Dodger Thoughts will celebrate its fifth anniversary July 21, and the celebration will take place at Dodger Stadium while the Dodgers host the New York Mets. And you have the opportunity to pay to be a part of it all!
Each ticket to the game will cost $24.50, including fee for e-mailing the ticket to you. No, we are not sitting in the bleachers for the Saturday afternoon game. Per my request, Dodger Thoughts commenter Bhsportsguy is doing his best to get our group tickets in the shade.
To get a ticket, send me the $24.50 via the Paypal link on the sidebar. I'll then forward the money to Bhsportsguy, who will handle purchase and distribution.
The event depends on having at least 30 people attend, which looked likely based upon the interest that was expressed earlier this year. If for some reason the event gets called off, I will refund your money.

Tonight's game (remember, it's just one game):
Twenty-five years ago today, Steve Garvey played in his 1000th consecutive game.
Looks like we got a steal with Kyle Blair in the 5th round. Signability issues, but we should be able to afford him. Ranked the 9th best player in California by BA:
"9. Kyle Blair, rhp (National rank: 50)
School: Los Gatos (Calif.) HS. Class: Sr.
B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-3. Wt.: 200. Birthdate: 9/27/88.
Scouting Report: Blair was one of California's top high school pitchers last year, leading Los Gatos High to a sectional championship and throwing a perfect game along the way. He has been the state's top prep pitching prospect this season even though his team struggled, and he was getting better as the year progressed. Blair's best pitch is a curveball that gets solid 60 grades from scouts on the 20-80 scale thanks to its depth, mid-70s velocity and tight spin. Blair has solid control of the pitch and of his lively fastball, which was sitting 89-91 mph early in the year but had increased as the draft approached, touching 94-95 and sitting in the low 90s. Blair's athletic, strong build--which helped make him an all-conference water-polo player--makes him a candidate to be a middle-of-the-rotation starter, provided his changeup continues to come along and he continues to progress with his command. His makeup is universally lauded. He's committed to San Diego."
Kevin Goldstein (5:52:35 PM PST): Here comes the signability guys. The Red Sox finish the day with Will Middlebrooks, a guy I projected to the Twins in the first, and the Dodgers follow that up with righty Kyle Blair, who was in their mix in the first. Blair will likely need something close to $1 million in order to avoid going to college -- he's committed to San Diego.

I'm still ticked off that we let Chase Utley go to UCLA. (Although the current regime bears no blame for that.)
do you have a link to the video?
I believe he said something like it would be interesting to see if teams make runs at high ceiling guys in the early rounds tomorrow and risk losing them to college.
The phones will be busy tonight.
They start again at 8:30 a.m. PDT.
If they knew that going in, I don't see how they don't sign him. LaRoche was what, a 23rd rounder? He got his seven figures.
Van Allen ended up going to Baylor and signing with the Nationals for $170K as a fifth rounder in 2006. He's ranked as the 28th-best prospect in Washington's joke of a farm system.
Davitt ended up being drafted in the 29th round by the Angels last year. He signed with them but has not yet played a minor league game.

I didn't watch too much of the draft but I thought it worked fairly well from an entertainment viewpoint. Jim Callis seemed a little out of his element on TV but he provided solid analysis. I thought Keith Law was great. Even the Perfect Game guy (I can't remember his name) gave plenty of insight.
It sure beats Casey Stern and Darryl Hamilton.
BTW, I do understand the confusion and concern about this draft but it just bothered me that everyone wanted to create some conspiracy theory and not believe that Logan White and his team were not the ones responsible for this draft.
Those unis are awful! Gray with white numbers and black side panels. Ugh!
I noticed that too. But I guess Todd Hollandsworth's name would have required its own crawl section.
That's incorrect unless you interpret it to mean before the game on July 16, 1941
Confound that Grady Little! Doesn't he know we need manly entertainment?
Not that there's anything wrong with that
I got a "I don't roll on Shabbos" shirt.
Thanks Enders, he has a little hitch in his delivery & the uni is god awful. :o)

