The American League Home Run Leader Is ... Mae West?
2006-04-27 07:32
by Jon Weisman

Actually, it's Jonny Gomes.

2006 salary: $355,800

Gomes has 10 singles and 10 homers this season. Through 528 plate appearances in his career, he has 31 home runs and a .913 OPS.

Jonny's full name is Jonny Johnson Gomes. He was born in San Francisco. He may be carrying the soul of Mae West, who passed away the day of his birth.

My fantasy team thanks Gomes very much. Of course, my fantasy team also has Rafael Furcal, so it all averages out to mediocrity.

And yes, you can blame the Dodgers slow start on me. Every time I end up with Furcal on my team, he stinks up the league horribly until I just can't stand it anymore, and then I cut him. After which, he inevitably immediately gets red-hot.

I'm not planning on cutting him anytime soon, but I suppose I am open to bribes.

I predict that by 2063, people will remember November 22 as the day Jonny Gomes was born, not the day President John Kennedy was assassinated.

2 - Maybe by 11/22/2063, but probably not on 11/22/2063.

On 11/26/2063, I'll be the same age as Grandma Sue.

My roto team also has Jonny "come up and see me sometime ... lately" Gomes, AND the NOT 2004 version of Adrian Beltre.

Sigh ....

3 Wow. It's breathtaking to read such a confident statement that one will be alive 57 years in the future.

I'm like Keynes: "in the long run, we're all dead." By 2063 I expect to be in that condition. ;)

Branch Rickey died the day before I was born. I still believe that his soul transmigrated into my body.
