Putting Lofton's Role in Perspective
2006-04-17 14:11
by Jon Weisman

I would suggest that the following was true before the season began:

1a) Kenny Lofton was not a viable full-time center fielder for 2006.
1b) The Dodgers made it clear from the start that they didn't expect Lofton to play more than 110 games. They knew he would be at best a rather glorified role player disguised as nominal starter.

2a) Lofton's contract of well over $3 million per year is out of proportion to his talents.
2b) His contract does not appear to have forestalled any other attempts to improve the outfield. General manager Ned Colletti has always been interested in strengthening the outfield, if for no other reason than to improve upon Jose Cruz, Jr. There is no indication that the reason he hasn't is because a budget limit has been reached.

3a) The idea that Lofton would help the team from a chemistry perspective was ludicrous.
3b) The fact that he won't help the team from a chemistry perspective is not a strike against him.

4a) Lofton doesn't have much power.
4b) He is a guy who can get on base against right-handed pitching and an efficient basestealer.

5a) Lofton will not carry your team to a division title.
5b) He does have the talent to be useful on a pennant-contending ballclub.

Despite the strong outfield play the Dodgers saw in Los Angeles and Las Vegas while Lofton started the season on the disabled list, I'm not ready to believe that Jason Repko, Cody Ross, Joel Guzman or Andre Ethier is ready to take over an outfield position full-time. Sure, I'd rather see Lofton as a true bench player than as a questionable starter, but there's no reason to think that Lofton can't contribute to the team until a five-star outfield candidate emerges, and no reason to react in anger if his name is in the starting lineup against a right-handed pitcher at this stage.

This is not a prediction that Lofton will stay healthy - far from it. It's a suggestion that while Lofton is healthy, however briefly, that he still has value as a tablesetter. Whether or not Lofton was worth acquiring, he is worth using once acquired. The fact that the Dodgers will eventually do better than Lofton does not mean Lofton can't help the team in the short term.

Jon:
You should know that there is no room here for any reasonable or objective viewpoint on something like Kenny Lofton. You should just continue your Easter Weekend hibernation and leave the analysis to someone else.

I like Lofton just fine as a part-timer. Who knows, he might develop into a good pinch-hitter when he's not starting. Didn't Davalillo do that?

Lofton's biggest minus is his spot in the lineup. I've never been a fan of batting two weak hitters in the 1/2 spots.

I brought this up in the other thread, but since were talking on this one now...

Some here are made the following observations:

#1. Jeff Kent has lost a step defensively at 2nd base.
#2. James Loney is not ready for MLB pitching.
#3. Willy Aybar is destroying AAA, after a great last month in the MLB last year.

Question:

Would it be best for the team (while Nomar is hurt or if he's going to be hurt), to move Kent to 1st base and play Aybar at 2nd?

I think there's a very strong possibility Aybar can outproduce Loney at this point.

It just seems Aybar and even Joel Guzman should be on the MLB club ahead of James Loney.

2006-04-17 15:25:37
11.   Jon Weisman
10 - Interesting question, though almost moot. When Garciaparra is activated, Loney goes down.

However, I've got no problem with Aybar over Martinez, except for the potential problem of backing up Furcal at short (assuming Garciaparra can't).

2006-04-17 15:27:53
12.   natepurcell
do the dodgers believe aybar can play 2b effectively? I dont know if they believe that.
2006-04-17 15:30:46
13.   sanchez101
11. I dont think the front office thinks of Loney ready for MLB pitching. He's only here because Nomar isnt. I agree in regards to Guzman and Aybar, although I think Guzman should spend as much time in AAA as possible, for the sake of his own development as he's only 21 years old. I wish they would give Aybar more of a chance at 2nd, but Im not sure Colletti has even considered it. (even though aybar played a good second base for Jacksonville in 2004)

Part of me is ready for the Dodgers to just go with the young talent right now, if just to get it over with. At the rate injuries are hitting, that might happen any way.

