There's an argument to be made that Dodger fans should be rooting for Arizona tonight against Atlanta.

1 And just to be clear that argument would be, "A team that starts Olmedo Saenz, Mark Sweeney, Shea Hillenbrand and Brett Tomko on an occassional basis has no business chasing the a team like the D-Backs from 6 games back with 40 to play."

There's also an argument to be made that Dodger fans should cut and run to the D'backs bandwagon. While there's still time. Hurry!

Hmph. If the D-Backs were Tucson's home-town team I might consider it, but Phoenix? Ha!

You think SF has it in for LA, you should measure Tucson's antipathy towards that town up north.

11 While it is too soon to call the season a wash, keep in mind the L.A. Dodgers don't have much of a history of bouncing back late. Only three times have the Dodgers come back from a deficit of more than two games after August 10th. Only in 1983 have the Dodgers mounted what could be described as an epic comeback.

I'd give a more up to date prediction of doom, but the site I use for these things is down.

Watching the Mets/Nats game. Mota comes in and they refer to him as "part of the what were you thinking trade with Los Angeles." Can amyone today really think that was not a very good move. One would think Don Sutton would be aware that Brad Penny is a top three Cy Young contender this year.

BTW, whatever happened to Bill Murphy?

And the Giants win! Sorry, but I'm on their bandwagon today, as I picked up Mr. Cain from the free agent pool in one fantasy league as I needed a W and I otherwise have one Brad Hennessey slotting in as that SP but 4th closer in that other league. So for today at least, go Giants!

Enders's stats on tonight's umpire have me pretty worried about Chad's performance. I recall other games this year where the umpire had a small zone and it really did not bode well for young Billingsley. It helps that Morales has control problems as well, so we may be in store for a long game.

Here's another idea (although clearly too late at this point): why not let Furcal sit out a couple weeks, a month, or whatever, until he gets his ankles right.

It seems like all season they've been saying he just has to play through pain this year, so don't expect him to play well.

Furry's well above Replacement level. He's sporting a 7.3 WARP3, right now. It's a down year, no question, and most of his WARP comes from his glove, which hasn't seemed to suffer at all. But even in VORP, he's above replacement level at 11.6, 19th for all MLB shortstops.

The Phillies lose. The Dodgers need to win and have the Padres lose also to pick up ground in the wild card.

Mathematically, the Dodgers are still in charge of their own destiny for the playoffs. They can win all their remaining games and clinch a playoff spot, regardless of what the teams ahead of them do.

Hmm... 19th out of how many regulars? That sounds pretty average. I guess my point is, a couple weeks without Furcal, even if it means suffering through a replacement, would be well worth it if we get a healthy Furcal the rest of the way.

Again, the argument makes less sense as the season goes on, but they've been saying all along that his ankles won't get better while he's playing.

2007-08-18 19:05:48
44.   regfairfield
Biggest comebacks after August 18th into playoff spots over the last few years:

2006: San Diego (one game)
2005: Yankees (1.5 games)
2004: Astros (six games)
2003: Oakland (four games)
2002: Giants (four games)
2001: Cardinals (1.5 games)
2000: None
1999: D'Backs (1.5 games)
1998: Texas (1.5 games)
1997: Astros (1.5 games)

Four times (the Yankees came back in one of these years too) in the last 10 years has a team sat mroe than 1.5 games out of a playoff spot and made the playoffs.

I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just very hard to make up deficits at this point in the season, as close as things may seem.

But since it's August 18, the S.S. Rest Rafael Furcal's Ankle has already set sail and is headed around the Cape of Good Hope filled with whale oil, rum, and Nomar Garciaparra's extra base hitting.

43- I didn't limit it to regulars. He's 19th out of 53 qualifiers. Furry's OPS+ is 95, so he's below average, but close. If Juan Pierre were having a year equivalent to Furcal, he'd be Vernon Wells.

43 Average and replacement level are very different things. Of course, I'd guess Hu can play above average defense while giving some offense, and probably wouldn't hurt us at all.

Sullivan was not caught stealing however. He doesn't get a stolen base attempt.

As long as people are talking about Lambo, I read an article at scout.com about the guy. Logan White is quoted as saying, "He reminds me of James Loney with the way he swings a bat. And, like James, he can really pick at first base." Also like Loney, Lambo has a strong arm, so the Dodgers are playing him in right field to see if he can stick there. On the issue of Lambo's character faults, Lambo says he got in with a bad crowd but eventually cleaned up his act, and White says, "He made some kid mistakes and I believe in second chances." According to Lambo, "I owe everything to Logan White. He's given me my chance and I don't want to ever do anything that would make him sorry."

