Derek Lowe, now ninth in the National League in ERA+ according to Baseball-Reference.com, has just been a pleasure to watch of late. Is it a case of the Dodgers getting what they paid for, or has be become a bargain?
Since I'm heading out the door, it is for you to decide.
* * *
James Loney is at first base, batting third, according to Inside the Dodgers. Andre Ethier is in right field and Tony Abreu is at second base.

Today's 12:55 p.m. game:
The best I ever had.
I also noticed on ITD that we lead the league in strikeouts. Thats nothing to be ashamed of. Its always nice to see the CP"K" meter on tilt at the stadium.
Furcal
Martin
Loney
Kent
Kemp
Gonzo
Betemit
Ethier
Or Abreu batting 7th in place of Betemit or Kemp.
I call that a bargain.
The best I ever had.
Yes, but...who's next?
I believe I could break 165.
Is Martin starting again? I hope he sits. I need to go find the posted line-up somewhere.
You can only see that on MLB.tv or by living in Chicago.
you beat me to it Mankato, it's uncharacteristic of both players to be aggressive like that.
For most of us that fight can best be described as "On field delay."
On Ducksnorts, it was reported that Peavy jumped on someone's back. But they also say Zambrano appeared to take his belt off.
They did not say what he was planning to do and you can leave that to your imagination.
They did not say what he was planning to do and you can leave that to your imagination.
[shudder]
Or was Z looking for Barrett?
When do we get to have Kemp AND Loney start?
Where do you live?
The Dodgers-Angels are on Fox, but only in Southern California and Las Vegas. Most people get the Red Sox-Giants game.
I live in Spokane, Washington, which would explain it. It seems a little strange though, I know there are way more Dodger fans here than Red Sox or Giants. Oh well.
James Loney has played 53 games in his Dodger career. Matt Kemp has played 64. The only time they have started in the same game was the meaningless 2006 regular season finale.
Over-under on the next time they start together: July 21
(I, alas, will take the over.)
>>> As for possible concerns with Murray being unapproachable, no one was saying as much.
"I had an open door with him," Matt Kemp said. "Our communication was good. He helped me a lot mentally and with my swing. I still had to go out there and hit, that's my job. Eddie didn't hit for me."
But doing and teaching are two different things, and Murray clearly wasn't able to communicate what made him a successful hitter
Recently, Wilson Betemit and Rafael Furcal credited coach Manny Mota with helping them at the plate. >> with Murray gone, Mota is back on the travel roster. But, Mota won't be allowed to sit in the dugout on road trips. <<<

Kobe wants to be traded no matter what now.
Perhaps MLB.TV thinks you live in Southern Arizona and live in Padres blackout territory.
Maybe the entire state of New Mexico disappeared.
Have you checked recently to see if it was there?
Yep, it's still there.
"It's a Beautiful Day for a Ballgame" by the Harry Simeone Singers.
You live that close to the state border?
Please score a run already. Thank you.
what do you think Bob? it beats copying another team that's for sure.
I don't like his face.
I think that's perfectly reasonable and fair and it's true to the values that America was built on.
The Padres lineup today is evocative of the one the Angels sent out in Eric Milton's no-hitter.
I don't like his face.
sounds like a well grounded reason. :o)
I like UCI's jerseys which read "Eaters" in script on the front.
And while Cal opts for caps with a "C" and UCLA uses caps with a "B", UCI has an interlocked UC on theirs.
And it's 4-3 Anteaters now.
The Giles ball hit down the right field line could have been called a hit. He also walked five guys. Not a gem, the Pads line-up looks weak.
Now let Big Z win the game himself with a hit in the 8th.
Of course back in 1978, it was Sweet Lou sliding hard into Carlton Fisk at the plate that touched off perhaps the all-time greatest Yankee-Red Sox brawl.
The ESPN announcers don't know why the fans chant "Zot!"
Sigh.
Are you sure you don't mean Brian Giles? Marcus has a fairly standard jock face. But Brian has that unbearable eager-beaver-wide-eyed-wonderboy look.
Kenny Rogers threw a perfect game against the Angels. But they had a better lineup in that one.
74
No, I specifically dislike Marcus Giles's face. Like many of my dislikes its pretty much irrational.
Soriano!
Pie!
Izturis (d'oh!)
Big fan of the suspended game, eh?
are you watching the MLB.TV feed? cause FOX says he's throwing 87-88.
Ba-Loney. Too high!
Ah, yes- well that is better for sure. Maybe it will pick up!
Stupid Fox Saturday game blocks all other broadcasts.
https://griddle.baseballtoaster.com/archives/698139.html
Same program in SF... oh well, at least we get Barry's ugly mug in HD.
it was making me feel like i was drunk, but i don't drink anymore.
But that's because Loney had an easier throw being left-handed.
The last pitch's location by Schmidt was about at the cutout of the grass.
Fox has an exclusive window now. You can listen if you want on Gameday.
Michael Milken handled the play-by-play the last inning.
But the HOF Braves third baseman was Eddie Mathews.
MLB.com owns all the rights to internet broadcasts of major league games.
You need to drive to Las Vegas.
It's Joe Girardi.
