I still can't get over how Greg Maddux threw fewer pitches in six innings Saturday than Jake Peavy threw in one inning (the fifth) on Thursday.
In other news: Manager Nomar Garciaparra and bench coach Mark Sweeney have given A.J. Ellis his first major-league start today, and Tanyon Sturtze has been named pitching coach.
bench, Mark, Sweeney

What about Lowe? And Manny?
Curses.
This doesn't look like a one and done team to me. Yah!!
Even in the Dodgers' own territory, this has an effect. I'm in Santa Barbara. The only way to get KCAL here is via cable (Cox), which does not carry KCAL in HD, only in SD. So even though I have an HD TV, I can't see these 50 games in HD (in LA, all 50 KCAL games are available in HD). It's also what keeps me from switching to satellite: DirectTV also doesn't carry KCAL. (This is still way better than for poor Angels viewers, with Santa Babara also in their "territory". Even Cox Cable no longer carries KCOP and their 50 games at all.)
Cox also has a very weird arrangement for showing FSN PT games in HD. Instead of a (single) dedicated FSN HD channel, as DirectTV has, showing 75 Dodgers games in HD from PT and I don't know how many Angels games from FSN West, we can find a few on a peculiar channel called MOJO-HD. For many months, the games weren't even listed in the channel guide - you just had to go see if the game happened to be on, usurping regular listed programs. I just happened to stumble upon a game by accident one day last summer. Since July or August this year, they've been listing the games - sometimes Dodgers, sometimes Angels. But about 1/3rd of the time, it's completely wrong - not showing the advertised game, or occasionally showing it when it's not advertised! And, if the game goes on longer than 3 hours, it dissolves into "regular" MOJO programming either after 3 hours, or after 3 1/2 - impossible to know when. This really screws with recording on the DVR - to be safe, I have to record both MOJO and non-HD FSNPT. Which of course means I can't record any other program at the same time.
Still a lot better than your predicament of not seeing the game at all, of course. I've learned all the tricks of working around it. I've also told DirectTV that if they'd just start making KCAL available here, I'd switch to them the same day.

Not surprise there are weather issues for games back east today. My g/f made it back safely, barely, yesterday from Massachusetts before the hurricane hit. Had to take a puddle jumper from Martha's Vineyard to Providence to escape and I was terrified just hearing about it after there was a plane crash on same route the day before. In other words, a lot of rain and violent weather is coming to New England today.
Or we could be up 2-0 coming home facing a guy made of glass, while we send a pitcher with a 2.77 ERA over his last 10 starts.
It happens most frequently when a rookie hits his first homer, but it's also done when banjo hitters or pitchers hit home runs.
Loney was just talking about the long-standing tradition of pretending not to care when a guy who rarely homers finally does. They wait a few seconds, then mob him. They did it to Berroa as well.
Pierre's chronic pouting is a separate issue.
It wasn't anything negative at all. It was a playful thing where the teammates ignore the guy when he gets to the dugout then all mob him in celebration.
They did the same thing after DeWitt's 1st ML HR, and with Ozuna's 1st of this year as well.
I'll try to find his VORP (Value over Replacement Pouter.)
His Pout+ is 130.
See everyone after the game, and go Dodgers!
Jhonny be good!
Barry Zito gets a break.

Heck, if the Dodgers can just get the starters to pitch into the 6th, their chances will dramatically improve.
The Lima Game® is tied for the 7th highest game score by a Dodger starter in the playoffs.

