Lowe Appreciation
2007-06-16 09:45
by Jon Weisman

Derek Lowe, now ninth in the National League in ERA+ according to Baseball-Reference.com, has just been a pleasure to watch of late. Is it a case of the Dodgers getting what they paid for, or has be become a bargain?

Since I'm heading out the door, it is for you to decide.

* * *

James Loney is at first base, batting third, according to Inside the Dodgers. Andre Ethier is in right field and Tony Abreu is at second base.

I wish this game was at night too, if only because it might get hot and my seats are bereft of shade. I also have a pretty poor day game record, as the last two day games I attended were opening day and the day we got pwned by Zambrano. Here's to breaking that streak!

I also noticed on ITD that we lead the league in strikeouts. Thats nothing to be ashamed of. Its always nice to see the CP"K" meter on tilt at the stadium.

No Kemp though. I'm still holding out hope for my 2007 Dodgers dream lineup:

Furcal
Martin
Loney
Kent
Kemp
Gonzo
Betemit
Ethier

Or Abreu batting 7th in place of Betemit or Kemp.

From watching a little bit of the US Open, I believe I would need at least 36 golf balls to have a chance of finshing the round.

I believe I could break 165.

21 Just the typical baseball slaps, they both backed up as they threw them. Jake Peavy also ejected, don't know why yet. Waiting for the Cubs ejections in addition to Lee.
2007-06-16 11:19:39
24.   Bob Timmermann
The only other Cub ejected was Gerald Perry. But since he's the hitting coach, that won't make much of a difference.

On Ducksnorts, it was reported that Peavy jumped on someone's back. But they also say Zambrano appeared to take his belt off.

They did not say what he was planning to do and you can leave that to your imagination.

29 "When do we get to have Kemp AND Loney start?"

James Loney has played 53 games in his Dodger career. Matt Kemp has played 64. The only time they have started in the same game was the meaningless 2006 regular season finale.

Over-under on the next time they start together: July 21

(I, alas, will take the over.)

Mueller in as Dodgers hitting coach

>>> As for possible concerns with Murray being unapproachable, no one was saying as much.

"I had an open door with him," Matt Kemp said. "Our communication was good. He helped me a lot mentally and with my swing. I still had to go out there and hit, that's my job. Eddie didn't hit for me."

But doing and teaching are two different things, and Murray clearly wasn't able to communicate what made him a successful hitter

Recently, Wilson Betemit and Rafael Furcal credited coach Manny Mota with helping them at the plate. >> with Murray gone, Mota is back on the travel roster. But, Mota won't be allowed to sit in the dugout on road trips. <<<

if you looked closely though derek lee's last hit grazed chris youngs jaw. nothing that would have broken it, but it definitely landed. young didnt land any. lou pinella did his best jeff van gundy impersonation, and ran out only to get knocked over in a classic domino rally fashion. that was actually one of the better bench clearing fiasco's ive seen lately.

but did you notice Derrek Lee run towards Pinella (Pinella's back) instead of around him. i'm thinking Lee didn't wanna throw any more punches sow he pretended Pinella was holding him back. it's pretty fun actually

So anyone with complete knowledge of the blackout rules, riddle me this: I click on the MLB.tv link for the SD-CHI game, and it tells me I am blacked out from watching that game. I live nowhere near either the SD or CHI blackout territories. Therefore, my conclusion is that the game must be blacked for all viewers nationwide. But if that's the case, why have a the webcast link in the first place if nobody can use it?

UC Irvine has tied ASU in the 4th at 3-3.

I like UCI's jerseys which read "Eaters" in script on the front.

And while Cal opts for caps with a "C" and UCLA uses caps with a "B", UCI has an interlocked UC on theirs.

And it's 4-3 Anteaters now.

If Scot Shields pitches a scoreless inning today, he will become the Angels alltime ERA leader for pitchers with a minimum of 500 IP.

Right now Andy Messersmith leads 2.776 to 2.778.

I think the Gonzo strikeout pitch would go along with the old saying . . "it will look like a line drive in the box score" . . it just depends how you want to look at it . . he got good results but, it wasnt a good pitch . .

You're welcome. Pitcher GS are pretty rare events and they are not distributed well. The Cardinals and Phillies have a bunch.

I believe the only NL team without one is Arizona.

Matt Verwhateversian...why is he mentioned as Scully's eventual replacement? I think I might prefer Rex Hudler. This Matt guy conveys none of the joy that Scully does. In fact, he's a downer. He's humor-impaired, and he's not a storyteller. He seems like the master of the media guide, and that's about as deep as it goes. Seriously, if it comes down to it, I hope they promote Steiner -- who I don't love, but I'm comfortable with -- rather than trying to import an alien voice like this guy.

Dodgers averaging one run per game in the Mueller era. Must be due to the switch. Ridiculous? Absolutely.
If they had scored 10 runs each of the last two days would mnay people be crediting the switch? Without a doubt.
2007-06-16 16:14:28

306 - I didn't really get the sense that people really bought into the idea that the switch was performance-related as much as personality-related. Not that that will make you feel better.

308 - Not so improbable. I was at a job once that I hated from the first month. But you try to make the best of things and hope they get better. I stayed a year and a half.

Personality or not, Eddie might have given a very good interview. And as Branch would tell you, he does have people vouching for him.

307. Doesn't stop people from making performance an issue. See all of the talk of the Indians performance after he left there. It's just that no matter what, people judge you by the results while you're there. Reality is that he should probably take credit or blame for whatever happens through the end of the year. Anyway, I'll try not to go on too much about it anymore. Hopefully I can soon root for the team I've cared about for over 30 years. Right now, not so much.

I don't think the Murray firing and the youth movement starting is an unrelated coincidence by any means. Murray has a reputation for being unapproachable and stogy, some what like Kent. Not really a bad guy- but maybe not the best coach for the kids who are taking over some playing time. We may never know exactly why it happened when it did, but it seems understandable to me. But now what do we do?

Forget about today and play tomorrow. No shame in getting shutout by the Angels, they have a deep rotation where a Cy Young two years removed is their worse pitcher. Just be glad were not facing Lackey tomorrow. Really think we'll go off on Escobar because he was so good last game that he needs to counter it with a downer game. Plus the Angels score about as many runs for him as the Dodgers do for Lowe.

I continue to get frustrated by having a runner on first and third with no outs and coming up empty. We have to push at least one home in that situation.

The Angels pen (Shields and FRod) were great. We should hit Oliver.