Aybar is not a blue-chip guy that needs to get his ab's everyday in AAA anyway. He should be here immediately playing the hit-first Antonio Perez role. Unfortunately like Carter, Ramon Martinez is not a guy you just can just waive. Something tells me they're both here for the season.
2006-04-17 15:40:52

I should add that Aybar sits behind Ramon Martinez and Izturis on the depth chart. One wonders what they'll do if he's hitting .325/.425/.475 into June.

It will be interesting to watch how the Devil Rays, D-Backs and Dodgers handle their prospects this year. Of the three, the Dodgers would appear the one team that is supposed to be a contender, thus a more cautious approach would appear to be the way they are going to handle it.

The D-Backs have started toi bring up their prospects and while some may want to see Drew and Upton, neither has even half a full season in professional ball so it would be doubtful that they would bring them up.

And the Devil Rays, we will have to see if they make any moves to free up some space for their players, I think Upton is out of options after this year so something has to be decided, saw a note where he already has 7 errors at shortstop, all on throws. He like Soriano and even Guzman recognize the value of their bat in a middle infield position but unless you can play a decent second or short, a major league club can't afford mediocre defense, especially at shortstop.

The Angels probably belong in this discussion too but their moves are predicated by getting rid of their current middle infielders and Erstad, so we probably won't see Howie and the rest until 2007.

If thats the case, one has to wonder what the Dodgers are evaluating their players on. I'm hoping they have Aybar at AAA bc they want him playing everyday. If its bc they think he has no future and that Ramon Martinez actually is better, something is terribly wrong.

what the dodgers need, not necessarily now, but sometime in the near future, is a young clean up style hitter to build a team/lineup around. If we can acquire that or one of our young players assume that role, it would be alot easier to set the rest of our lineup. With our plethora of prospects that project to be solid mlb players but not superstars, it would be easy to build around that young superstar/clean up hitter.

21 I'm sure Ned realizes that Aybar "should" outperform Ramon Martinez- he's just not willing to find out now. As weak as that is, it's even worse that Ned likely relied on 50 ab's in March to decide this and Martinez was a whopping 4 singles better.

25.   natepurcell
also on another note, i think chin lung hu is the most underrated dodger prospect. A lot of dodger fans seem to just dismiss his worth and ability. 300 hitting gold glove shortstops are pretty rare and he will be a valuable asset to a big league team.

I feel like I opened the flood gates on Lofton complaining last week during the Cody Ross game. That said, I don't think I feel that differently from Jon on the situation. He's not a completely useless player. He's possibly even a better option for this year in CF than anyone else currently in the organization.

The problem with the Lofton signing is the money combined with his veteran-ness. Its not the money in the sense that his millions (4 of them) brought the team to its budget limits. Its the money (and his veteran-ness) in the sense that he's been annointed. We're stuck with him even if the better option comes a-knocking down our door.

Say Ethier just destroys AAA pitching, or Repko or Ross keep swinging the hot bat. Are any of them going to start in centerfield as long as Kenny Lofton is around? Is Lofton even tradable? I remember the Yankees tried to limit his role 2 years ago, and it was a disaster.

Pujols hit his 4th homer in 2 days to tie for the lead with Shelton, who had hit one earlier in the day. They are both on pace for roughly 112 homers after hitting 9 homers in 13 games. Adam Dunn just went deep as well, for a total of 8 homers on the year

I was thinking more along the lines of a "Loftorie"

2006-04-17 16:32:52

Well, maybe Lofton's fire-lighting was not so much intended (whether rationally or not) to improve Drew's performance, but rather to get him on the field consistently.

4 - Steve and John are both big fans of Ned (They'll probably give kudos to Ned for acquiring Baez), note that they wanted Bowden back when DePo was let go in October.

23. I agree, the only problem is that there doesnt seem to be any premier hitters on the free agent market the next two years. I really hope that eventually Miguel Cabrera is installed at third base for the blue crue.

25. I agree in regards to Hu. The joke possibilites alone make him exciting. My guess is that he spends a year+ at AA, about a year at AAA, and then apprenticing with Furcal in the last year of Raffy's contract. It's a pipe dream, but I hope he can keep up the walk rate he's shown so far this season.

