My Cupholder Runneth Over
2006-04-05 17:08
by Jon Weisman

Something I forgot to mention from Opening Day: The enormous bottle of bottled water the Dodgers force you to buy (if you want to buy water, that is) does not fit in the newly installed seat cupholders. That's the case, at least, on the Loge Level.

I'm not complaining about the cupholder - I just wish they sold two sizes of water.

Tonight's Game

Tonight's Weather

* * *

Update: The Sandy Alomar, Jr. Personal Catcher (TM) is not working as advertised - Alomar's 2 for 2 performance notwithstanding. Odalis Perez apparently had some technical difficulties with it.

Update 2: I'll have the right side of the menu, please. Second baseman Jeff Kent and first baseman Olmedo Saenz left the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after each grimaced on awkward plays in the top of the fourth.

Update 3: Vin says that Kent has a bruised tricep from being hit by a pitch, and Saenz has a troubled back from a collision on an infielder roller with Alomar. They are listed as day to day. Translation: "IT'S A COOKBOOK!!!"

Update 4: Dodger Thoughts reader Gold Star for Robot Boy passed along the news that the Dodgers released Dave Roberts tradee Henri Stanley, according to Baseball America.

I'll be in the RF pavilion thanks to coachjpark.

I'll be the guy in the Team South Africa cap. I hope that those colors don't start a ruckus.

If there's a home run to right field tonight, the DT crowd needs to distinguish itself somehow.

You gotta be real, real thirsty to buy water at the Stadium. How much is that setting you back? You can bring it from home as long as the seal isn't broken.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can find hot chocolate or coffee with a seal on it. That weather for this evening not-looka-so-good.

Its not just the water, Bob. Have you been outside this afternoon? There's some Chicago-style wind out there.

Layers, my friend.

I've been outside today in Downtown. It's not that bad.

I'm going home for another layer too.

I'm not getting out my November prep football game in the High Desert gear yet. Nothing is more fun than a nice brisk night at Edwards AFB in the rain.

Jeff Weaver has thrown 90 pitches, given up 4 runs in 6 innings, and the Angels bring him out for the 7th in a 4-2 game because ... ?

The only thing I can fill in to make sense is: because the Angels want his arm to fall off by the All-Star break so they can bring up his brother Jered.

Sadly, I left behind my ski mask at my brother's home in Michigan. I bought that before I headed up to Edwards AFB. I went to a Sports Chalet and bought one. I paid cash. I told the clerk I didn't want the receipt and I didn't need a bag for it.

I guess I don't look like a criminal.

Bannister loses his magic touch in NY. He had a no hitter going through five. Now he's allowed a double, a HBP (his second), and an HR to Nick Johnson. He'd better hope he gets pulled soon; if he bats again he's going to get hit in the head, with all the chin music he's playing.

I bring a pre-chilled 24oz. Arrowhead sport bottle which fits nicely in the new cupholders. As I discovered last May, at Petco they have a 20oz. limit on bottled water with an exception for pregnant women.

Thumbs up to the new section numbering system, at least on the Loge level. Should help cut down on the aimless wandering. They eliminated the B,B,D,D row numbering as well. For some reason there is no row Q. Is this another 1962 throwback?

Here's what I wrote on the other thread:
"It seems to me that the Nationals no longer want Ryan Church around, ever since he suffered the toe injury last year. Why don't the Nationals just trade him?
-- Vince, A, Denver

I think the Nationals want Church to be part of the organization. In fact, Church's No. 1 fan is general manager Jim Bowden. However, many in the organization have heard enough of Church's excuses, especially when it comes to his body.

For example, Church said he was run down during Spring Training. People in the organization were stunned when they found out about that particular statement. The organization is hoping that Church will get mentally tougher in the Minor Leagues.

I also don't see the Nationals trading Church unless they get something phenomenal in return."

Sounds like JD Drew...we'll take him.

How do these trades sound
Izturis (all star, gold glover) and Tomko for Livan Hernandez and Ryan Church
Izturis for Scott Baker or Jason Kubel

Any other ideas?

21- I guess you really like my Repko/Mays comparison form a while ago. Here are a few more:
OBP/SLG
Repko- .281/.384 8 HR 5 steals
Edmonds- .270/.344
Hunter- .309/.380 9 HR 10 steals
A. Jones- .265/.443 5 HR
Damon- .313/.368 6 HR
Ty Cobb (yes Ty Cobb!) .288/.300 1 HR 2 steals
Tris Speaker .262/.276 3 steals
Duke Snider .297/.450 5 HR 4 steals
Max Carey (at 24, the same age as Repko was last year) .313/.347 1 HR

All the players on the list were either all stars or are in the hall fame, except Repko (not yet).