There have been 101 Dodger playoff games, and here's how the above starts ranked in terms of game score:

Cody Ross!
Who has number 101?
Ramon Martinez. Game 1 of the 1995 NLCS.
You're just trying to make him look bad.
Somebody didn't click the link! :)
It was Ramon Martinez in Game 1 of the 1995 series against the Reds.
Never a good thing for a student to hear.
There wasn't room for Bob to mention his 22HRs and .809 OPS.
Ummm, Denver was favored by 10, and some people might like them to win by more than that amount. I will renew my cat hatred if the Broncos don't cover! :)
Now Zoroaster is another matter.
And $390,000 salary.
Copying and pasting is hard.
I can't hear you. My Andruw Jones jersey is covering my ears.
And many other parts of my body.
Bob emulating Vin Scully.
You realize you just set D4P up on a tee for another fat joke, right?
I picked Denver to be high scorer of the week.
I'm in a generous mood today.
I agree. That's why I use Linkification. That way I can set it and forget it...oh wait, I mean "click it rather than cut and paste."
The gripe is that KCAL is not part of extra innings, so those of us outside of LA are deprived of Vin.
Maybe they'll be like my soccer team this morning. We were down 2-1 at halftime and won 11-2.
My Andruw Jones jersey is covering my ears
I bet it's covering your entire body...!
Thankyouverymuch.
I like to think of Andruw along these lines:

oh o.k. One thing I noticed when i was in san diego, you guys get the angels feed (i know that for sure cause i saw FNSW) but do you guys get prime ticket as well? the hotel i was in didn't carry prime ticket.
Twins and Brewers make playoffs
2. What I don't want to happen:
White Sox and Mets make playoffs
3. What will probably happen:

And Scott Linehan's. Please.
Cubs 1, Brewers 0, bottom 3
Not at all, but he is going to have a bad shooting percentage, but will put up points and some assists.
While I don't like the idea playing in philly, I have too many friends that are cubs fans, and they could potentially make my life hell. Plus I think its easier to dislike Philly teams anyway..
so go mets, go cubs, go twins
Bluebleeder, in SD we have FSN West, and my TV guide often tells me an Angel game will be on. However, those games are blacked out. I get all the other stuff normally on FSN West though.
No Prime Ticket for me either.
The Angels are on ESPN Radio 800 down here, but that station has the weakest signal I've ever heard from a supposed major market radio station.
There are some areas where DirectTV offers "neighboring local" channels. If I remember correctly, San Luis Obispo can get Santa Barbara local channels, for example. But they don't offer LA channels to Santa Barbara - I think it must have to do with the agreements with local outposts of the major networks - LA stations of same networks not permitted. I suspect they just haven't bothered about smaller non-network stations like KCAL. I did manage to speak with a higher-level rep from DirectTV, who was interested to hear that Cox shows KCAL in Santa Barbara - he said "if they can, we should be able to too". That's what I'm hoping for, but don't expect much.
Yep, I actually like Lane.
The 49ers having a decent offense upsets me.
Depends how rookies are going in league. Yeah, you definitely need a guard since Felton may be traded or moved to back-up at some point this year.
He is another guy though, that could be traded and will probably have his playing time cut down.
Too bad not a keeper league.
I would guess I could tell by grabbing the beer. But then, I have a functioning nervous system.
But we're talking OPTIMALLY cold. Not just cold. Those blue labels are accurate to within .00001 of a degree F.
Of course, they don't say what happens if the beer gets TOO COLD.
Also, the new windows "I'm a PC" commercial isn't really all that good.
Those stupid gimmicks trick people. My friend bought a whole case of those wide-mouth cans, because he thought it was new cool beer or something. I said, well it is just for pouring the beer, so completely useless for you.
"With each passing out, the balloon tightens for the Brewers."
The balloon tightens?
I think it's a heroin reference.
This, after I lauded Brian Anderson's play by play on Thursday. So disappointing.
...if anyone's interested.
AB - 13
Dingers - 0
BA - .308
OBP - 400
OPS+ - 147
Luckily, neither is a money league.
That's very deep.
Garciaparra already made his first move before the game, scratching Rafael Furcal for an undisclosed reason.
Pierre, LF
Ethier, RF
Kemp, CF
Blake, 3B
Loney, 1B
DeWitt, 2B
Berroa, SS
Ellis, C
Kuroda, P
Hong-Chih Kuo is off the playoff roster for the NLDS. He was tested for circulation problems after he experienced numbness in his fingers warming up last night, and will head to Arizona to pitch in the instructional league in case the Dodgers need him later on.
Also off the roster and headed to Arizona to work out are Chin-lung Hu, Jason Repko and Ramon Troncoso. The Dodgers are also sending Eric Stults to Mexico to play winter ball for Mazatlan, which is managed by Class AAA Las Vegas manager Lorenzo Bundy.
He needs to check the Marlins HR totals.
And here come the pretzels!
...at Shea Stadium
I seem to remember that a team cannot make a roster change during a playoff series. If someone gets hurt they can't DL him and put someone else on - at least until the next round. Is that true? If it is, they may not want to chance Furcal taking up a spot unless he is really ready to go. Same with kent, but he seems to be as good as he's going to be.
I mean they already have one, but they could use more.
Yuck.
We have a similar HD thing going here. Sometimes the FSN broadcast is on an HD channel, sometimes not. The newspaper listings don't seem to know which.
Doesn't seem to matter to the Brewers.
Brian Stokes pitching for the Mets.
all i know is that if i were Eric or any other out of market DT'er I'd be PO'd as well.
Fielder gets an IBB in Milwaukee. Pitching change for the Cubs.
3-1 White Sox after 6 1/2.
*cam
I'm sure someone has said, "Endy Magic!" on the Mets broadcast.
Something close to that... I think I heard the phrase "the Legend of Endy Chavez continues..."
Cody Ross? Ja(y)son Werth? Keith Olbermann?
Looks like the Broncos are gonna get their first L today, choking in Arrowhead. Their defense played a lot better and their offense finally stalled. I blame you guys for betting on them.
Go Dodgers.
1 on with Blake at the bat.
Change that Marlins to a Rays.
2-2 tie in the 7th in NY!
Does it get any better?
ends up striking out the side.
I love baseball man, LOVE IT!
CBS has some really bad games today. This is actually the best game available.
The answer to your question is "Yes. It would be better if the Brewers and Marlins had large leads."
pain > no feeling
Looks like the Moose well get that 20th win. Highly improbable heading into this season and now he might have put the cap on getting into the HOF.
Looks like the Dodgers are headed to Chicago.
5 outs for Lincecum, 5K's.
Braun power, woo hoo
--
Welp, I hope today's game is finally a wake up call for the Broncos' porous defense. Snap out of it boys.
--
AJ Ellis' first ML at bat. Poor guy.
i'm thinking it's gonna go all the way, tough series.
A White Sox win forces Detroit to come down to Chicago tomorrow.
Pitch count after 1.5:
Lincecum: 37
Kuroda: 12
then he throws it down the middle & the cubbie hitter gets a lazer shot single.