1 Far be it for ESPN to employ someone who's intelligent, sensible and well-spoken. Which, of course, explains the continuing presence of Steve Phillips....

But does NOT explain what Orel Hershiser is doing on Baseball Tonight. I caught a bit of it yesterday, and he seemed so... out of place....

How about this for a trade the Dodgers should make: Monday and Lyons to ESPN for Hershiser. A lopsided deal in the Dodgers' favor, but it would suit the character of both teams well.

I've never been a Lofton fan and don't like him on my team. Sort of the way some people think about Kent on the team after years of hatred. I've always heard he was a clubhouse cancer, his alleged motivational skills notwithstanding.

He's possibly even a better option for this year in CF than anyone else currently in the organization.

What about Drew? He can play there, and wants to play there. Since Cruz is comfortable in either corner spot that would have left us in need of one corner outfielder. I just feel like we could have gotten a Reggie Sanders, or someone like that who would outproduce Lofton and give us that bat in the middle that we need.

Just can't understand why we spent what we did on Lofton when Drew could have done the job fine...and the money to Lofton could have gone to another corner outfielder that will have better all around numbers...

Maybe Jeff Weaver can't pitch for AL contenders.

41 - The key to those trades was the fact that both the Marlins and the Pirates did not want to pay Lee and Ramirez and they were willing to trade them for prospects, albeit not great ones as none of them are no longer in Florida's plans. In fact the only player that had any value was Hee Sop Choi who of course helped them get LoDuca and Mota who they then used (after signing them to multi-million contracts) in last off season's trades with the Red Sox and the Mets.

It does appear that the dumping salary type trades (unless the other team is Florida) is not something that is being done much these days so for the Dodgers to acquire someone like Lee or Ramirez, a combination of prospects and taking on some significant salary may be what it takes to get someone to fill the middle of the lineup.

FYI for those wondering in what baseball transaction limbo Cody Ross has now entered into (thanks to Rob Neyer of ESPN.com)"...a player is designated for assignment so the club can open up his roster spot while they're waiting for him to clear waivers, which can take four or five days. Occasionally, a club will designate a player for assignment while they're trying to trade him." I don't think if a team claims Ross, the Dodgers can pull him back but if there is a team higher up on the claim list that really wants him, I guess the Dodgers could trade him if that team did not want to risk not getting him through waivers.

im getting gameday, and i guess im lucky because im getting some audio from milb.com. right now Billingsley is in the 2nd, got daric barton to ground out after 6-7 pitches, now jeremy brown is making him work, after 7 pitches 2-3. Double.

Can you please post a link to gameday.

I think at this point Jeremy Brown might be a bigger offensive threat than Jason Kendall. I'm not sure how good of defensive catcher Brown is, but I'd rather see him in Oakland than Kendall or Melhuse.

John Kruk was funny and occasionally said insightful things ("I'm not out there for my glove") while a player.

The surprise is that, as a broadcaster, he not only never has anything interesting to say, he's lost all his charisma. Nevertheless, its that reputation from his playing days that keeps him employed.

billingsley k's the last two batters to end the inning with brown on 2nd. apparently his fastball is cruising along at 92-93.

A's Nation thinks Suzuki is currently their top catching prospect (.556 OBP as of Sunday). I haven't heard much about Brown lately. Made for a cool character though in the book.

Oh, and to add to my own post 85, it is something of a shock that ESPN picked up Kruk despite all his shortcomings having been on full display at Fox.

82 Just browsed the minor league scoreboards, to see how ex-Dodger Choi was doing. Then I noticed that Hideo Nomo is pitching for Charlotte, and he got pulled after walking Choi. Why doesn't Nomo quit?

49 Definitely. I think I'd probably prefer giving Orel a shot at a management position. But since that didn't quite happen during this off-season, I figure broadcasting is the next-best thing....

Melhuse doesnt really have much upside. Didnt the Dodgers have him at one time?