"Crazy Eyes" Loney
"Boom Boom Boom" Betemit
"Smallest head biggest heart" Pierre
"Smacktalk" Furcal
"Whitest Teeth in baseball" Gonzo
"Don't call me Bobby" Abreu
"Charlie Brown" Schmidt
Has anyone else ever seen Boom Boom outside of DT?
Losing? He's been wobbly all year.
Still excellent for a catcher, although yes, perhaps more mortal than golden god right now. I expect Martin will get another hot streak going soon.
WWSH
It seems Gameday has a very "slow" gun. this kind of explains many things.
Looks like a "Manny bomb".
WWSH
WWSH
nah, i'm right there with you WWSH. Ever the optomistic we are.
This is definitely something I should know, but don't. Who was the Dodger pitcher who grannied in 1961?
WWSH
Don Drysdale at the Coliseum against Don Nottebart of the Braves.
A few steps short of the wall, but Matthews had it all the way.
Yep--I also just like Nomar as a player. Always have, even the weird and more elaborate AB routine he had at Boston.
WWSH
WWSH
Thanks Bob. Well, since it's a day game, we can't fantasize about it going out, if only it had been a day game.
WWSH
i meant Matthew Jr. knows what he's doing out there. i was watching the t.v. instead of the screen while i typed that.
Groan Well, Bills looks ready to go, at least.
WWSH
WWSH
WWSH
I hope not. I don't want another repeat of what happened in Nomo's last year.
WWSH
WWSH
Corona? He'd be better off with a Modelo Especial or Negro Modelo. Better ingredients and no skunky off tastes typical of Mexican beers. He would't even need a lime.
& leave it to Nomar to mess it up.
how many walks does he have this year?
What is this fool talking about?
understood Rob. :o)
Billingsley is warming up.
When I listen to Steiner and Monday, I feel I have no idea what's going on in the game. Dr. Laura would tell me to ask what is wrong with me that I am not able to understand what's going on.
The past tense of "hang" is "hung" unless you are referring to receiving the same fate as Saddam Hussein.
That's what my style guide tells me.
yup, golden opportunity wasted by the Dodgers.
I think Seanez warms up faster and is better for situations with runners on base because he won't come out walking the house.
or maybe i'm just being biased & don't wanna give credit were credit is do.
it was a straight hanging changeup
Beimel's "Crazy Eyes Loney" was the best. Loney has one of those old-time cartoon faces.
I wonder what nickname Beimel would give for himself.
"Can't Bring Home to Mama" Beimel
"Jiffy Lube" Beimel
"Boozin" Beimel
"Scum of the Earth" Beimel
"Molly Hatchet Roadie" Beimel
"You Have the Right to Remain Silent" Beimel
"Touch My Sister and I'll Kill You" Beimel
Isn't throwing a pitch over the plate that the batter is not expecting a good pitch? The result is the important thing.
that's what i thought also, it didn't look fast enough to be a fastball.
It seemed pretty obvious he was going to hit trouble, and I figured if it meant less than 4 runs, it would be a bargain.
i'll just say Weaver got a way with one & Gonzalez is a domie for not pulling the trigger on a borderline pitch with a full count.
[chuckling]
Right now Andy Messersmith leads 2.776 to 2.778.
I think the Gonzo strikeout pitch would go along with the old saying . . "it will look like a line drive in the box score" . . it just depends how you want to look at it . . he got good results but, it wasnt a good pitch . .
You're welcome. Pitcher GS are pretty rare events and they are not distributed well. The Cardinals and Phillies have a bunch.
I believe the only NL team without one is Arizona.
that just proved Russell has a canon arm. wow.
If you bump the threshold up to 1000 IP, it would be Dean Chance.
Furcal - .657
Pierre - .653
Nomar - .466
Kent - .615
Gonzo - .865 (super-steady all year)
Martin - .615
Abreu - .753
Ethier - .661
Betemit - 1.167 (only 18 at-bats)
Kemp - 1.147 (17 at-bats)
Loney - 1.200 (10 at-bats)
Hartzell was pitching in the original configuration of Anaheim Stadium, where nobody could score.
that's a known fact, i just wish he sported a Dodger Uni. i'm a huge fan of his.
And who is Dean Chance's closest comp, with a similarity score of 948? Andy Messersmith! To quote Dave Barry, "I am not making this up."
Chance: 128-115, 2.92, 1534 K, 739 BB in 2147 1/3 IP
Andy M: 130-99, 2.86, 1625 K, 831 BB in 2230 1/3 IP
Scareduck, just curious, why would you despise Steiner? He seems about as far from despiseable as a guy can get.
Yes.
Vasgersian is mentioned as Scully's eventual replacement by Tom Hoffarth of the Daily News, who seems to think that Vasgersian is the bee's knees.
I suppose he would help increase interest in the Dodgers in Glendale.
The first time in recorded history such a preference has occurred. Hudler is tolerable, sometimes enjoyable, but he babbles a good 30-50% of the time.
Tomorrow's game should be interesting: who will score first?
If they had scored 10 runs each of the last two days would mnay people be crediting the switch? Without a doubt.
Personality or not, Eddie might have given a very good interview. And as Branch would tell you, he does have people vouching for him.
I continue to get frustrated by having a runner on first and third with no outs and coming up empty. We have to push at least one home in that situation.
The Angels pen (Shields and FRod) were great. We should hit Oliver.