Nice, Pierre!
Okay, I'm outta here for a while. A sports-free afternoon.
Nope, just TBA.
Whatever happens, I'm excited for them to visit Wrigley and I'm gonna enjoy every minute!
That's got to be the geekiest joke I've ever tried to pull off.
1-0 Dodgers.
I think they just took him out cause Nomar felt like it...
Shields won 14 games as well.
here in the west coast.
Damion Easley.
Yup, both are tied now. It will be interesting to see what Edwins role is in the playoffs. Cant see him being a starter and he's never been any good as a reliever (especially today). He might just be the garbage mop up guy.
Lindstrom was a Minor Old Met Friend.
If he can gain some consistency in his slider and improve his changeup, I could see him as a 2 during his prime. Right now I'd say he's a 4.
Ryan Church.
In 1965, the Dodgers closed with a run of 22-8 (.733).
Brewers vs. Phillies
Red Sox vs. Angels
White Sox OR Twins vs. Rays
Miller Park is going crazy!
and congrats Brewers!!
I just strongly suspect that it looks like Derek Lowe.
Exactly, our pitching was excellent against the Cubs, and Loney was a couple of foul balls away from having us win two other games. Our offense needs to show up!
What could possibly go wrong?
In fact, I welcome that.
October 1: Dodgers at Cubs (Lowe vs. Dempster)
October 2: Dodgers at Cubs (Billingsley vs. Zambrano)
October 4: Cubs at Dodgers (Harden vs. Kuroda)
October 5: Cubs at Dodgers (if necessary)
October 7: Dodgers at Cubs (if necessary)

