The Dodger postseason roster moves have begun with ... (ta da!) the addition of Las Vegas shortstop Wilson Valdez and the yet-again subtraction of reliever Giovanni Carrara from the 40-man roster, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.
Rafael Furcal won't be looking over his shoulder. Valdez had a nice enough on-base percentage (.366) for the 51s, but it was nearly as high as his slugging percentage (.381), and he was caught stealing on 40 percent of his 43 attempts. Valdez is 28.
In addition, Marlon Anderson had bone-chip removal surgery, right-elbow version. Recovery is expected in three weeks, Gurnick wrote.

You'd think after about 25 CSs he'd give it up.

ps east l.a guy/monterey park guy making a dumb post maybe.
If you read his offensive stats above, unless you've seen Valdez in person, defense was not the first thing you looked at. Ha! :)
I would like to see the Dodgers make some more subtractions without worry about additions/replacements right now, but maybe they have to fill a spot when they clear one.

I sure hope those weren't magic bone chips, like the ones in Beltre's ankle in '04. If they were, MARLON could be back to just Marlon next season.

At this point, that screen name is only a rumor (which Steve has no doubt heard...)

In other news, I recently watched "The Graduate" for the first time. I thought the ending was disappointing, and not really consistent with the vibe of the rest of the movie...
Oh yeah, basketball still exists. I had forgotten. Interest in the NBA seems to have plummeted to pre-Magic/Bird levels...
There are a ton of job openings right now. Just an hour or so ago, 13 new postings appeared, including Cal State-San Luis Obispo, Cornell, USC, MIT, and UCLA.

Does anyone remember the theme song to This Week in Baseball way back when. So elegant and, I don't know, cerebral? Just very in harmony with the game itself.
What's all this CRUNCH-CRUNCH-CRUNCH---CHUGGA-GHUGGA-CHUGGA, have to do with a slow, languid Sunday afternoon sport?
I can rock with the best of them. I grew up on Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. That's not it. It's just obnoxious and stupid. Rock music everywhere!
Do I need to investigate this further? I know almost nothing about most music from the 90's/2000's, so any help would be appreciated.
For lineup introductions we could have "Fanfare for the Common Man." For double plays we could use some of the faster parts of "Rodeo."
Sorry, I meant "hear" instead of "here." I don't want to be castigated off DT.
Fighting against the current zeitgeist, I saw Lucky Number Slevin last night. It's excellent. It's sort of like what The Big Lebowski might have been, if it had been directed by Tarantino, while some one was holding a gun to his head, saying, "One pop culture reference and I blow your brains out; just one; try me."
Thanks. I just listened to a few songs from Radiohead. Color me unimpressed, and consider the investigation closed.
I highly recommend Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It became an instant favorite for me, and holds up over many repeat viewings. Maybe Robert Downey's best performance (unless you really like Chaplin).
IMO, o.k. computer stunk it up i don't like it.
Creep