In my mind the SD anouncers are far worse. What is apparent to just about all of the Fox announcers from other teams they make way too many generalizations. Colorado tonight almost refered to Loney has a fringe player. "The Dodgers are rotating first baseman" The San Diego folks besides being blatenly homer's never have figured out that Furcal's home run production is down this year because of his injury. I think everyone in LA has long accepted that fact.

Franklin Morales has looked very good tonight, no doubt. BUT we deserve a dash of cold water to the face for not even seeing if he could be wild. This is a guy in his first major league start with at least minor control troubles in the minors. 4 batters in the 1st see 9 total pitches? That can not be the team approach to this pitcher, and either Grady or Mueller need to answer this question. Again, Morales is looking pretty special tonight, not afraid of the curve/change at all, but we have to test him a little more than this.

183.   gpellamjr

185.   gpellamjr
184 "Go soak your feet" would be imperative.

An expression of that in the indicative would be "You gotta go soak your feet."

Everyone else, avert your eyes!

Orig. the past tense of OWE v. (see also discussion s.v.).
Like other Primitive Germanic preterite-present verbs, OWE v. originally formed its past tense with a dental element suffixed immediately to the stem: cf. Old Frisian {amac}chte, Old Saxon {emac}hta, Old Icelandic átta, Old Swedish aatte (Swedish (now regional) åtte), Old Danish ate, ottæ (early modern Danish aatte), Gothic aihta. This continues in Middle English, early inflected as a normal past tense with 2nd singular -est, plural -en, later -e, but frequently uninflected towards the end of the period. 'Double' past tense forms, with the regular past tense suffix added (see {delta} forms) occur occasionally from the 15th cent.
In Middle English, in main verb senses (see branch I.), a past participle use develops, which after the 17th cent. is restricted to Scots. Additionally in these senses in Scots, the word shows a tendency to develop present tense and present participle inflections, reflecting the newer present tense uses, while retaining the uninflected past tense form for past tense uses.
In modal verb use (see branch II.), following the development of present senses, inflected present tense forms are attested from the 16th cent. onwards; the evidence is sparse, suggesting that this is a sporadic independent development in dialects of different regions and periods. On the other hand the development of a past participle and infinitive use in conjunction with other auxiliaries in branch II. occurs late, but establishes itself strongly in British and U.S. dialects from the 19th cent. onwards.
Ought remains the ordinary past tense of owe throughout Middle English. Its development of present and future reference in modal use can be compared with MUST v.1 3. This probably accounts for the emergence of the new regular past tense of owe in late Middle English.
Ought, in standard English, has many of the characteristics of the other modal auxiliaries, notably the lack of inflections and tense distinction and the absence of the do construction in forming negatives and interrogatives. The main exception to this is the retention of the to-infinitive. The construction with bare infinitive arises early in Middle English and survives to the present day, in modern English especially in non-assertive contexts (compare NEED v.2 10c), but this has never become standard, perhaps owing to the influence of the parallel deontic have to (see HAVE v. 7c). In common with must (see MUST v.1 7), the negative that syntactically modifies ought semantically modifies the following infinitive.

If you let Olmedo hit the first time, I guess you are going to the second time. I would fire Grady twice after the game
2007-08-18 22:03:48
242.   ucladodger
Saenz not doing anything productive was the most predictable outcome of any game I've watched this year. He just cannot hit right handers to save his life, and loney is in the dugout with a bat in his hand. smart move, Grady.

Also, why is Russell batting behind Olmedo tonight? Fine, get him in against a lefty, but put Russell ahead of him and take him out once the lefty is removed from the game.

2007-08-18 22:04:05

242 At this point in his career, Loney doesn't have enough experience to be consistent. With Saenz, you know you'll get a professional at bat every time up. Loney makes too many youthful mistakes, and, because he's young, he can't hit the curve ball.

In the Vancouver area, there aren't even crickets in the suburban areas. You have to go way out to farm country to find them, so I have always thought of them as a rural phenomenon (not that I have spent much time thinking about them at all). What about cockroaches? Are those found in L.A.? We don't have them in Vancouver either. Toronto and Montreal have them, and from American televison shows I gather New York is inundated with them, but I have not heard about them being in Los Angeles.

