Is All-Time Los Angeles Dodger Home Run Leader Eric Karros Bigger Than a Bread Box?
2007-08-15 08:41
by Jon Weisman

Much bigger, it turns out. In fact, a bread box isn't even the proper unit of measurement ...

By the way, when it says, "You Are Invited," Eric's just talking to me. Not you. Me. Got it? Don't want any of you riff-raff tripping and breaking the nice TV.

103", that's like 8'6"... I don't think I'd ever say this, but that TV might might just be too big.

Who am I kidding, I want one, desperately.

Ken Crane's can sell a 103-inch plasma television, but can't get anything better than an at-least-10-year-old photo of the Big A???

From the press release:

"Delivery is a delicate process, and Panasonic uses a specialized lift to remove the TV from packaging following a personalized site-check by Panasonic to determine wiring needs and whether the location can support the weight of the giant TV. It retails for $70,000, plus delivery and installation."

Eric Karros is about 72% of a 103-inch plasma television.

Well, 103" is actually 8'7", but I think the marginal difference at that size is hard to determine at that size.

The 103" screen will also be the right size for me to display the digital photos my brother keeps sending me.

He keeps sending the same set and they keep getting larger and larger.

A plasma? Seriously? The things are energy pigs. I recently did a (very!) quick tour of some of the more popular plasma and LCD TVs out there, and it's not particularly close:

And then there's gas leakage. Hint: how many other kinds of TVs have a time-to-half-brightness specification?

8 - in fact, this bad boy requires a 240 VAC circuit. It draws an eye-popping 1,550 watts when turned on.

So if the TV is 103" diagonal, and the ratio is 16:9, what is the height of that TV?

Do I use Pythagorian Theorum? a2 + b2 = c2, where C is 103, and b=9/16a.

Does Eric Tracy have any job other than doing the voices for Ken Crane's? He still introduces himself as "Eric Tracy" on every ad, as if I'm supposed to know who he is. But would anyone who arrived in LA after about 1990 recognize his voice?

I think one per wall would do nicely. Forget Surround Sound -- I want Surround Sight.

Plus twelve seconds after turning them on, you get the festive sound of transformers bursting like celebratory fireworks across the Basin. Mmmmm.

10 It should be about 89.8" x 50.5", or roughly 7'6" x 4'2.5".

I determined that by (16x)^2 + (9x)^2 = (103)^2

Don't make the Pythagorean calculation harder than it needs to be. A right triangle with sides of 16 and 9 will have a hypotenuse of approximately 18.358. The ratios are still the same for a larger triangle. 103 inches is 5.611 times bigger than 18.358, which means that's how much bigger the sides of the TV are as well. It should have sides of 50.5 and 89.8 inches (approximate) plus the extra inches for the enclosure.

8 Yeah, but many people agree that plasmas look better than any other kind of HDTV (except rear projection CRT's, but that's another beast entirely). Of course the performance comes at a price (half-lives and such). Although, I thought for similarly sized displays, plasmas aren't much higher in power consumption than LCD's these days. I could be wrong; I haven't researched plasmas or LCD's heavily.

Actually my electricity bill was LOWER after upgrading to my Panasonic 42" Plasma. Before this I had a Sony CRT TV
