It Was 40 Years Ago Today ... Dodger Stadium Got the Beatles To Play

by Jon Weisman

Tom Hoffarth of the Daily News revisits the Beatles' penultimate concert, which took place 40 years ago at Dodger Stadium. Good pics and links to be found. (Inside the Dodgers came across this sooner than I did.)

They only had one concert appearance after 1966? Man, I knew they became more of a studio band starting with Revolver, but I didn't realize they just stopped playing altogether.

I didn't even know there was a YouTube video. Very cool even though the quality is lousy.

This was actually the Beatles' third-to-last concert as they played Candlestick the next night and then re-emerged for the famous rooftop concert in January 1969. (I was given a very cool bootleg DVD of that show for Christmas a few years ago.)

This site has the following to say about the Dodger Stadium show:
http://www.beatles-discography.com/1966.html

"28th: The Beatles played a gig to 45,000 at the Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles. Their limo had to turn back after the kids started clambering all over it, and the police had to beat them back with batons. One paper reported: "The Beatles fled to offices under the grandstand as crowds charged the entrance gates. Time and again, police were forced to hit out with their clubs, to keep the fans off the gates. Youths then charged the wooden barricades which had been set up to keep the crowds back. They hurled sticks and bottles at police until they were finally turned away with a shoulder charge by officers who cleared a sort of no-man's land between the crowds and the exit gates. Meanwhile, The Beatles, who were virtually imprisoned beneath the grandstand by fans stampeding from one spot to another, made good their escape by armoured car at the opposite end of the stadium."

9. TV? Nope, not really. Sports, news, kids shows (for my 2 yr old)... not much else worth watching. Movies? Yuck, nothing good coming out of Hollywood these days. Popular music? There are still good music artists out there, just not as many as before but atleast compared to the TV and Movie business popular music already clinched first place in that three team division.

10. Yeah, I come here for my baseball fix, not my emmy, tv chat, movie chat, music chat or tv female fixation chat. I don't mind Bob's cat chat though. :) vr, Xei

dodger power hitting prospect alert!

Josh Bell

19 yrs old in the pioneer league, switch hitter and tried to play 3b but most likely will have to move across the diamond or to left field.

202AB 12hr 21bb 61k 297/364/579

He could be a good breakout pick for next year depending on if he can cut down his k rate. gotta love the power and switch hitting abilities though.

19 Yeah, you don't really hear about this one much. I remember they showed some bootleg footage of the Dodger Stadium show on the news right after the original Anthology airings. I've heard the Candlestick Park show and thought it was pretty good. I'm always amazed at how they were able to play without studio monitors and with all the screaming girls.

As for hearing/seeing what they sounded like without as many screams, there's some pretty good pro-shot footage on youtube from the 1966 tour in Germany. "Nowhere Man" sounded really good from what I remember. And the Budokan shows are on there too (including a full band version of "Yesterday" that I'd never known existed).

Re: 21

That seemed to be original plan, but Gurnick in the most recent Dodgers mailbag indicated the organization is seriously thinking about Kuo starting.

Grady's been pretty flexible in general, so maybe he talked to Colletti about alternatives to Hendrickson, who's been obviously inconsistent. Or perhaps the front office staff decided to really mull the issue over.

If the Marlins didnt have to play the Cards/Mets 10 more times, I'd think they'd have a good chance at the WC.

Inspite of Girardi, their starting pitching still might be good enough to pull them through.

2006-08-28 18:43:06
40.   Wayne Wei-siang Hsieh
The way the pitching schedule works, it strikes me that Kuo starting would be unlikely. With Bills pitching well, I guess the rotation could possibly be the following:

S Bills
M Penny
T Hendrickson
W Maddux
T Off
F Lowe
S Bills
S Kuo
M Penny

I'd be surprised if we moved back Penny's start for Kuo's sake, though. And Bills has just pitched too well as of late, although perhaps there are concerns about his workload. The most sensible thing would be to have Kuo take Hendrickson's place in the rotation, but with the off day, he wouldn't be in line to start this weekend anyhow.

Anyhow, I guess we'll see what happens.

At the Naval Academy, where McCain's son is currently a student, IIRC, all plebes (i.e. freshmen) are prohibited from playing all video games when on the Yard during the academic year. In fact, they may only be allowed to play video games when on leave outside of a 20-some-odd mile radius of campus.

