April 8 Open Chat: To Shawn, Arizona
2005-04-08 16:26
by Jon Weisman

Shawn Green in an opponent's uniform. Doesn't exactly have the fever of traveling to Miami to see Shaq for the first time, does it? But still, an era ends, an era begins.

Objectively, the Dodgers have better uniforms than the Diamondbacks, don't they?

Tonight's Game

The Dodgers have used 21 players so far this season. Elmer Dessens (tonight's starter), Scott Erickson (Saturday's starter), D.J. Houlton and Paul Bako are standing by.

Shawn Green! He's gone. GOOD!

I was worried since Dessens was starting, but seeing that he's going against Estes, all is well. Dreck v Dreck.

Objectively, my beer league softball team has better-looking uniforms than the D-Backs. And a cooler name, too -- Vandelay Industries.

Last night's game, IMO, featured the two best-looking uniforms in baseball. Much as it pains me to admit it, the Giants' home uniforms are the most attractive ones in MLB. And I think the Dodgers' road jersey is a close second.

When Shawn Green came to the plate, the Dodger Stadium PA people played that Blur "woo hoo" song. About mid way through last season, my buddy and I replaced the "woo hoo" with "4-3!"

I wonder if fans at the BOB will do the same.

Uniwatch.

I should say so. I've never been a fan of the purple-teal color combo a-la~ Hornets. Purple stripes just doesn't work for me.

Dodgers' Uni is classic! Especially, now that the road uniform no longer has player names on the back.

I for one am glad to see Green gone. That said he'll probably hit 40 playing on a no pressure, second division team.

Eric, I hate to say anything good about the Giants but I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion about their uniforms.

But since I can't bring myself to actually say the words... the Giants have uniforms that don't look terrible. That's as far as I can go.

Dessens vs. Estes. Well they are both tremendous pitchers, upper echelon really, what's that Jim?

Oh, well they are both pitching in the major leagues. Do I think we can win this game? Well that would be an easy answer if the question was not so difficult. Do I look forward to seeing Shawn Green? Yes, I miss his swing-and-miss pirouette in the batter's box.

I don't know which abreviation is more annoying: LAD or LAN.

Speaking of the Angels, my wife thinks the new red uniforms are a real step down from the old blue and red.

Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper have taken to calling the Dodgers the Lads during Giants telecasts. As if Krukow's raging homerism wasn't bad enough. Thankfully I got the Extra Innings package this year and won't have to listen to "Kruc and Kipe" (sp?) for my baseball fix

Interesting. I've never thought the Giants uniforms to be particularly fetching. And not just because they're worn by the enemy (I think...but who can ever really know the depths of one's distaste for Barry and his boys?). They're fine, but the color scheme doesn't grab me. Dodgers, Yankees, White Sox, Tigers. Those to me are some of the great ones.

The Wash Nationals finally have a TV deal, so some games, inc. tonight, are on local TV. The CIA is running recruitment ads: "Why work for a company . . . when you can serve your nation?"

ryu,

I saw Greenie with the DBacks on an ESPN2 game. He had an RBI single past the 2nd basemen. Then he grounded out to 2nd.

He wouldn't be bad here in LF or perhaps first if Choi really does end up sucking (of course I still hope he'll be good)...

That DP was instructive. Saenz to Perez to Kent. Vinnie commented that it was "a little ragged around 2nd base." And it was. Not fluid and acrobatic as it might have been with Cora. But ya know what? It worked. 2 outs is 2 outs.

What happened to giving Choi a chance to hit lefties? I mean, if we can't give him a look against a wash-up like Estes, when will he get a chance to improve?
2005-04-08 19:52:30
47.   GoBears
Didn't get to hit against Reuter either, who is a lot more washed up than Estes. I think this might be a point of contention between DePo and Tracy. And as I said a couple days ago, I think it could cost Tracy in the long run. Now, I don't mind platoons, and I don't mind getting Perez and Saenz into some games, but if Tracy is going to take a hard line that Choi doesn't start against LH pitchers, there's gonna be trouble. With a capital "T" and that rhymes with "C" and that stands for "Choi." Sorry. Channeling Vinnie. He made a "Music Man" reference during the Freeway Series....

B Doug,

After watching seemingly countless ex-Dodgers, from Jeff Leonard to Candy Maldonado to Orel Hershiser to Tom Goodwin, have success against LA for SF over the years, it's nice to experience the same thing.

Also, I can never forget Kent's hands around Barry's throat in the dugout years back. He was meant to play for this team.

62.   GoBears
Re: #51: I'm having the same problem. His defense has really impressed me the last couple nights, and of course he can hit. But despite the fact that he and I were at CAL at the same time, I've never liked him.

Part of it is that I have the problem of blaming the player when he's overrated. Kent, esp. during his MVP year, has long been overrated. Kinda like Jeter. Both very good players, but not as good as the hype, so I resent it. When Kent won that MVP, and didn't seem ashamed of it (despite not being the best player on his own team), resentment turned to hate. Totally irrational, I know. But that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

You also forgot ex-Dodger Dusty Baker when he managing all those teams. Does anyone know what the Dodger did to Dusty to make him dislike the Dodgers so much? I remember reading an article and he alluded to some incident which caused him to dislike the Dodgers after he left LA.

It is true you have to give Kent points for actually standing up to Bonds unlike the rest of the Giants, including their management. It just still seems so wierd seeing him in a Dodger uniform.

For all those worried about Drew, just remember that he has been a consistent performed in his career and he will get his averages in BA, HR, and RBI so we are due for good production from him.

Well, my son is heartbroken as Shawn Green remains his favorite player and thus the Diamondbacks are his new favorite team.

We were Team Lazarus today, folks. Great, great win.