I'll think you'll like those...
I've got Lucky Number Slevin high in my (greencine) queue. Yeah, heard it was good, if poorly titled. But up next is a "Vengeance" double-header: OldBoy and Lady Vengeance. Can't wait!
Oh, and, are there baseball games today? I am amazed at how little I care all of a sudden. I'm sure I'll wake back up for the world series.
Mentioning Downey reminds me of Hugo Pool, which makes me happy. It may not be worth a discrete rental fee, but if your Netflix queue is getting short, it's a nice way to spend an hour and a half.
Did anyone hear Easy Star All-Stars (the musical collective behind 2003's underground hit, DUB SIDE OF THE MOON) reggae interpretation of OK Computer? Radiodread I think it was called. Pretty darned cool.
Okay, second chance based on D4P. This is a big vote of confidence, considering you don't watch The Office.
I listened to Talk Show Host, Fake Plastic Trees, Inside My Head, and Paranoid Android.
I couldn't get through a minute of any of them.
i was not impressed with that album.
Of what, rocking the casbah...?
I saw Easy Star All-Stars perform "Dark Side of the Moon" live a couple years ago, and their new "Radiodread" album is awesome, but then I think "OK Computer" really is one of the best albums to come out in my lifetime, right there with My Morning Jacket's "At Dawn."
I'm still trying to find the DT commenter who turned me onto Muse by posting the video for "Knights of Cydonia." That band is great. My favorite song of theirs is "Time is Running Out."
Muse is a good band.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang has a gigantic plot hole that I was so hopping would be filled up with a clever ending. It never was and the movie left me entirely unsatisfied.
135. Old Boy is a great flick.
145. The Clash's biggest 'innovations' consist of extending punk's short life and stopping it from becoming a neo-nazi subculture. I love The Clash, but hardly point to them as changing the music sound scape.
I would've thought every fan of Muse was also a Radiohead fan, but then you don't like "OK Computer." Funny how our tastes differ.
I don't really care for a lot of the Radiohead songs that are computer effects and weird voice sounds without any real singing, or a lot of their older, noisier, garage rock sounding stuff, but they had a great middle period.
The live version of "Like Spinning Plates" is so amazing I don't see how anyone couldn't like it.
Am I the only one who doesn't like the syth produced rock riffs that go along with tv baseball? It seems so.
As for the Radiohead discussion. They're not really for baseball fans. Stick with your John Fogerty.
Park's vegeance trilogy is so good. I love those films.

I think Shannyn Sossamon is beautiful.
Sounds good. Thanks.
The only thing wrong with her is that her movies are bad. So, it's embarrassing. An actual conversation I once had:
-Hey, what are you watching?
-Uh, I think it's called, uh, A Knight's Tale.
-Loser.
I find the Rules of Attraction an entertaining and funny movie.
Radiohead - pretty good band, not one of my favorites. I recommend "Paranoid Android", "Street Spirit (Fade Out)", "No Surprises", and "2+2=5"
Muse - finally bought their two latest albums, haven't given them proper listening to give a good review. I recommend "Falling Away With You", "Knights of Cydonia", "Starlight", and "Time Is Running Out"
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - excellent movie filled with smart dialogue, great performances, and lots of humor.
Lucky Number Slevin - I thought it was pretty average. Seemed like it was trying to be Tarantinoesque but fell short. Decent way to spend a couple hours, but nothing I'd recommend highly.