I spent my first year of college at a small, private university in the South that held many of those same rules. The media restrictions weren't quite so severe, but they were implied. The college so thoroughly controlled the small town that it managed to have MTV, VH1, and a couple other "immoral" channels removed from the cable lineup.

What passed for fun? Sneaking out of the dorms after the strict eleven o'clock curfew to hit the nearby Waffle House.

This is, by the way, the same university that thought it was a great idea to encourage their conservative Christian donor base by bringing in the always inspirational Ann Coulter. (They finally caved to public pressure and canceled her appearance.)

197 Penny's velocity is still in the 96 to 98 in his last 2 starts so I don't think his arm is hurt. His control and command is terrible and he's completely relying on his fastball instead of changing speeds more often. It looks like Maddux hasn't had any positive effect on Penny.

208 I must've missed it, what is your complaint with MLB EI? I think they show just about every game with which they have a contractual agreement with the carrier which includes all the Fox networks, YES, NESN (BoSox), etc. Basically, games carried by a local non-cable channel (like KCAL in LA) are not on Extra Innings.

They do black out the local team (or if you are in their blackout area, which sometimes doesn't make sense), but that's because you supposedly can get the game anyway on the local channel.

219- Russ played human sacrifice. The Reds had the Repko between second and first, so Russ distracted them, and actually did it well enough that Repko was going to get to second safely, as he did. But Russ was standing in no man's land watching, instead of getting back to third. Both runners should have been safe. Instead, Russ sacrificed himself, the runner at third, for Repko, who barely made it to second.

That has to be the longest GameDay play recap in GameDay history:
"Jason Repko singles on a ground ball to left fielder Todd Hollandsworth. Russell Martin out at home, left fielder Todd Hollandsworth to third baseman Edwin Encarnacion to second baseman Brandon Phillips to first baseman Scott Hatteberg to catcher David Ross to third baseman Edwin Encarnacion. Jason Repko to 2nd on the throw."

Because I might drive 13 hours from Salt Lake City to Phoenix and buy a ticket to watch the Diamondbacks. Or I might drive 9 hours to Denver. MLB wouldn't want to deprive the Dbacks or Rockies of that potential revenue!

Duh, I realize what Sushirabbit's complaint is now. Are you not getting tonight's Dodger game on EI because it's being blacked out in the Reds "region" which Nashville is considered part of?

That makes no sense unless it's available locally. I always assumed they were trying to protect the local channel that was carrying it in that situation.

I live in San Diego so any Padre game on EI is blacked out, I can watch the local channel carrying it (there is an issue if the local channel isn't carrying it).

The key to remembering the presidents in order is to remember a few presidents as "anchors" and then you can add or subtract from there.

Garfield
McKinley

Millard Fillmore signed the Compromise of 1850 which put off the Civil War for 11 years.

And he sent Commodore Matthew Peary to Japan to go tell the Japanese that they should be friendlier.

Of course by the time Peary got to Japan, Franklin Pierce was president.

Franklin Pierce was a bad president and is the subject of little or no historical interest from academics. When CSPAN did their "American Presidents" series spot for Pierce, their "expert" was a guy who wrote celebrity biographies mainly.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a buddy of Franklin Pierce.

Hatteburg with another Anti-Moneyball at bat.

Hatteburg's last two at bats of this game are examples of why he no longer plays for the A's.

388. The moneyball approach doesnt include swining at pitches in the dirt, or hacking when losing in the late innings.

I was just saying that those two at bats by Hatteburg, are things he normally wouldnt do in the past, and are reasons why he no longer plays for Oakland.

Hatteberg doesn't play for the A's because he's like a million years old and he stank last year. Also, they've got 1Bs falling out of their pockets when they sit down too fast.

There's also no such thing as a Moneyball at bat, so, transitively, there's no such thing as an anti-Moneyball one.

Hatteberg doesn't play for the A's anymore because they had Dan Johnson, who was younger, and comparable offensively. I think if Oakland knew that Johnson would struggle so much this year, they might have kept Hatteberg.

430 -- What, and where, were the first two pitches to Phillips? Phillips has to feel extremely humiliated taking three called strikes without any balls, especially in the situation he was in.
