Tom Hoffarth of the Daily News revisits the Beatles' penultimate concert, which took place 40 years ago at Dodger Stadium. Good pics and links to be found. (Inside the Dodgers came across this sooner than I did.)
* * *
This was actually the Beatles' third-to-last concert as they played Candlestick the next night and then re-emerged for the famous rooftop concert in January 1969. (I was given a very cool bootleg DVD of that show for Christmas a few years ago.)
This site has the following to say about the Dodger Stadium show:
http://www.beatles-discography.com/1966.html
"28th: The Beatles played a gig to 45,000 at the Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles. Their limo had to turn back after the kids started clambering all over it, and the police had to beat them back with batons. One paper reported: "The Beatles fled to offices under the grandstand as crowds charged the entrance gates. Time and again, police were forced to hit out with their clubs, to keep the fans off the gates. Youths then charged the wooden barricades which had been set up to keep the crowds back. They hurled sticks and bottles at police until they were finally turned away with a shoulder charge by officers who cleared a sort of no-man's land between the crowds and the exit gates. Meanwhile, The Beatles, who were virtually imprisoned beneath the grandstand by fans stampeding from one spot to another, made good their escape by armoured car at the opposite end of the stadium."
So you don't like TV, movies, OR popular music?
I never knew Xeifrank was Amish.
10. Yeah, I come here for my baseball fix, not my emmy, tv chat, movie chat, music chat or tv female fixation chat. I don't mind Bob's cat chat though. :) vr, Xei
No, but there seems to be some thought in the organization that he may start this weekend against Colorado.
I'd certainly prefer him over Hendrickson.
WWSH
for some reason i'm thinking it was even crazier.
Josh Bell
19 yrs old in the pioneer league, switch hitter and tried to play 3b but most likely will have to move across the diamond or to left field.
202AB 12hr 21bb 61k 297/364/579
He could be a good breakout pick for next year depending on if he can cut down his k rate. gotta love the power and switch hitting abilities though.
Couldn't agree more. I've been so out of the loop this week.
As for hearing/seeing what they sounded like without as many screams, there's some pretty good pro-shot footage on youtube from the 1966 tour in Germany. "Nowhere Man" sounded really good from what I remember. And the Budokan shows are on there too (including a full band version of "Yesterday" that I'd never known existed).
wow Logan White & his staff just keeps pulling rabbits out of there hats, great news. thanks Nate.
That seemed to be original plan, but Gurnick in the most recent Dodgers mailbag indicated the organization is seriously thinking about Kuo starting.
Grady's been pretty flexible in general, so maybe he talked to Colletti about alternatives to Hendrickson, who's been obviously inconsistent. Or perhaps the front office staff decided to really mull the issue over.
WWSH
Has Kuo been called up or is this some levity on the part of some humorous posters?
Furcal, SS
Lofton, CF
Lugo, 3B
Nomar, 1B
Kent, 2B
Ethier, LF
Martin, C
Repko, CF
Penny, P
I guess Lofton is so bad defensively that Repko has to play CF and RF.
Kuo 3.0 IP 1 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 5 K 1 HR
44 pitches. 28 strikes
WWSH
reading his line just makes me all the more gitty about his call up.
Inspite of Girardi, their starting pitching still might be good enough to pull them through.
S Bills
M Penny
T Hendrickson
W Maddux
T Off
F Lowe
S Bills
S Kuo
M Penny
I'd be surprised if we moved back Penny's start for Kuo's sake, though. And Bills has just pitched too well as of late, although perhaps there are concerns about his workload. The most sensible thing would be to have Kuo take Hendrickson's place in the rotation, but with the off day, he wouldn't be in line to start this weekend anyhow.
Anyhow, I guess we'll see what happens.
WWSH
As far as I can tell, Grittle's pretty seat-of-the-pants, so he might just do that after the call-up.
WWSH
When you've scored 2 runs in your last 27IP, not sure benching your best power guy is the right way to go.
Have you visited there yet? If you end up going there, you have to promise you won't skate in the breezeway under Gilbert Hall. The skaters there used to drive me crazy! So loud!

any details on why?
LaRoche seems to have been banged up quite a bit this season, although none of the injuries seem to have been truly serious. I hope this latest one is the same.

