Dodger Thoughts Day - Don't Forget To Get Your Tickets
2007-06-07 17:30
by Jon Weisman

Dodger Thoughts will celebrate its fifth anniversary July 21, and the celebration will take place at Dodger Stadium while the Dodgers host the New York Mets. And you have the opportunity to pay to be a part of it all!

Each ticket to the game will cost $24.50, including fee for e-mailing the ticket to you. No, we are not sitting in the bleachers for the Saturday afternoon game. Per my request, Dodger Thoughts commenter Bhsportsguy is doing his best to get our group tickets in the shade.

To get a ticket, send me the $24.50 via the Paypal link on the sidebar. I'll then forward the money to Bhsportsguy, who will handle purchase and distribution.

The event depends on having at least 30 people attend, which looked likely based upon the interest that was expressed earlier this year. If for some reason the event gets called off, I will refund your money.

Questions? Comments? The floor is yours.

Repeating my LATed post:

Looks like we got a steal with Kyle Blair in the 5th round. Signability issues, but we should be able to afford him. Ranked the 9th best player in California by BA:

"9. Kyle Blair, rhp (National rank: 50)
School: Los Gatos (Calif.) HS. Class: Sr.
B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-3. Wt.: 200. Birthdate: 9/27/88.
Scouting Report: Blair was one of California's top high school pitchers last year, leading Los Gatos High to a sectional championship and throwing a perfect game along the way. He has been the state's top prep pitching prospect this season even though his team struggled, and he was getting better as the year progressed. Blair's best pitch is a curveball that gets solid 60 grades from scouts on the 20-80 scale thanks to its depth, mid-70s velocity and tight spin. Blair has solid control of the pitch and of his lively fastball, which was sitting 89-91 mph early in the year but had increased as the draft approached, touching 94-95 and sitting in the low 90s. Blair's athletic, strong build--which helped make him an all-conference water-polo player--makes him a candidate to be a middle-of-the-rotation starter, provided his changeup continues to come along and he continues to progress with his command. His makeup is universally lauded. He's committed to San Diego."

The Blair pick lessens my fears that McCourt might have ordered Logan & Co. to spend less money on the draft this year. Each of our first four picks were significant overdrafts, but Blair was basically the opposite.

4 More on that from Kevin Goldstein's running blog.

Kevin Goldstein (5:52:35 PM PST): Here comes the signability guys. The Red Sox finish the day with Will Middlebrooks, a guy I projected to the Twins in the first, and the Dodgers follow that up with righty Kyle Blair, who was in their mix in the first. Blair will likely need something close to $1 million in order to avoid going to college -- he's committed to San Diego.

2007-06-07 17:50:58
7.   Eric Enders
On Blair's scouting video, his fastball was mostly at 86-88, topping out at 91. It looks like he flies open a little bit and doesn't use his stride to his advantage, so maybe there's room for improvement on the velocity. His curveball looks really sweet and he appears to have good command of it.

On signability - Since Logan White took control of the drafts, the Dodgers have signed 33 out of 34 high school players selected in the first 10 rounds of the last 5 drafts.

8 That's a very good record, but we did let some lower-round guys get away, like Price and Savery.

I'm still ticked off that we let Chase Utley go to UCLA. (Although the current regime bears no blame for that.)

11 I think he focuses on signing all the guys in the first 10 rounds.

I believe he said something like it would be interesting to see if teams make runs at high ceiling guys in the early rounds tomorrow and risk losing them to college.

The phones will be busy tonight.

14 They stopped after the 5th round. In theory they could pick 45 more rounds, there has been some thought that teams will stop in 20's because they took away the draft and follow option but most teams will pick at least 20 more times so tomorrow will be a real busy day.

They start again at 8:30 a.m. PDT.

15 Pretty much what I was thinking. I think they'll have to rethink their format if they want to stay on TV next year.

If they knew that going in, I don't see how they don't sign him. LaRoche was what, a 23rd rounder? He got his seven figures.
2007-06-07 18:26:46
18.   Eric Enders
8 There are actually two HS players in the first 10 rounds we failed to sign: Cory Van Allen, 3rd round pick in 2003, and Michael Davitt, 9th round in '05. Still, that's not bad at all.

Van Allen ended up going to Baylor and signing with the Nationals for $170K as a fifth rounder in 2006. He's ranked as the 28th-best prospect in Washington's joke of a farm system.

Davitt ended up being drafted in the 29th round by the Angels last year. He signed with them but has not yet played a minor league game.