Looks like Psycho went a little too far although those comments don't sound all that bad to me.
A) I am not Hispanic
B) Whatever it takes to get rid of Lyons is fine by me.
I assume this will mean the Dodgers will have new broadcaster for next year as well.
I wondered why he was not on.
Shannyn is in a American remake of Takashi Miike's most mainstream film, One Missed Call.
Greg, what do you not like about Steve Lyons. I don't like his lame attempts at humor, and his jocky sarcasm that he seems to take for wit.
She was and so was Jack Black. Such a great job. Dalai Lama and the Wicked Scepter sketches are probably my favorites. I saw their live tour a few years ago.
Such a great show, I meant.
He's not smart, he's not funny, he's another cliche-filled ex-ballplayer, he brings no insight to the games (unlike, say, Orel Hershiser, who does a great job), he states the obvious, he waits for his turn to speak (instead of playing off his broadcast partners).
So, basically, he's slightly worse than every other former ballplayer now in the booth.
Lyons was trying to riff sarcastically on Pinella's more offensive comment about Scutaro production is like finding a wallet.
Think about it. Does baseball condone finding a wallet and plundering it? That's why Lyons said he could have been the guy without the wallet and not being comfortable...ah, forget.
Fire the white guy.
Perhaps that's not a fair comparison. No, indeed it is not.
Vin's job is to describe the play, and spin the amusing yarn in between pitches. Lyons's job is to give some sort of deeper analysis, which he does not.
Plus, you just kind of dissed Vin Scully. For shame.
I doubt that will happen, so now one must wonder if this means a move to the booth for FMLMKK...
i stood next to shannyn sossamon at all tomorrow's parties in long beach once.
i think it was scott long who touted the knights of cydonia video? i could be wrong though.
also, watch the carrot top commentary track on the rules of attraction dvd. it's the only thing he's ever done that could possibly come close to redeeming his existence.
Is this like a test to see how many of us are stoned at two in the afternoon? How on earth did Carrot Top get a commentary track on that DVD?
Anyone else ordering the UFC tonight?
In case, you know, he wasn't being paid enough.
Jonas Salk, FDR, and Mother Theresa, on the other hand, are all fair game.
And I did misread it, he can't opt out until after this year.
He also gets free webhosting from the Yankees.
Created Polio vaccine.
Sometimes you can almost decipher Charlie's thoughts on Lyons, "You're a pr*ck, not funny, and a dork...but I sort of like ya anyway." They do have pretty good banter most of the time I must say. And I don't think Lyons is wholly without "insight".
I think the network PC thing goes too far. But Lyons isn't the kind of guy to engender sympathy. Most people instinctually have a thing against uncouth, sarcastic jocks. (Unless they're actually funny, sadly Lyon's is the anti-Christ of funny.)
I hope Rick Monday takes over for Lyons. He and Charlie make a nice pair. Although today's networks may want to have a "youthful edge" vibe.
Other than disregarding the contributions of his entire medical team, taking all the credit for the Polio vaccine, and downplaying the myriad cancers that may have been caused by the first Polio vaccine, Salk is great.
See, contrarians can find fault with anybody. Don't even get me started on Mother Theresa.
Penn and Tellers show (which I can't say the title of) had an episode where they revealed some of Mother Theresa's faults.
You historians think you know a lot about famous historical figures and what happened in the past...
"Lyons was trying to riff sarcastically on Pinella's more offensive comment about Scutaro production is like finding a wallet.
Think about it. Does baseball condone finding a wallet and plundering it? That's why Lyons said he could have been the guy without the wallet and not being comfortable...ah, forget.
Fire the white guy"
I've been waiting an hour for someone on DT to tell me how I'm wrong...Am I the only one who thinks found wallets are to be returned intact and not plundered? This is what Lyons was alluding to, not being comfortable sitting next to a guy that finds a wallet and considers it Scutaro production or found money. Pinella's a cuban from Tampa by the way.
All I can think of is Fox fired the white guy for imply a lack of comfort with a Latino regardless of what that minority said?
Jeez, its not like Psycho said Hymietown or whatever...that would really be unforgivable.
That's pretty much what the US needs more of these days: black and white thinking
En-kuh-nar-see-own.
208 - to emphasize, Steiner cannot, for whatever reason, correctly pronounce the Spanish surname "Encarnacion"; given that Spanish has a very regular and simple pronunciation, it just floors me that a man who is paid a pretty good piece of change to get these things right butchers it on a daily basis. (Thank God Juan E. is no longer with the team.) If Steiner is like a lullaby, it's one played by a trio of jackhammer, steam calliope, and jet engine.

Exactly. We had no chance to win anyways, but this is ridiculous.
Not really.

Beane has trained him well...
1) From "Dodgers Is a Name You Can Trust Again," J.A. Adonde, LA Times, Oct. 9...
"One thing he (Colletti) shouldn't do and this goes for the Angels as well is trade for Alex Rodriguez. I don't want to hear that Rodriguez's problems stem from playing in New York and the pressure the fans put on him. His worst weekend of the season was here in Southern California, some 2,800 miles from Yankee Stadium, when he was one for 15 with 10 strikeouts in a series against the Angels.
"My problem is this: Name a team that has been better off for taking on Rodriguez's contract, even a portion of it. The Rangers? They never won the division with him. The Yankees? They never made the World Series with him.
"And in some ways there was less pressure on him in New York; with so many great hitters around him, it wasn't as if he had to produce for them to win. If he's thrust in a situation where he's the only hope, he hasn't shown the mental fortitude to handle that demand."
A part of my reaction to this is that the Rangers had/have a lot more probs than A-Rod plus several others could solve.
And some players thrive in the NY environment. Others don't, for whatever reasons. As far as not doing well vs. the Angels, if a player has put himself in a mental box, just going on the road isn't necessarily going to change anything.
2) Which leads to this, touching on the Sports Illustrated story about A-Rod's probs fitting in with the Yankees and his lack of "clutchiness." I think his comments about other teammates and why he gets criticism are revealing --