Whats up with Laroche?
WWSH
it was, you should have seen it, it was beautiful.
Stupid DirecTV doesn't have the game today.
Good for Penny to get out of the inning unscathed--I was worried he'd fall apart.
WWSH
We shoul be teeing off on this guy, good change-up or no.
Nomar will probably tee off on this guy.
WWSH
He led the AL in balks in 2001 with 6.
his fastball on the fox/prime gun tops out at 81MPH.
He actually made a very nice running catch on a hard hit ball from Bradley.
Bradley's numbers look pretty good--of course, the real question is whether or not he can stay healthy.
WWSH
I'll say this, though. My family was much less intrigued by the existence of Timmerman (sorry, just one n) Airport in Milwaukee than I was. Suggestions that we stop for a visit were, perhaps unsurprisingly, laughed off.

Looking at Michalak's stats, we may be stunned to be so bad given the breaks we've had. Do our trainers know how to treat shock?
Thank you Martin. You are one of the few we can count on.
it was a pretty good pick off move sorry about the typo.
I don't know anything about business programs, other than that they breed capitalists... ;-)
His head is gonna explode when Grady takes him out of the game before the fifth inning, because he's already thrown 300 pitches.
You know, USC (my current school) has a decent business program. Though I wouldn't know much details about it.

ps they gave us Tod Hollensworth to start.
However, Byrnes is playing in one of the best parks for triples.
It really is like watching pre-All-Star break Chad Billingsley.
Whether or not the Red Sox are contenders was a question I could not answer today.
https://griddle.baseballtoaster.com/archives/489370.html
They're not contenders now. Deader than Julius Caesar, as Charlie put it last night.
told you.
Hume was good, but wonderful? I beg to differ.
I'm no expert, and I can see this pitcher has absolutely nothing, but some change of speed. Someone said we were only hitting fastballs and they could be right' despite these hits.
Never mind.
That makes it 7-2 DBacks.
And you call yourself a baseball fan!
How can you forget the AL leader in balks from one year?
Hernandez has thrown just 68 pitches in seven innings.
Anyone watching/listening/at the game able to give a Beatles music report?
he can name all the american presidents though.
161 I thinks it too late tonight, but I'm hoping next time.
You could grab me on the street and yell "Hey Timmermann, 19!"
And I would say "Rutherford Hayes!"
it seems like ESPN breeds there announcers that way.
And I would say "Rutherford Hayes!"*
show off.