Thats true the A's have been hyping Suzuki for a long time, but Jeremy Brown has had a few good years lately so I hope they give him a shot.

94 Not a good game for him. Two Ks and a BB. He had a HR in his first AAA start. Overall, batting .308, but only .200 against right handed pitching. OPS of 1.009.

Of course only 13 ABs. :-)

I just got an e-mail from a non-Dodger fan friend who lives in Las Vegas. It said something like "I went to the game last night, and the Dodgers have some guy named Guzman who will swing at any crap the pitcher throws no matter how many bounces it takes to get to the plate. Ever heard of him?"

Didnt your friend get the memo?

The Dodgers arent doing that "Oakland thing" anymore.

Poor Daniel Cabrera wipes out the Angels, and then has to watch LaTroy Hawkins try to hold on.

The comments in 101 are like something that commenter Bluetahoe would say in Bizarro world.

Or, perhaps it reflects another of the closet Oldbear attackers.

Either way, despite the parts I agree with, it reflects a complete misunderstanding of this audience - grand generalizations and inappropriate language presented as major revelations.

I don't want to make bad assumptions, but something about this post made me uncomfortable.

you have to pay $9.99 for the realtime stat-tracker. the first couple of weeks were just for demo purposes.

104. I believe thats a copy and paste job from some of MB31's threads at the dodgers site. In fact, its almost word for word. I'm not sure why anyone would think they could plagerize someone else's words, since its apparent most of us are Dodgers fans here and check out other Dodger boards.

I'll admit, these blog comment maneuvers are just way over my head. I don't even get them.

Meanwhile, in NY, Duaner comes in to relieve Pedro and gets a big K of Marcus Giles to end the top of the 7th w/a runner at second in a 4-3 game (Mets up). The runner was only at second because he stole it off the Duaner/LoDuca battery.

Wow. This Ross for Robles swap is unbelievable, unless there's a trade in the works (and probably, even then). Colletti really does seem to make the worst choice possible every chance he gets. Most of these decisions have been of minor importance, but they do not bode well for the bigger decisions down the line. Lofton over any decent corner OFer with power, Repko over Ross, Robles over Aybar, Loney (at this stage) over Choi. The evidence is really piling up.

The only theme that I see is that he might be consistently choosing the one he perceives as the better defensive player (and maybe the faster player). Most of us would argue that he's wrong on the Ross/Repko defensive comparison, and maybe even on the Robles/Aybar comparison (and certainly on the Alomar Jr./anyone choice). But by reputation alone, he does seem to have chosen perceived defense over offense every time. Remember, he did say that he would emphasize speed and defense. He apparently meant it.

Still, not good when you have the wrong decision rule, and then can't even apply it correctly.

And I've hated Kenny Lofton ever since he played PG for 'Zona. So this is a long-standing thing. But I'll admit that when I see a routine fly ball hit to CF, it's comforting to remember that Lofton is out there instead of Jason "Never a Dull Moment" Repko. It's a small thing, but it keeps the ulcer in check.

I'm probably the most outspoken Aybar backer on this board but am glad he's staying in Triple-A.

I'm also thrilled that tonight he is batting leadoff. That's the spot most conducive to preparing him for the majors. Mini rant: In spring training, Aybar's best game came in the No. 1 spot, but from there Grittle pretty much ignored him. I understand that Grittle had to prepare the 25-man roster. But a smarter franchise would've alternated Willy in the No. 1 spot. The Dodgers and Mr. Pirate, Roy Smith, really don't appreciate or teach Aybar's kind of patient approach that the No. 1 spot accentuates, even develops. As an aside, the Rockies are batting SS prospect Tulowitzki leadoff to improve his plate discipline. Smart!

Back to topic: Aybar is better defensively at 3B, iffy at 2B. I know many people look at his stats and say put him at 2B, because his offensive game fits better there. But the stats don't show his defensive actions, and those actions put Willy at 3B.

Keep Willy at 3B unless Mueller gets hurt. And keep him at leadoff. Robles is a better fit to spell Kent a few games.
