The starting pitcher for the Cubs today at Philadelphia: Les Walrond, 29 years old, 18 2/3 career innings, 18 earned runs allowed. Perhaps his average of eight strikeouts per nine innings will win out.
* * *
vr, Xei
Les Walrond is the major leagues' most exciting pitcher!
Someone's bank. I'm unsure in to which account it's been deposited.
And for rotisserie players, dig this comparison:
Fantasy Comparison:
Johan Santana 1666
Francisco Rodriguez 1518
Joe Nathan 1458.5
Jonathan Papelbon 1448.5
Les Walrond -8
Come for the comments, stay for the cheese steak sandwiches. vr, Xei
Followed up by complimentary angioplasties or quadruple bypasses.
Cholesterol, where your health demands that you be below the Mendoza line!
How about "County Central Committee"?
Man, how I've missed Bob's one liners.
Les Walrond, After the Music.
Pirates: 4
Dodgers: 8
vr, Xei
I'm fairly confident the probability of that is zero. :)
LOL (and a point well made)
Furcal, SS
Lofton, CF
Nomar, 1B
Kent, 2B
Anderson, RF
Lugo, 3B
Ethier, LF
Martin, C
Maddux, P
1,7,1,7,0,5,2
I do think it'd make sense to give Lofton a chance to rest -- he hasn't been doing particularly well lately and his positive contributions are essentially on the offensive side of things only.
Everybody loves the Cubs, eh? Not this guy over here right now.
I said it at the time and I stick by it, those two losses against the Cubs would be the primary culprit if we end up missing the playoffs.