Some rules/male dress code at BJU
-Students may not listen to Country, Jazz, New Age, Rock, Rap, or Contemporary Christian music.
-DVD/VCRs are not allowed in residence halls; DVD players on computers cannot be used for watching films. Televisions may be used only as monitors to play video games.
My Favorite Rule
-Students are forbidden to attend movie theaters or, when visiting local homes, to watch any films with a rating higher than a G rating. Residence hall students are not permitted to play, use, or own video games that are rated T, M, or Ao or that include profanity, sensual or suggestive dress, rock music, graphic violence, or demonic themes.
-Each student is provided with a filtered e-mail account. Using unfiltered Internet access via computer, mobile phone, or satellite phone is prohibited for residence hall students.
-Men's hair must be traditionally styled with a conservative cut. Hair must not be colored, highlighted, shaved, shelved, tangled or spiked. Sideburns may not reach past the lower opening of the ear. No facial hair is permitted; students must be clean shaven.
-Socks are required at all times.
yeah, that throw had him beat.
Not that I mind, of course... his new album is pretty good.
hes turned into billingsley pre all star break.
wow
Penny made to many pitches, so yeah.
At the Naval Academy, where McCain's son is currently a student, IIRC, all plebes (i.e. freshmen) are prohibited from playing all video games when on the Yard during the academic year. In fact, they may only be allowed to play video games when on leave outside of a 20-some-odd mile radius of campus.
We don't have these sorts of movie restrictions, though.
To everyone their own, I suppose.
WWSH
Time of game: 1:51
Channel 13 has a lot of time to fill now.
USNA has roughly the same grooming rules, though.
WWSH
But I'm afraid he may have to get back and learn how to plate it again. His arm still seems fine, at least.
WWSH
What passed for fun? Sneaking out of the dorms after the strict eleven o'clock curfew to hit the nearby Waffle House.
This is, by the way, the same university that thought it was a great idea to encourage their conservative Christian donor base by bringing in the always inspirational Ann Coulter. (They finally caved to public pressure and canceled her appearance.)
I'm going to call the commisioner's office tomorrow and complain about MLB extra innings. I'm sure it will be a useless exercise. Maybe I'll call DirecTV, as well, but it just seems ridiculous not to be able to watch the games I want to. Maybe MLB.TV will be high enough quality. But then you don't get Vin with that, do you?
WWSH
End of R.
I suspect tomorrow will be their regression game against Hendrickson.
I think that you have said more there than you realize. Penny hasn't grown much as a pitcher(and maybe not emotionally too) over his career. I think he needs another pitch to become more consistently good.
The answer. "To wake up and find himself married to Anne Coulter." A definite wrist slitter.
Sorry, that is awful, going to politics. I'm sorry. Its really to wake up a 2006 Giant's Fan.
I still laugh at the fact that JD Drew attended Florida State. He must have felt really out of place.
They do black out the local team (or if you are in their blackout area, which sometimes doesn't make sense), but that's because you supposedly can get the game anyway on the local channel.
Squirrels on a highway...
tomorrow will probably be a slug fest on both sides.
That was one of my 10-year-old's spelling words for tonight.
I think they called in the ATF to destroy the card.
WWSH
Repko singled to left, R. Martin out at home, R. Martin to third, J. Repko to second advancing on throw
????
"Jason Repko singles on a ground ball to left fielder Todd Hollandsworth. Russell Martin out at home, left fielder Todd Hollandsworth to third baseman Edwin Encarnacion to second baseman Brandon Phillips to first baseman Scott Hatteberg to catcher David Ross to third baseman Edwin Encarnacion. Jason Repko to 2nd on the throw."
Hilarious.
No wonder it took so long - the little GameDay transcriber Gremlin had to type all that.
And the blackout rules are stupid. I am in Nashville, but I get blacked out for Cincinatti. In addition, they usually black out at least one weekend game.
This is a game where a cushion would be real nice.
WWSH
"The Reds had the Repko between second and first"
I like that, let's go with it.
TV rights issues make no sense. Why does the NFL still have its weird blackout rules and why are out of town games only available through Direct TV?
I could get all Gregg Easterbrook on you and point out that people in Tehran have more options to watch NFL games than most people in the US.
Because I might drive 13 hours from Salt Lake City to Phoenix and buy a ticket to watch the Diamondbacks. Or I might drive 9 hours to Denver. MLB wouldn't want to deprive the Dbacks or Rockies of that potential revenue!
I don't think the NFL would care if you bought a Rockies ticket.
I would have known that.
Now if you yell "44!" I'll be stumped.
How about Alaska?
That makes no sense unless it's available locally. I always assumed they were trying to protect the local channel that was carrying it in that situation.
I live in San Diego so any Padre game on EI is blacked out, I can watch the local channel carrying it (there is an issue if the local channel isn't carrying it).
Hey Bob, 21!
Everyone else, minus the pitcher's spot, is a collective 10-for-16.
The key to remembering the presidents in order is to remember a few presidents as "anchors" and then you can add or subtract from there.
The multiples of five are handy:
Monroe
Tyler
Buchanan
Garfield
McKinley
Coolidge
Kennedy
Reagan

Mr. Customer really likes Millard Fillmore.
Anyway.
You're thinking of "Mallard" not "Millard". The President was edgier, and most likely, quite a bit more witty.