I didn't watch too much of the draft but I thought it worked fairly well from an entertainment viewpoint. Jim Callis seemed a little out of his element on TV but he provided solid analysis. I thought Keith Law was great. Even the Perfect Game guy (I can't remember his name) gave plenty of insight.

It sure beats Casey Stern and Darryl Hamilton.

18 I stand corrected. thanks.

BTW, I do understand the confusion and concern about this draft but it just bothered me that everyone wanted to create some conspiracy theory and not believe that Logan White and his team were not the ones responsible for this draft.

21 The Perfect Game guy did, however, make the mistake of saying that David Price went undrafted out of high school. Another annoying thing was the crawl at the bottom of the screen that repeatedly claimed the Dodgers had 4 consecutive Rookies of the Year from 1992-95. Which, I guess, is technically correct, but...

While it's not what we want since it's probably just for today, I think Little is sending Colletti a powerful message when he has to bench his big ticket free agent twice because of his extreme suckiness. I stayed up for the third night because I have decided winning a series at this date doesn't really matter: good pitching tells in the long run. But this means both of these teams are goung to be in good shape at the end of the year. But Pierre only has worth as a lead off batter, if anywhere, and0 thats a fact. And this is throwing a Rook (Kou) to the Lions.

Essentially the Dodgers turned Bocachica into Jayson Werth.

Jason Frasor

September 18, 2002: Sent by the Detroit Tigers to the Los Angeles Dodgers to complete an earlier deal made on July 25, 2002. The Detroit Tigers sent a player to be named later and Tom Farmer (minors) to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Hiram Bocachica. The Detroit Tigers sent Jason Frasor (September 18, 2002) to the Los Angeles Dodgers to complete the trade.

March 29, 2004: Traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Toronto Blue Jays for Jayson Werth.

It's the right boxscore. The confusion is from the way Retrosheet enters the play. Their software requires that Perez be listed as being out at second, but the PO is given to Snow.

In Perez's case, he was "out trying to stretch."

I don't know how this game will turn out. We could very well lose, making it a three-game sweep, and then I predict the Chicken Littles will be running around saying we're doomed this year, or it's time to trade the farm for the veteran messiah who will save us all. But the fact is, our #5 starter is more than holding his own against their #1 starter. If Tomko and Hendrickson stay out of the rotation, I am quite optimistic about how things are going to go over the next 100 plus games. We swept a series against the Pads at Petco early in the season, and if they pay us back here in kind it is not likely to be a big deal in the long run.

208,229 I agree; the good news is that Hendrickson & Tomko are out of the rotation. Billingsley is still out of the rotation, but with Schmidt back the rotation is truly deep now, with seemingly the right 6 guys at the top.

Okay, so I know I look on the bright side a lot but here it is... although we could still get swept in this series, as Canuck mentioned, we got a very strong start from our #5 starter. We ALSO got a very strong start from Schmidt. This series hasn't gone well but if at the start we had been offered the knowledge that Kuo and Schmidt are ready to contribue in exchange for a sweep, wouldn't you take it?
Oh, and we could still win this one. Bonus.

223. Yes, but you would think the hometown announcers would take the time to find out the correct pronounciation. They aren't even close on the Cheeee and the K part. It's a three letter last name.

Nice to see Wilson B work a walk there. I hope Furcal doesn't pop up trying to hit a homerun against Peavy, cuz it's not going to happen.

The Big Lebowski needs at least three viewings to even start to appreciate it. My first viewing ended up in utter disappointment. Second viewing got a few more laughs, but still the impression that it was overrated. Pretty much every viewing (probably 20 or so by now) since then has resulted in more appreciation.

Romano's trail goes cold in 2006. He started the season with the Brewers organization, but they let him go and then Tampa Bay gave him another shot. But he only lasted a couple of weeks at Durham and was released when Ben Zobrist was acquired from Houston.

I need to find a PI who specializes in finding guys like Jason Romano. I need a gumshoe wouldn't be afraid to take a slug in the shoulder, but then be right back at it. They'd likely have a girlfriend who could suck the bullet out.

Tonight seemed like the perfect situation to let Chad air it out to end the game.

Pros:
1) Increases Chad's endurance, perhaps for future starting opportunities

As I write this, there are 952 comments on the two threads of today. Thanks for holding the fort.