Anybody notice pseudo-old friend Brian Meadows put up this load today?

1 2/3 IP, 8 H, 1 BB, 8 ER, 0 K

2006-04-05 18:46:48
30.   Uncle Miltie
28- in terms of raw statistics, probably not (this year), but Repko's leadership would bridge the gap. And with the help of Kenny Lofton, Repko will eventually become a CL (Championship Leader).

If Kent had been been benched I wonder what the outcome of tonights game would have been. Would he have gotten those key base hts Ramon failed to? Would he have snuffed that ball Ramon put out of its misery?

These and many more questions will be answered in a zone I like to call the night night zone.

If he really said that, then by all means FGL. If he thinks it is 1995, then he is not of much use to anybody.

Today's game is a good example of why a long reliever makes your bullpen better.
And by the way, why didn't grady use seo today?
But anyways getting back to my point, if billingsley can get it together, we can move the worst of the 2 of tomko or perez to the pen as a long reliever, and if they complain then you know you have a selfish player on your hands.

Anhyone know who's expected to start tomorrow? Billingsley, Orenduff, Elbert, and Leach? Looks like our top starting pitching prospects could be out in full force

Whats most demoralizing is that Odalis Perez is probably the Dodgers #2 starter.

Kent should be ok as long as that pitch didnt break any bones.

Saenz tweaked his back. He's old. That will happen. Loney should be playing everyday up here anyways.

Furcal's injury looked pretty bad though. If its serious, bring the Destroyer up and let him play SS.

38 hits
32 singles
1 home run

How long can the team keep scoring runs through hitting singles? Not sure.

if they keep getting on base, they will keep scoring runs. OBP is the best correlation for runs scored.

Tomko vs Jimmy Rollins on Friday.

so? wouldnt you be more worried if we didnt score any runs off those nobody pitchers?

i really cant see how anyone can be dissapointed with the offensive output for the dodgers in this series. if our starters were halfway decent, we would have had a sweep.

I don't think you can see too many trends after 3 games, but something that is very important that can be garnered after 3 games, is what happens if Jeff Kent gets injured or just needs a day off. The power/rbi production really goes down. With no power hitting infielder other than Kent, I am not expecting that much pop from Nomar when he returns-the Dodgers, I think will have to find their pop in the outfield and Guzman or Either seem to be the best candidates, unless LaRoche is ready sooner. On those days hopefully we can move Mueller to second. Ironically this dilema was what the Giants faced with Snow at First and Mueller at 3rd-no power except Kent and of course Bonds.

Right.
But i'm just saying that it wasn't as tho we were up against 3 solid starters(only 2) and a solid bullpen (braves bullpen sucks, excuse my language).

Just got back... thanks to DT posters that made it out to the game, including Mr. Bob Timmermann, who was, indeed, wearing his South Africa baseball cap. Bob informed me that the outing to the game was his first in the RF pavilion since 1978...

As for the game itself, the big mistake was not putting the team in position to get Gagne in the game. I called Dodger Talk and said that we should have had Baez out there in the 8th inning with an 8-8 tie, and then throw Gagne out there in the 9th inning with a one-run lead or even in a tie ballgame, especially with the day off tomorrow. It just doesn't make sense to not have your best relief pitcher out there with the game on the line. The same can be said with Torre's Yankees yesterday and his leaving Scott Procter to lose the game rather than Rivera....

Nonetheless, it was a successful outing for me personally. I would say a good 70-80% of my 1000 tickets actually went to use and hopefully I can make this an annual Dodger outing for my clients/prospective clients.... and Dodger Thoughts readers. My Elijah prayers for no rain apparently were heard by the Big Dodger in the Sky.

Wazzup everybody? Sorry in advance for the hit-and-run post but I was all set to watch 6 ballgames Monday afternoon, this girl I know called, and yadda yadda yadda I have 2000+ comments to catch up on now! :)

Steve et al: I hope you are all thrilled you'll get to see your favorite SS in person! Only 18 more games to catch Joe D...

To all the "Lost" watchers (and I'll try not to give anything away here): have any of you read "Pale Fire" by Nabokov? I strongly suspect whoever wrote tonight's episode is very familiar with that book. If anyone is interested:

http://www.libraries.psu.edu/nabokov/wpale.htm

I'll catch up with everything I've missed here this weekend sometime, just wanted to check in and say hey, and I love these new Dodgers; they look like the 2003 Red Sox offense combined with the 2005 Dodger pitching!

Peace,

433- He didn't play in the first game, but didn't rescind his appeal till after it was over. So, he wasn't eligible for tonight, either. Anyway, there was plenty of bad news tonight without getting our first official look at what Gagne is, post injury.