He thinks Kuo's only making his 2nd mlb start of his career.
That was organic.
ST. LOUIS SHORTSTOP DAVID ECKSTEIN EXTENDED HIS HITTING STREAK TO 10 GAMES WITH A SINGLE IN THE SIXTH INNING.
CORRECTION: ST. LOUIS CARDINALS SHORTSTOP DAVID ECKSTEIN DID NOT EXTEND HIS HITTING STREAK IN THE SIXTH INNING.
Did he not extend his hitting streak? Or did it just not happen in the sixth inning?
Not. Possible.
Eckstein's at bat in the sixth is described as "flying into a double play, center to first."
It looks like Eckstein flied out to center and Hamilton doubled Miles off of first. It might have been a diving catch and perhaps the wire service guy thought it was a hit.
is he in your fantasy league?
1) Zero
2) One
3) None, they don't have baserunners in forfeit games
how many more times will Martin bat? ill go with half that . . .
Make that All Star Carlos Perez
Yes, that great trade.
I've never seen Peavy drop down and throw side arm.
Jason Frasor
September 18, 2002: Sent by the Detroit Tigers to the Los Angeles Dodgers to complete an earlier deal made on July 25, 2002. The Detroit Tigers sent a player to be named later and Tom Farmer (minors) to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Hiram Bocachica. The Detroit Tigers sent Jason Frasor (September 18, 2002) to the Los Angeles Dodgers to complete the trade.
March 29, 2004: Traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Toronto Blue Jays for Jayson Werth.
We Want Kemp!

I might be wrong but he doesn't exactly throw over hand.
Kevin Brown always looked angry.
Nakamura
Edwards
Aybar
Saenz
Izturis
Betemit
LaRoche
Abreu
Martinez
Those guys immediately spring to mind
Looking at the box score, why isn't it a CS to get caught by the HBT?
Also, Carlos Perez went 3 for 3 in that game!?
I think I'll defend bluebleeder a little. I don't think Peavy drops down all the way, but I've seen him go 3/4 sometimes.
he's a lefty & throws in the mid-90's
Antonio Perez, ftw, bob. And Valdez.
Guzman
Valdez
On a CS, the runner has to be trying to advance a base. On the hidden ball trick, the runner is basically just picked off.
4ks 4bbs.
... and I do believe Bobby Witt is one... the other?
There's also a current Cub, Devil Ray (AAA) & Oak A on the list. And of course a "Special Consultant to the GM".
oops
AJ Burnett?
AJ Burnett?
It's the right boxscore. The confusion is from the way Retrosheet enters the play. Their software requires that Perez be listed as being out at second, but the PO is given to Snow.
In Perez's case, he was "out trying to stretch."
Six other pitchers have had ten or more of each in one game.
Six other pitchers have had ten or more of each in one game.
.230/.300/.380 on the year.
i'll be happy if he goes 5 innings & keeps the Pads scoreless.
My intent was not to offend those readers age 34 and up
Eight pitchers have had 10 BBs and 10 Ks in a game since 1957.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/sBy6
Actually seven pitchers, eight occurrences.
Isn't a pick off a CS?
30 strikes
31 balls.
Spoken like a Monroe High grad...
A pickoff is only a CS if the runner tries to move on to the next base. If the runner is just caught leaning, it's not a CS.
Ouch.
Good to know. :)
but we're still winning
He really is wild.
That was inside.
Probably bc he wasnt playing Peavy to pull at all.
Gonzalez overran it after it dropped in
i thought it was a million dollar pitch, but i guess it's a matter of opinion.
I feel sorry for you if you have to listen to Matt Vasgersian.
Now that is a report I like : )
are you watching the S.D. feed? cause KCAL ain't showing a "K-Zone"
Um, not the toe one. That gets stares from people.
I hope Mini-Me doesn't read this.
The biggest man alive.
Did you check the midnight screening at the Rialto a few months back?
I can suffer through him because Tony Gwynn is doing the color commentary
You really thought Peavy would pull a hard thrower like Kuo?
Here is what Tony Jackson said about today's draft.
"Sorry, I didn't see your requests until after the pow-wow with Logan, so I didn't get to ask him any of that. But I can guarantee you these were his picks. The only time I know of him EVER being told whom to draft was in 2005, when DePo strongly suggested they take Luke Hochevar in the first round ... and we all know how that turned out"
Alas, I did not. But I'm sure a lot of people went out and achieved. And proud we are of all of them.
regardless it's just nice watching our young studs succeed.
Kuo has been clocked at 93 a few times tonight and at 94 at least once. His slurve is nice and he has been effectively wild.
there gun is a few MPH faster than the KCAL gun i guess. The KCAL gun has him at 91-93.
It could be worse. Some people could be listening to Ted Leitner on the radio.
Why that man is still employed is one of life's enduring mysteries. It almost makes me feel sorry for the people of San Diego.
Good piece of Lebowski-ness for you...
The Photo of the Little Lebowski Urban Achievers is taken in front of the Jackie Robinson Community Center in Pasadena, on north fair Oaks....played basketball there as a youngster....
My review is as follows: thoroughly disappointing, only to be enjoyed/understood if completely stoned (see "Easy Rider")
FYI, I have two nicknames for Juan Pierre:
1) The Big Lebowski
2) Dude
192. Probably not. Just got back from SD after two games, late nights, and early tee times (I know, poor me!).
agreed Canuck.
vr, Xei
Word on the dori is that Saito is cleared for takeoff tomorrow night.
from what i've read he'll be back tomorrow.
Little known fact:
The Padres pitcher pronounces his last name: Peh-AH-vee
You don't need to be stoned to watch it...being from L.A helps, because the ambiance is so dead on....but it takes a few viewings...ask anyone...
BTW, Kou was a monster tonight...
Saito set for Friday: Closer Takashi Saito, who suffered a sprained left hamstring warming up on Sunday in Pittsburgh, will return to the Dodgers 'pen on Friday when the Dodgers host the Toronto Blue Jays.
I think it is much better not stoned.
Oh, and we could still win this one. Bonus.
get on, Furcal!
Nice to see Wilson B work a walk there. I hope Furcal doesn't pop up trying to hit a homerun against Peavy, cuz it's not going to happen.
vr, Xei
vr, Xei
Maybe he'll lose his cool.
Raffy!!!!!!!!! Glad to see a certain CF not leading off tonight.
Take that Peavy.
1st base open and the rook is on deck.
Sometimes the macho act doesnt work.
He wouldn't even have to pitch 3 "effective" innings anymore!