I am otherwise hoping the Marlins hold on tonight against the Mets. They've got 6 left with the Phils, and so long as their mathematically alive, well, you get the point. It's bases loaded Mets, bottom nine, two outs, in a 6-3 game.
San Diego, Philadelphia, and Toronto do not have their own broadcasts on EI. They only appear if the visiting team is showing the game.
And one other question... why did I pay for EI?
It's true.
Overall, I prefer EI because I would rather watch a baseball game on a TV than a computer monitor.
The DBacks probably didn't contract for late season road games because they didn't think they would still be in it.
Those were simulposts.
HFA doesn't get its own post.
I don't remember Rex Huddler ever doing that.
I feel like John Wayne in "The Shootist."
But I did enjoy the badly timed single by Maddux. Such is life with the Dodgers.
94 Heh. "Are you saying 'Boo' or 'Boo-urns'?
Moleman: "I was saying 'Boo-urns!'
They're doing about as well as I am against the boss guy in act two of Launch Base Zone.
Tight collar tonight in the NL West.
Well, if the lighting is bad, I suppose.
Okay, now back to this regularly scheduled dud of a game.
Because he's a pitcher and not a very good or knowledgeable hitter.
If the Dodgers are lucky, he will get into the game.
It's not like take signs are always heeded.
Either the balls find gloves, or they dont.
Tonite, they havent.
But generally in the NL West, he's been really bad. I remember when he was the Rockies closer. Those were good times.
I have to believe have someone hit for Maddux here
Pitcher Gonzalez up.
WHY?!!!
I've got deja vu.
If Shawn Chacon is on the hill, dont bunt.
Just as That Furcal tripled for the Dodgers?
Wonder if Jimbo will pull him.
http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B08110PHI2004.htm
They eked out a 15-4 win at Coors Field.
Make that at CBP.
And the starting pitching has been decent too. I think the answer lies between the foul pole and the left field Pavilion.
i forgot i have a dvr. sandy made over 200 pitches in a 13 inning game in 1961. 9-20-61. mother of pearl that is ton of pitches
Those are some pretty rough fans...
ps - hit n run with maddux and martin wasn't the greatest move.
A little to your right.
And that knocks Wells out of the box.
Shawn Hillegas.
Thank you.
Guy Hecker in 1886 and Jim Tobin in 1942.
And ARGH. Curses.
I think Russ was a little too nonchalant on that throw. Gotta keep the usual rhythm on any throw on a stolen base.
You mean that William Holden has dynamited the bridge, but Alec Guinness doesn't want it blown up because he's become obsessed with building it?
Gameday is stuck on Bay swinging for strike 3
Although I know the D's look like a very .500ish team I look ahead because they have a few young pitchers who will get better and Kemp,Laroche,Loney, Ethier,Furcal, and Martin. Wht a team we will have.
Even without the following call from Erica, I just don't see why anyone would want to help Thomas. He sounds like a jerk.
Tonight's episode of Cheap Seats on ESPN Classic is, well, a classic. 1985 Roller Derby "action" between the T-birds and Outlaws, with lots of airtime for Mrs. (er, Ms.) Georgia Haas.
Hi-lar-ious
Not one...ever.
I will say this:
Go St. Bonaventure!
But I don't cover high school football anymore.
There is a duplicate set of checkered jerseys. They've been handed out before.
My sidebar turns into a typographical nightmare however.
vr, Xei
If you knew that these guys could get you deep then you can manage differently and if Martin makes an adequate throw, then its only a one run inning.
But also, when you only score 1 run in 6 against Snell and only 2 (both unearned) against Chacon, you can't really complain about the pitching.
vr, Xei
vr, Xei
Leaving the pitcher in just 1 batter too soon.
Drew's in a zone.
239 Mark it is, I think. But nobody new is going to get an inning or an AB with this regime. You know, I didn't desert this management even in the 1 for fouteen streak.
But suddenly they have showed their unwillingness to play our youngsters for next year, and also some plain lunacy. I am scared they will give up our youngsters for more hopeless vets at this point, which I didn't feel before.
"I know what I want! I get what I neeed!"
...(useless car talk)...
"and that's what's to me, possibilities!"
Stupid mosquito.
He's overdue.
Little clearly takes chances.
He takes many many chances.
You mean you didn't like my earlier answers of Guy Hecker and Jim Tobin?
To be fair for the first 5 months of the season, there was much, much, much, much more displeasure aimed at Ned and/or McCourt than Grady.
If you're gonna give Drew a rest, give him a rest tomorrow against a LHP that he's never faced before.
Against Shawn Chacon?
Thats terrible managing by Little.
vr, Xei
But the Padres have gotten a lot of momentum from acquiring David Wells.
That's because if you're at the top of a hill and you're in a go-kart with David Wells in it, it will win the race more often than not.
6th inning: given up 4 runs
7th inning: given up 3 runs
8th inning: given up 6 runs.
vr, Xei
Monday - Dodgers get miracle win over Padres. Phillies get clobbered by Cubs. Edge DODGERS
Tuesday - Padres go back into first with win while Dodgers lose and Phillies creep up closer. Edge PADRES
Wednesday - Phillies get good pitching from Myers and win while Dodgers and Padres see their old aces struggle. Edge PHILLIES
Your typical wild throw on a stolen base attempt.
Just a wild guess but losing to the Pirates might have something to do with that...
And I'll be there to see it in person!
vr, Xei
Greg,
These words apply to DT commenters also:
Small sample size.
Consider the individual number of commenters to the number of comments.
Man, I am old....
vr, Xei
It was more likely to hit the top of the wall.
And I didn't even know what that meant at the time!
vr, Xei
He still hasn't gotten anybody out.
Oh... so... close Loney.
vr, Xei
Have you ever talked to my buddy Sisyphus? We used to hang out together, but then he fell in with that French existentialist crowd and became quite insufferable.
What?
The Dodgers led throughout the game Friday.
Philly is off, they play on Monday against Clemens in Philly.
You had that one too?
vr, Xei
You know who I wish was pitching?
Les Walrond.
Its probably Martin/Drew/Furcal/Kemp
Since Grady's expose on how Saito shall be used, has he in fact, been used in such situation?
Colostrum
I had a weird day.
Need either Nomar or Kent to be clutch.
The Dodgers are going to raise Jon, me, and quite a few others, over the Mendoza line before the end of the season.
He's thrown alot of pitches.
Jeff Kent's due.
Yes, I'm cheering for Kent here.
This one hurts. A lot.
vr, Xei
Though against the Pirates, you shouldn't have to.
Or, "Its just baseball. I dont even like playing"
Or, "I made over $58,000 tonight. What do I care?"
The Dodgers have now lost 3 series to under .500 teams this month, they split the two series they played against over .500 teams this month.
ps Matt is only 21 so i'm still hope full with him.
Since other people are mentioning what they're going to now watch to get over the pain of this one, I'm going to watch part of The 40 Yr Old Virgin again just to make me feel better about my life.
Tomorrow's another day. I hope.
Poor Delwyn Young btw, finally gets big chance at the plate, only to get called back.
night folks!
i'm with you underdog, i'll watch 40 year old virgin as well. this team/game just breaks your heart some times.
Ethier/Kemp have definitely struggled, although its gotta be tough on Kemp to expect him to be a good pinch hitter. If he never plays, I dont expect him to hit well when he's in there.
Gen3Blue - What did Kennedy say? Thanks.
The Dodgers have been 29-18.
don't even try that with me buddy, Kempy swang at some horrible pitches PERIOD!! he should take a page out of Russell or Ethier.
i see you're point about Kemp, i really think he's gonna be a good one givin the chance.
:o)
No, he swung at a slider that started at the knees, and ended up near the dirt (Kemp still hasn't figured out that if a breaking ball starts at the knees, it won't be a strike), and struck out on a pitch that could have been called low, or inside.

unabashedly nerdly viewers of younger age, marvel at the fact that this was once a tremendously addictive success.
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/the-game-of-the-century/
I clicked on that! I want my life back!
Sorry for the late reply but I actually did get to sleep because I was being sarcastic.
Now I find I can't remember but it was mostly happy drivel.
ooohh .... I remember that ... and yes, I did waste more than a few minutes in that world from time to time!
(Diane the nerd)
and Cat Stevens immortalized you in "Tea for the Timmermann"

Bob's ego must be on an alltime high at the moment.