Yeah, we haven't seen a high level of play from the NL West thus far but, on the whole, I think the division is better and will be better...

Anyway, great win. Way to go Blue!

It looks like Shawn Green is just as effective as he was last year. Great win tonight, and Valentin is now on pace to only make 121.5 errors this season.

I think we've seen a high level of play from our team--the defense and (injury-ravaged) bullpen haven't been very good but our offense and starting pitching looks tremendous

Schmoll gets the win. I feel bad for Elmer. He pitched much better than I expected. I wish Counsel had gotten up one more time. His batting stance always gives me a chuckle.

SB, My daughter is in the same boat. Her 11th birthday is this week and at her request we are going to Sat and Sun games at the BOB. We are rooting for a few Green HRs and a Dodger win. Never been to the BOB-looking forward to it.

(snippet from my post at choicentral)

Hee-Seop is in hot soup.

The Dodgers had a great win but who led off the inning? Saenz. Against a righthanded closer. Now I grant you he hit a homer in his previous AB but let's turn the tables. Let's say Choi starts the game against a righty, goes one for three like Saenz and his last AB was a dong. Ninth inning, lefthanded closer on the hill... you think Choi bats? He does not.

Tonight was a great win for the Dodgers. It was, I fear, an ominous night for Hee-Seop Choi unless he starts playing real well, real soon.

I think our defense has been pretty good over-all. Kent has been solid. Tonight Saenz made a couple of real good plays to his left. I had no idea he could move so quick. Drew's bat is afraid but he's got a heck of an arm.

I agree, SB. But a game like this, with Saenz coming thru and Valentin making Tracy look like a genius also means that Choi won't get the CHANCE to play well. Hard to do that from the bench. Hey, the platoon worked. Too bad for Choi, tho.

Odd choices by Tracy tonight... letting Wunsch hit for himself and the order he used the bullpen guys in confused me a little.

Yes we're 4 games into the season and he's only had 8 ABs, but the Valentin signing is looking better every game...

Is it just me or has Izzy's defense been a little subpar to start the year? I can't really put my finger on anything in particular - it just doesn't feel like he's playing as well in the field as last year. Thoughts?

The baseball Gods are watching out for us. First a come from behind win like that and then the Rocks down 6-0 come back and get 8 runs off the Giant bullpen. Boy their pen looks weak (except closer). Love to see them demoralized like that. Better hurry back Barry.

Vinnie commented that Cesar put on some weight in the upper body - presumably by lifting weights. Maybe it has slowed him down a smidge. But he looked good on the unassisted DP, and on that short-hop when he crossed in front of 2nd base to make the play.

That's a kinda narrow view of things, LAT. Valentin is way more than even. Last night, JV was 0-0 with 2 RBI and a run scored, and on base 4 times. They won 6-0, so maybe they didn't need that contribution, but by the same token, his 2 RBI tonight weren't any more important than, say, Saenz's. And his error in Game 1 would not have mattered any more than his error last night, if only his teammates had put more runs on the board.

Forgive me if the above missed any irony with which your post was intended. I figured I'd react anyway, just in case Plashke is watching.

Valentin will make some more mistakes this season, fail to come through in some big moments. And he'll have many more big hits, be the hero in many games. He'll hit some more home runs. He'll let a ball or two go between his legs. He'll strike out with the bases loaded. He'll draw a walk to start a seventh inning rally. He'll make a game-saving defensive gem. He'll likely do all of these. For now, he's doing some nice things. If that stops, they'll make a change.

Long season.

I'll just appreciate today's game, thank you. A classic.

As for clubhouse chemistry, Tracy's done a wonderful job managing the disparate personalities and building one solid fighting unit. Winning has nothing to do with it. Uh-huh....sure...

I'm off the wagon. But I note that Nakamura is batting 1.000 in AAA Las Vegas.

We need to have Gagne back and maybe scale back to 11 pitchers.

I agree 100%, though with all the usual caveats about sample size and trusting your eyes. Izturis has looked a step slow in the field and has made several routine plays look awkward. Hopefully it's just a bad stretch.

He does look much bigger than last year. In general, bulking up harms your defense. Still, I'm keeping an open mind on Izzy... jury is still very much out.

No need to get of the Nak Wagon. Hopefully he continues to bat 1.000 in Vegas, and he comes up when there is an opportunity. People may question the decision to have him start the season at AAA, but how nice is it to have the option to bring him up if we need help or an injury-replacement at first or third? He'll get his shot.

Wow. My simulations actually had the game at 8.123 to 6.897 but I rounded to 8-7 (that's a joke, but the only thought was: integrating 2 kinda poor (on average) starting pitchers + 2 pretty good offenses= lots of runs). Since I'm a Dodger fan, the Dodgers win.

WRT the NCAA: Here in the Triangle (UNC, Duke, and NC State, with Wake Forest pretty close by) we take our NCAA bball VERY seriously. I watch a lot of ACC but not much other bball (still no cable/dish). UNC without a doubt had the most 1st round NBA players (the key to my "system") and I saw enough of them to know that coach Roy had the chops to get it done. Illinois, in my opinion, just didn't have the talent, but they certainly had "heart and soul". We saw who won...and, in some ways it is analagous to Depo's approach. Use available resourses to get the talent and coaching, wins will happen, and enough "heart" and "chemistry" will develop. In spite of McCants, that is exactly what happened with the Heels this year.

I should say that one year my wife started filling out a NCAA bracket and assumed that the higher number seed meant the team was better. I told her part way through that, no , a #1 seed is better than #16, etc. But she was the only one to correctly pick a #15 beating a #2 that year, and briefly led the pool. I've never heard the end of it.

Valentin is still learning the position so I think we can expect him to improve there. Of course, errors happen. Glaus is an all-star third baseman and his boot lost the game for the D'backs.
