn't you know the first seat called for a prize was my neighbors. They won a $100 Staples gift card which was the perfect prize for a teacher.

Attention fans of The Office (American version). This may or may not interest you, but today a writer for Britain's Guardian newspaper published an attack on the US remake of the British Office on the paper's television blog. It is pretty insulting to Americans in general, frankly. People can comment in response, and I left my own response (my user-name there is "MoreTears"), but I hope some more supporters of the US Office will make their voices heard in the comments section. If you want to comment you have to register first, but it is not a lengthy process. The blog entry in question is titled "Why The American Office Is A Shadow Of The Original." The blog address is:

Eric Stephen -

Going back to your post about clinching dates, I think what happened in 1974, was that the Dodgers were playing in Houston and the Reds lost before their game was over, thereby clinching the division for the Dodgers.

If you look at the box score for that game, you see a lot of subsitutions taking place as the game goes on.

"The biggest problem is the divisional setup in major league baseball. I didn't like it in the 1970s, and I hate it now," Steinbrenner wrote. "Baseball went to a multidivision setup to create more races, rivalries and excitement. But it isn't fair. You see it this season, with plenty of people in the media pointing out that Joe Torre and the Dodgers are going to the playoffs while we're not.

88 Pouring the chili straight in the bag seems like it would be a bit messy, but a favorite of mine at little league games growing up was the Frito boat which is the same thing put in a bowl-like paper plate.

I've noticed that fruits and vegetables only seem to exist on the coasts.

You'd think that with all that farm land up there, they'd be able to grow something.

After tonight, our magic number will either by 5, 4, or 3. Depending on what it is, here are our playoff odds from my simulator>

MN / Pennant Odds / 1 Game Playoff Odds
5 / 78.55% / 18.71%
4 / 92.23% / 9.32%
3 / 98.06% / 3.01%

I vote for the last scenario. :)

I vote Happy Meal, with an explanation.

Watching the Dodgers these days are a lot like watching a horror movie when I was a tot.

You are so wound up in the plot line waiting for the scary moment. Not wanted to watch for fear that you would see the monster, but afraid to miss the good triumphing over the evil that you have to watch between your fingers.

In this case, its leave the room (where the TV is playing), enter the room. Go to the internet, go back to the room. Go to the kitchen, go outside and pet the dog. Go back to the room. Explain to your wife that she can't turn off the TV or watch something else, despite the fact that you are leaving the room for (at times) lengthy intervals.

Am I the only one doing this???

100 I was flabbergasted recently when I went to a Subway in Tampa - when I asked for avocado, not only did it not end up being on the menu, but the girl making the sandwich didn't even know what it was (to be fair, she seemed to be pretty new to the country).

Same here, I only watch the offense unless Kershaw/Chad/Kuo are pitching.

It would be fun to edit a season and offer the package of 162 games in 1/2 hour segments. Not just highlights but the best of each game. I'd be curious to see if I could make it worthwhile to watch in a 1/2 hour without losing all the subtlety of what baseball offers. Whenever I've watched the old World Series packages I'm astonished on what they leave out.

114 That last Nostradamus stanza appears to refer to DePodesta's reign in L.A.:

In the world there will be made a king
who will have little peace and a short life.
At this time the ship of the Papacy will be lost,
governed to its greatest detriment.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm, chips, Diane Lane, and Frito Boats now this is a thread that can distract me from my pessimistic playoff thoughts.

I'm a definite chip snob. Gotto go with Hawaiian Kettle Style Chips (either sweet onion or regular), Cape Cod Classic, or Poore Brothers. We grew up on what we called Frito Boats, they were a high school football game staple. Poured the chili right into the Fritos bags. Maybe it's a Valley thing (Central not San Fernando).

I don't usually get too ga-ga over actresses, but Diane Lane is one of the exceptions. She's always looked good, and seems to have gotten better with age (or maybe it just because my age and tastes have progressed along at the same rate).

Go Dodgers. If we get this one tonight, I'm going to sleep comfortably. If we lose, it might be time to break out the mouthpiece to save myself from teeth grinding.

to chime in on the Office discussion, from an Australian's perspective. The blogger goes too far in calling the US version rubbish, but for me it is a lot more obvious than the UK version. A lot of American TV suffers from that problem, and in a way i think the blogger is trying to suggest the makers of US TV should give their audience more credit.

But i am not in the 'all US TV is rubbish camp' by any means. I love the Sopranos, it's always sunny in Philadelphia, and other shows. But US TV is different, and invidious comparisons were always going to be drawn when they remade a UK show for an American audience. We are probably going to do the same thing when a remake of Kath & Kim for US audiences airs here in Australia. It won't seem as good, to us.