Thanks for that score.
In the NL, the only previous matchup between the playoff teams is Dodgers-Phillies (1977, 1978, 1983)
SNY detailed an extensive closing ceremony for Shea Stadium after the game, with their own parade of former Mets and a highlight reel (Willie Randolph is a lock to be left out). Why it was scheduled after the game remains to be seen.
definitely goods news.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_play
Ridiculous.
yeah i know, but at least there still winning.
1-zip.
WOW!
And don't think I'm not going to note that defensive metrics tell us that what looked like a great play by Loney was just our eyes deceiving us.
He is worse than Melvin.
Georgia fell to 11th in AP, 10th in Coaches
Florida 12th in AP, 13th in Coaches.

Bochy probably has never looked at an OBP stat in his life.
Neither has his boss.
Those are regulars...?
Actually, I think my eyes are fooling me.
It is sad all my assumptions about the Raiders blowing it in 4th always come true.
There's practically no fun in watching football anymore.
None of this would be happening if Al Davis were still alive.

If I were him, I'd tell Torre to get a bat.
The NFL sucks.
Has this ever happened? A rally before the playoffs?
Of course, that requires that there be a Game 4 first.
85 wins sounded so much better than 84.

Another praising Torre article by the New York media.
Brewers-Phillies will have the early game, and Red Sox-Angels will have the late game.
Just makes sense.
540 - it happens, I'd kind of like to see what Brian Brohm can do. But I was looking forward to seeing Rodgers for a while now too.
And Kurt Warner has some serious man boobs.
Helps to play in the worst division in the MLB.
Cards 06 (83-78) & Padres 05 (82-80) were worse.
Rather what this team did from August 30th until this past Wednesday. Really incredible job by this ballclub. That's the team that is the N.L West champions.
Everything goes back to zero on Wednesday.
If it's Twins/Rays when is the last time we had a series fully enclosed in domes?

I thought the same thing. Gammons talking good about the Dodgers would normally make me happy too....except that he's now dead to me b/c of his incessant Kemp/Cano trade rumors.

Ok, my very un-scientific and probably very wrong calculations look like this
Dodgers
vs. SD (Peavy 1) 3-3
vs. SF (Cain 1) 4-2
vs. Pitt 3-1
vs. Col 1-2
Total- 11-8
Arizona
vs. SF (Lincecum 2, Cain 1) 3-4
vs. Cin (Harang, Cueto, Volquez) 1-2
vs. StL (Wainwright) 2-2
vs. Col. 4-2
Total- 10-10
So the winner of tonight's game will be playing for the divison crown tomorrow.
What really happened...
Dodgers
Vs. SD 4-2
vs. SF 2-4
vs. Pitt 3-1
vs. Col 2-1
Total 11-8
Arizona
vs. SF 4-3
vs. Cin 1-2
vs. STL 1-3
vs. Col 4-2
Total 10-10
Dodgers 84-78
Arizona 81-81
I didn't get the order right, but close enough.
Just flipped over to the rally, I'm not sure bringing the championship trophy out is a good idea.
Albert Pujols has a 190 OPS+. Just wow
Lester starts game 1 now. Dice-K game 2, Beckett is slotted game 3.
That was fun! Kinda reminds me of those good ol' rallies before big High School games. Ah the days. Excellent work, everyone who made this rally possible.
The players looked spent, and I commiserate. I feel spent just traveling 45 min from SB to Oxnard. Still, it was great to see everybody rally the troops. Man I wish I was there!
Regular season over everywhere but AL Central.
a baseball buddy of mine told me today that he was going to a "celebration" thing with them at 630am?
what?