Well lets see. They'd never have a pitcher come in to catch. Tomko would prolly play the outfield if a position player goes down. Because Pierre and Gonzo are left handed, that would force Kemp to the infield either as the catcher or third base moving Hillenbrand to catcher. Thats why I say Hillenbrand.

464 No, I totally agree. He gave it a game effort, and I almost felt sorry for him out there. I just don't think he should be on the team at all. Or, as I said previously, that they should add an extra pitcher ({cough} Meloan {cough}). It's too bad Saito wasn't available tonight.

As much as I wanted Loney to start over Saenz, he didn't do all that much when he did come in - though he did collect a walk. Tomorrow he's gotta be starting. I'd assume Lieberthal too - except Penny absolutely loves throwing to Martin.

478 So I guess that takes Chad off the hook?

Look, all these stats are great but numbers don't help when you have to start going to your pen in the 6th inning everytime you start. And none of those other guys threw the pitch that their pitcher in his first MLB at bat singled in the second run.

481 Exactly how many superior talents are available right now, Meloan, okay, if you could by usage, he would pitch as the last the guy in the pen so unless you get an extra inning game, he's not pitching ahead of Proctor, Beimel, Broxton and Saito. So how valuable is that?

Who else? LaRoche, yes, but he's hurt. Abreu, according to Boras, he was hurt until this week so how many games does that impact. I'd take Delwyn Young over Olmedo but again, sure Olmedo played today but he's not playing that much.

The superior talent is here. Now are there some intriguing guys like James McDonald, yep, though he must be approaching his career high in innings pitched by now.

I hope the next few weeks bring up the guys on the 40 man roster but its just not true that we have tons of superior talent biding their time in the minors.

Given the flyout to Kemp that was inches from being a double (and a foot from a homer) and a 10th baserunner allowed in 21 batters, right after allowing Sullivan's first home run, I don't know how likely the quality start was. I love Chad, but this wasn't one of his best games. He was removed early not because of pitch counts, but because he wasn't pitching that well.

It was a team loss. Three-fourths of the infield combined to go 0 for 18 with two walks. At the same time, the Dodgers showed resiliency - four double-plays, including the great one in the 11th.

Unfortunately, Hernandez shouldn't be on the roster - he simply can't be counted on for a scoreless inning, much less too.

All that being said, Jayson Addcox of MLB.com wrote, "According to Little, Billingsley was being watched closely because he had gone over the 100-pitch mark in his last four outings." So they were being protective.

I know Hillenbrand is a free agent (the Angels bought out his 08 option) but I fear he'll be brought back in some capacity next year.

This guy whined about not playing everyday in Anaheim, and it'll only get worse here with Loney, Nomar and LaRoche fighting for 3 spots.

Man, what can I say that hasn't been said here already? I know a lot of people here are hesitant to beat up on Hernandez, but let's face it, he's just one of thoe old timers that doesn't want to retire but should have. Seriously, he's taking whatever legacy he had and throwing it down the tubes by making a fool out of himself. I hate to see people like this do that to themselves. He just doesn't have the stuff anymore and the second they brought him out I said to my buddy, "the game is over." The fact of the batter is, it wasn't just tonight...EVERY time they bring Hernandez out he gives it up and needs to be rescued.

Last night was a MUST WIN for the Dodgers, one of the few chances they're going to get between now and the end of the regular season to make some good ground in the wild card. What are the odds the EVERYONE who needs to lose will lose again today?

Of course, you can't blame Hernandez completely (though I still think they should have just brought Saito out to try to take care of the 14th since he had only pitched for 2/3 an inning the past two nights but that's just me). Frankly, Hillenbrand is a huge mistake and had he not been a moron and tried to move his slow (self) to second in the 11th perhaps the momentum that Fucal had created with that INCREDIBLE 'run-of-the-mii' 6 - 2 - 5 doubleplay wouldn't have been lost.

Also, what the heck was Grady thinking starting Saenz instead of Loney????????

Another depressing and demoralizing end to a short-lived Dodger winning streak in a typically rollercoaster Dodger season I guess.

Incidentally, I believe Saenz batting average is around .165 now....why start someone batting below the Mendoza Line? Does Grady want to be 'traded' too? ;)

Hernandez is doing nothing more to his legacy than any of the hundreds of great players who wouldn't go away from the game without a fight. It is not his fault that someone wants to pay him thousands of dollars to be what he is. In the end, he will be remembered for having over 300 saves, not for a few weeks with the Dodgers.