I think he'll stick around
NICE ONE by Abreu.
For me, the first time I saw it I fell in love with it. It just came out so I did not have any expectations.
I liked it when I first saw it, but I was like 16 years old...so a lot of it I did not get....
You know there's only one good high school baseball program in Southern California according to the New York Times.
In comes Chad.
In honor of tonight, I will say I was peaved.
Ahh, Jason Romano, just what were your supposed skills?
Romano's worth is measured not in VORP, but VURP.
I have Elbert on my minor league roster as well, but we all know how that one worked out
He could be playing indy ball. He's got that kind of feel to him.
Linguo dead?
Linguo is dead.
That was worth the wait.
My point is that I am more comfortable comparing players that are similar in thier attributes....Billingsly and Kuo are different types of pitchers IMO....
Pierre has credit for a game played. You just have to play in the field to qualify. It's just pinch running that doesn't extend a streak.
Is Billingsley on a pitch count?
We all remember the last time he gave up 4 runs to the Dodgers.
I'm confused
311 Me without my spacing, ooops!
I need to find a PI who specializes in finding guys like Jason Romano. I need a gumshoe wouldn't be afraid to take a slug in the shoulder, but then be right back at it. They'd likely have a girlfriend who could suck the bullet out.
Pros:
1) Increases Chad's endurance, perhaps for future starting opportunities
2) Rests the bullpen for a weekend series during which Saito is coming back
3) Allows Chad to climb the Dodger all-time save leaderboard
Billingsley could be better than Randy Wolf at the very least.
The run is credited to the guy who steps on home plate.
Does he get credit for a game played if he scores?
There are not many days that I go from lunch with Damon Lindelof (Lost) to a bomb scare that keeps me from getting back to my desk and stalls me from going to Riverside without actually preventing me from going to Riverside during rush hour(s), only to return home from Riverside in time to see the Dodgers score three seventh-inning runs off Jake Peavy. But this was one of them.
You get credit for a game played even if you never actually play in the game. If you are announced as a pinch hitter and then brought back after a pitching change, you still get credit for a game played.
But that doesn't continue a consecutive games streak.
Two different animals.
Or you can get injured while warming up on the mound.
Behold the career of Larry Yount, Robin's older brother:

Nice.
You mean the catcher?
Thanks.
"Nice to see the home plate umpire decide that the Padres don't deserve to win this game."
"All three of those runs are on the home plate umpire."
"I would strangle Vin Scully right now for his whole, 'Peavy got tired, Buddy shouldn't have left him in so long' shtick. Peavy struck out Betemit on the 2-2 and 3-2 pitches. Anthony, would it be possible to do a blog posting on how badly Jake got hosed tonite?"
Thats not to say that Wolf should be the first guy taken out to get Billingsley in. However, I think there's a clear argument to believe Billingsley is better now, and will certainly be better in the future than Randy Wolf.

Uh ohh! I need to take a walk!

I'll say..
Alas, no series comeback.
By the way, this 9th inning has been really, really weird.

With Billingsley sailing along, not sure why Grady had to overmanage?
Billingsley should have went the last 3ip tonight.
They're on a roll, we're on an anti-roll. Hopefully the tides shift starting tomorrow.
again Nomar is terrible (both on the field and his pathetic .600 ops) and grittle.. what is he thinking?
blame can be had in all directions, it's just the way it is. but this one really hurt, let's just dust off & look forward like Jon said it's a long season
No, the Dodgers mojo changed when Juan Pierre came into the game.
vr, Xei
I'm not even going to tell you how my softball games went today. I'll just say that in one game we didn't score, and I was told to shut up by my shortstop.
I also had to yell at my neighbors for having their music too loud.
Only 59 more papers to grade, then I can go to sleep and put this awful day behind me.
it's kind like when we first "do it"
Yes, we can put all the blame on Nomar. (That is, unless you want to give a small share to Kent.) Here is a list of what Broxton did wrong:
One hard-hit ball to the gap.
One walk.
1) Single to Kent.
2) E-3. Should have been 3-6-1.
3) Mental E-3. Should have been inning over on the 3-1.
After that, Broxton did what he does when it gets tight: Rear back and throw harder. What someone needs to tell him is that his pitches flatten out or something and become easier to hit.
i was reading through the threads, someone mentioned will carroll thinks billingsley is injury prone? can someone summarize what he said? thanks
But he gave up a single. Then Nomar commits error so he ruined one out. But then there is a single, another single, and a ground rule double, before he gets another out.
Why are people so sure that Nomar will improve at the plate? It's not like he's getting robbed on a lot of balls in play, or hit a lot of deep fly balls that are dying at the track. He's swinging the bat with a Juan Pierre level of weakness, and has been doing so for quite length of time now.
451 I couldn't agree more. As I related, I have Broxton on the fantasy teams and, of late, he's played a large part in blowing the team ERA for the week.
and plus we just drafted john smoltz and a loogy to come in for him in th 7th to get that tough lefty bat out!
It is a trivial matter but still.
I would like to point out again that Chad Billingsley should have ended this game. As it stands now, I would guess Bills (38 pitches) and Broxton (28 pitches) are unavailable Friday, not to mention Broxton having to deal with the "not ready for closing" questions.
who are some signabilty guys for tomorrow you want the dodgers to draft?
With tonight's 9th inning, the Dodgers ended the trip 5-5. Unacceptable.
I think Nomar will eventually improve, but he may need an extended "vacation" to spend time with the twins for a few days here.
Grrr...the Padres' postgame show are blaming this one on Broxton, saying closing is a lot different than pitching the 8th. Seems an awfully convenient excuse rather than the actual reason the Dodgers lost.