There are not many days that I go from lunch with Damon Lindelof (Lost) to a bomb scare that keeps me from getting back to my desk and stalls me from going to Riverside without actually preventing me from going to Riverside during rush hour(s), only to return home from Riverside in time to see the Dodgers score three seventh-inning runs off Jake Peavy. But this was one of them.

You get credit for a game played even if you never actually play in the game. If you are announced as a pinch hitter and then brought back after a pitching change, you still get credit for a game played.

But that doesn't continue a consecutive games streak.

Two different animals.

Or you can get injured while warming up on the mound.

345--Billingsley has a better K/9, better whip, better hr/9 than Randy Wolf does in comparing the two this season.

Thats not to say that Wolf should be the first guy taken out to get Billingsley in. However, I think there's a clear argument to believe Billingsley is better now, and will certainly be better in the future than Randy Wolf.

Yes, we can put all the blame on Nomar. (That is, unless you want to give a small share to Kent.) Here is a list of what Broxton did wrong:

One hard-hit ball to the gap.
One walk.

The negatives are obvious. But how about the positives? I'd take our current five man rotation over any in baseball. I'd take our bullpen (Bills, Brox, Saito) over any in baseball. I'd take our cathcer over any in baseball (Mauer is brittle). Little showed tonight he's not afraid to sit Pierre. Kemp in in the wings. Nomar will improve at the plate. Loney is in the wings.
2007-06-07 22:18:28
475.   Gen3Blue
Play Loney and Kemp right now and you will have at least an equal team for ~15 million less. By not adding Young , Hu and LaRoche I am only being extremely conservative. However, with just a rotation of Penny, Lowe, Wolfe, Kou and Billingsley, we could probably disguise our incompetence for most of the season.

Broxton should have been out of the inning after Nomar's brainfart.
1) Single to Kent.
2) E-3. Should have been 3-6-1.
3) Mental E-3. Should have been inning over on the 3-1.

After that, Broxton did what he does when it gets tight: Rear back and throw harder. What someone needs to tell him is that his pitches flatten out or something and become easier to hit.

Why are people so sure that Nomar will improve at the plate? It's not like he's getting robbed on a lot of balls in play, or hit a lot of deep fly balls that are dying at the track. He's swinging the bat with a Juan Pierre level of weakness, and has been doing so for quite length of time now.

Sorry, my bad, as I was not watching the game live, and the poor excuse for a substitute had Beimel relieving Billingsley and pitching to one guy in the 8th, and then being replaced by Broxton in the 9th. Still, I don't know why Beimel does not come in to face Gonzalez, especially with the recent report of him specializing in ground balls to the pitcher.

451 I couldn't agree more. As I related, I have Broxton on the fantasy teams and, of late, he's played a large part in blowing the team ERA for the week.

474 Pierre and Nomar should take "wings". I doubt Grady's resolve to bench Pierre will go beyond one game, though I wish you were right.

484 The official scorer can't assume the double play, but I can. That ball was sharply hit and right at Nomar. As 3-6-1 double plays go, that was an easy one.

Bummer for Broxton that the play to Kent was called a single. That should be an error and make all 5 runs unearned.

It is a trivial matter but still.

I would like to point out again that Chad Billingsley should have ended this game. As it stands now, I would guess Bills (38 pitches) and Broxton (28 pitches) are unavailable Friday, not to mention Broxton having to deal with the "not ready for closing" questions.

Way to go Dodgers - Way to botch a great effort for 8 innings with the 9th inning from hell!! Way to cap off a bad day at work. We finally get to Peavy and Nomar goes Buckner on us in the 9th. I've seen the Dodgers do this too many times against the Pads. Petco is our new "Temple of Doom" to quote former Dodger Steve Sax who used that term for the Old Murph!! I'm sick to my stomach and need to go to bed!!!

491 Thanks, Jon, and I'll have to blame the even poorer substitute box score that has Beimel not pitching. And I'll otherwise have to go back to my initial criticism of Grady. The insanity of the move was probably why I took the erroroneous box score over the t.v. substitute, I mean, the move seemed crazy to me at the time [as being completely unnecessary].

Before this road trip, I made a mental note that anything less than a 6-4 trip was unacceptable.

With tonight's 9th inning, the Dodgers ended the trip 5-5. Unacceptable.

I think Nomar will eventually improve, but he may need an extended "vacation" to spend time with the twins for a few days here.

Grrr...the Padres' postgame show are blaming this one on Broxton, saying closing is a lot different than pitching the 8th. Seems an awfully convenient excuse rather than the actual reason the Dodgers lost.
