Jon, I know I'm not a regular, but as a fellow Toaster I was intrigued and thought I'd add my two cents:

1. Where the game is never over
2. Bleeding blogger blue
3. A Dodger blog with mustard

Too bad #1 isn't Dodger-centric, it makes me want to steal it.

Thanks for voting, Cliff (and everyone so far). I think "where the game is never over" is intended to be slightly Dodger-centric on one level, a play on Game Over/Eric Gagne. Perhaps its creator can testify. Anyway, we'll see what happens ...

The list is "okay" but not awesome. I think you should keep the nominations open for a few days. The ideas will get better as these guys have time to think about (and sleep on) it. Is there a reason to hurry?

If you wanted something from the Gibson call you could do: "Dodger Thoughts: All year long, it answers the demands."
2005-05-19 16:19:11
74.   Jon Weisman
"In a year that has been so improbable, Dodger Thoughts has happened"? I don't know...

I don't know if "If you have a computer...throw it to the sky" works. Love the idea, but it seems clunky to me. (I think I keep waiting for the computer to fall back down and crash on my head.) On the other hand, it obviously has great design potential.

2005-05-19 16:21:06
75.   db1022
#70 - nice catch. Out of practice, since everytime that homer is replayed on non-Dodger entities, they seem to always use Jack Buck's call.
2005-05-19 16:25:00
76.   db1022
Adding to that Vin call on Gibson's homer. Is that a beautifully crafted line or what? Obviously completely spur of the moment too.

I read that Al Michaels had thought of the "Miracle" line the night before the '80 game against the Russians. Kind of took the luster off that one, and makes Vin's line that much more genius.

2005-05-19 16:30:19

I have, in my humble possession, a tape of Don Drysdale's call of the Gibson HR on 790AM. Knowing how monotone his play-by-play was, his call will absolutely floor you. "There's a fly ball to right field... WAY BACK... THIS BALL... IS GOOOOOONE!!!"

Can anyone get a wav file from a cassette?

2005-05-19 16:35:45

bigcpa, I've looked into that a little, and all options are fairly expensive. I tossed about 40 reel-to-reel tapes because I couldn't see an easy way to transfer them. I still have about 350 vinyl albums I'd like to convert, though.

That said, here's one site which tells how.

A favorite Scully quote of mine goes something like "And if he didn't get that out he'd be up to his waist in crocodiles..." I don't think it's totally correct but you get the idea.

I'm really just a lurker, but I love the site regardless, hope you don't mind my votes.

Also, I'd tried to think of something clever, but I really couldn't. The only thing I could think of was "The Ron Coomer of Baseball Blogs." But I mean it in a good way!

I guess there is no dispute about whether we are a red site or a blue site. Jon, notice how I co-opted the site with that reference to "we."

My vote:

1. Where the game is never over. (even though he's done as the closer I would use "ghame". Hey, it got the site ink in the Times.)

2. Write In: from Smirk: "0 Runs, 300 Hits, 0 Errors" (although I would raise the hits to 500 or 600.

Clearly, it's a modified Borda count (points system).

Sorry to hear all that poli sci is still infecting your brain. Probably my fault, or the fault of "friends of mine" (cue the Sopranos theme....)

My favorite Vin is:

"Duces wild. Two on. Two out. Two Strikes. Two Balls."

My least favorite baseball call of all time is Chris Berman with his ridiculous "Back, Back, Back, Back, Back, Back." Could he be less original and more annoying? Someone needs to tell him that fat and loud doesn't make you good.

What was the exact phrasing that Vin used for Finley's slam in Game 161?

Franklin set, Wayne ready and deals.
Swung on, a high fly ball to deep right field.
Wherever it goes, the Dodgers have won!
And it's a grand slam home run!
...
What a finish! as Steve Finley hits it into the seats in right field,
and the Dodgers come up and roll a 7 in the bottom of the 9th inning & beat the Giants, 7 to 3.
...
And in all the storied history and glory, frustrations and heartbreak
that both of these teams have inflicted upon the other, this one had to be a killer.

Thank you!

I was actually listening to that game instead of watching since I was at a UCLA football game.

Probably the greatest single day in Southern California baseball when you realize that both the Dodgers and Angels clinched their divisions by beating their rivals from the Bay Area in come from behind fashion, although the Dodgers win was a lot more dramatic.

I even remember watching some of the football game. UCLA beat San Diego State.

It wasn't televised in this part of the country anyway.

Why would anyone in New York care about an exciting pennant race coming down to the end of the season?

Enjoyed the phone interview with Tommy Lasorda on 710AM on the drive home today. They were giving Lasorda a hard time about the Anaheim vs Los Angeles name change for the Angels. Then Lasorda said something great. (Paraphrasing now) He said that the name Dodgers was synonymous with baseball. He said if someone told you they were a Padre, you'd think they were a priest. If someone told you they were a twin, you'd ask them where their brother was. If someone told you they were an Angel, you'd tell them all the Angels are in heaven, and they're all Dodgers.

He shut the smart ass radio host up right away. Not easy to match wits with Tommy!

87 -- ha ha, pretty good.
103 -- thank you thank you for tracking that down. I listened on the radio to that one with my wife and son on a beautiful early fall afternoon, sitting around our kitchen wih the back door wide open, hot dogs grilling outside, ice cold Rolling Rock (went to college in PA, can't help it), and it all ended with the three of us jumping up and down and singing the National Anthem (3 year olds are funny that way). smile.

Im So Blue--Thanks for Vin's call. Minor correction for the folks at Dodger Dugout broadcast...game was 10/2/04.

I know the game was on 10/2, but the KCOP-TV Dodger Dugout broadcast was the 10/3 pregame show (the day after). In that program, they replayed bits from the previous day, using Vin's radio call. I had DVRed the program and replayed it.

Someone with MLB Gameday Audio could listen to the actual radio call to see if I missed anything.