And he sent Commodore Matthew Peary to Japan to go tell the Japanese that they should be friendlier.
Of course by the time Peary got to Japan, Franklin Pierce was president.
Franklin Pierce was a bad president and is the subject of little or no historical interest from academics. When CSPAN did their "American Presidents" series spot for Pierce, their "expert" was a guy who wrote celebrity biographies mainly.
Nathaniel Hawthorne was a buddy of Franklin Pierce.
But I've digressed from my own digression!
And so it begins.

just sayin'.
I'd love to get out of this town. I guess they didn't use "gork" where I come from...
Commernist Heathen.
Anyone who works on politics in the 1850s would know something about Pierce. As a historical personage, though, he pales in comparison to figures like Douglas and Lincoln who loom over the period. But the Pierce administration is plenty important for its role in Bleeding Kansas.

VPs are WAY harder, because they double-up a lot.
I've never heard it, either. Must be a regional thing...

It was also in Bull Durham. That was a movie about minor league basball.
At a ninth grade assembly, the candidates for the student body offices got up and gave speeches.
One of the candidates for vice-president said, "Everybody remembers the first president and probably the second and third, but who remembers the name of the first, second, and third vice-president?"
I kept my mouth shut although I wanted to say "Adams, Jefferson, and Burr!"
Tomko is starting to regress to his old ways...

Go figure.
With a 5-run lead and a gassed pen, I thought it was the right move to try to get 2 IP out of Dessens.
Oh well...
WWSH
Grits, please don't bring in Timmy!
I wouldnt give him anything close.
Freel's a much easier out.
Or is it just me?
I don't think Sammy could give us more than 1 IP today. I worry about him even just pitching the ninth in all due honesty.
WWSH
Better to walk Dunn than give up the HR.
Now bring in Bull or Saito.
I hope to win the lottery.
how so? Freel has a higher OBP then Dunn.
in all honesty that pitch was just a tab outside.
I am in Los Angeles. But I've never seen Bull Durham.
I am in Los Angeles. But I've never seen Bull Durham.
Don't forget the $9 million mediocre shortstop!
agreed, but i think Dessens could have gone the complete 2.JMO
I kinda wanted to see if Edwin could leave 8 guys on base in one game.
Martin dose that very well.
Indeed. Faustian.
Against the Giants, Freel has an OBP of .255!
or broxton made a great pitch to a hitter that hardly ever strikes out. I guess its how you look at it.
I do it every time.
Me too. Plus, I'm not really sure Ann Coulter counts as "politics." In fact, I don't think she counts at all.
Although, he has had a decent year with the Reds overall.
I'm on best behavior here, but I keep expecting the my utterly profane and sacreligious personality to spill over.
Thus far, you've managed to remain a cool customer...
uh, small sample size maybe? Hatteberg has had 58bbs in 383abs coming into this game with an ISOd of .92
I was just saying that those two at bats by Hatteburg, are things he normally wouldnt do in the past, and are reasons why he no longer plays for Oakland.
Double Play?
There's also no such thing as a Moneyball at bat, so, transitively, there's no such thing as an anti-Moneyball one.
Look deep. They're in there.
http://snltranscripts.jt.org/88/88jmockme.phtml
Thanks for playing Brandon.
Good job Brox!
None of them can only play 1st base.
"You mock me" is one of those SNL sayings (along with, e.g., "ACT-ing!") that you're never sure if anyone else is gonna "get"
I throw out "Hey, you're Tony Randall!" whenever somebody tends to repeat themselves. It's from Mr. Short term memory. Absolutely nobody gets that one.