Ever since the Dodgers signed Hernandez, I have felt Meloan deserved a promotion before he did. But I'm sure there are some Dodger fans out there who got promotions that they didn't deserve. I doubt that they all turned those promotions down.

Maybe this perspective might revive our spirits. If the Dodgers were in first place with 40 games to go would anybody believe the Dodgers had a lock on the Division? I wouldn't feel comfortable with a 6 game lead at this point.

476 484 Boy, you guys are touchy. I know we win some we lose some. In THIS particular loss, the combo of Furcal, Pierre, Kent, Saenz, and Gonzalez were extra bad. I mistakenly didn't count Hillenbrand because he didn't register in my min as a Dodger vet. But, yes, he is a veteran. Point still stands, when 5 players in your lineup go 1-27, it's not good whether they are rookies, or veterans. Better?

Great comments. I think what frustrates me and perhaps others is the fact that the Dodgers will take a flyer on a aging vet, rather than risk some development cost at the major league level with a younger player. How much better can Meleon be in 2008, if he could have been around for 2 months rather than a one month call up in September?...In watching all of last night's game I almost saw it as a metaphor for the season. Kemp the rook hits a bomb for the lead-the good side of the prospects, Billingsly struggles, and we don't get any runs until the 7th with help from Colorado-the offense, Martin being Martin and keeping us in the game. And no Nomar magic this year! One game does not make a season

507 No, but that's because I've been trained to accept tragedy by this team.

One team has overcome this big of a deficit on August 18th in the last 10 years, no team has been as far back as 7.5 games and made it in the same timespan.

Ned has the D-Backs and the Dodgers right where he wants them. He knows that the Diamondback youth will fold starting anyday now and his veterans on the Dodgers will keep them steady and calm right to the finish.

Ned knows that if he had a big lead the Dodgers would rest the veterans and they would get rusty for the playoffs. If the D-backs were trailing by 5 or more games the pressure would be off their kids and they might thrive down the stretch.

He has his plan and it is working.

506 -- Right now, I am really more upset about the Dodgers' treatment of Eric Hull than I am of their handling of Meloan. Meloan has pitched in 10 games in Triple A. Compare his stats with those of Hull's last 10 games for Vegas:

Meloan:

14.0 IP, 11 H's, 2 HR's, 6 BB's, 13 K's

Hull:

12.1 IP, 6 H's, 0 ER's, 4 BB's, 20 K's

Hull has really been dominating in a very tough pitching environment, one that can be tougher than what a pitcher faces in the majors, as Eric Stults keeps proving. And unlike Meloan, Hull is on the 40-man roster. Hull is to Meloan as Stults is to Billingsley: the younger guys with the superior stuff likely have more promising MLB futures, but the older guys with more pitchability can do a good job right now if only given a chance.

But will someone get Eric Byrnes to fold?

He's out of the lineup today, so his awe-inspiring talent (to Shimmin) is not being used now.

I think the NL wild card contenders will be sorted out after this week. The Phillies are playing the Dodgers and Padres and by next Sunday, one of those three teams should be out of contention.

521, 526 - anyone see the article on Yogi Berra's back up in the Times a couple days ago? The guy basically played 15 games a year for the length of his career but won 6 world titles. Kind of like being Joe Montana's back up during most of the 80s. Or Tom Brady's now.

That was Charlie Silvera. And back then, teams would carry a third catcher, so the Yankees had someone who usually played even less. It was Ralph Houk most of the time.

The Mets two catchers now are Mike DeFelice and Old Friend Sandy Alomar.

517, others==IIRC, Hull had one bad outing as a Dodger.

It apparently was enough to land him in the doghouse and make Grady very leery.

This management team is much more likely to forgive a woofer of an outing in a proven veteran (see Hernandez--unfortunately). I think management more or less EXPECTS young players to fail; Grady talks about expecting inconsistency from them. To an extent, he's right.

But I prefer my inconsistency--if it must be--come from players with upside. Mediocre veterans on the downside usually can't be counted on for much except mediocrity--consistent mediocrity, but mediocrity nonetheless.

Mediocrity won't make up deficits.

Et bienvenue from the land of Thermidor!
Thermidor was one of the months of the French Revolution(they tried to change everything - even the months of the year!)
There was a coup d'état during the month of Thermidor by moderate revolutionary elements in 1794 (or 1795)?) against the most radical elements of the French Revolution (Robespierre and company)-
