Martin Released (No, Not Him)
2008-03-10 08:26
by Jon Weisman

While Clayton Kershaw and Blake DeWitt were moved up to major league camp (though neither is supposed to make the Opening Day roster), the Dodgers reassigned Mario Alvarez, James McDonald, Jon Meloan and Justin Orenduff to minor league camp and released Tom Martin.

The latter move removes one hurdle in the way of Hong-Chih Kuo making the team in the bullpen, where Joe Torre seems determined to slot him. It strikes me as similar to the final season of Darren Dreifort, when the Dodgers determined that Dreifort getting up to pitch more often but for less duration would be easier than having him try to go as a starting pitcher every five days - not that Dreifort and Kuo are the same pitcher.

  • Tony Abreu was specifically counseled by Joe Torre to prioritize getting well, writes Diamond Leung of the Press-Enterprise.

  • Takashi Saito had a pain-free bullpen session, reports Ken Gurnick at MLB.com He is on track to see game action this coming weekend, but Opening Day readiness is not a guarantee.

  • Yankee ace closer Mariano Rivera credits Steve Howe for mentoring him as a young pitcher, writes Tyler Kepner of the New York Times.

  • Yahoo! Sports gets the Dodgers who were in the now-famous Baseball Boogie video to recall the experience. (The video has been circulating since November, though it appears people are still discovering it.)

Yahoo Sports calls the clip "the best spring highlight to date."

Seriously though, if he's throwing 96 MPH at the knees, then throws that, how can anyone hit it? It's not like Zito has that fastball he can mix up his curveball with.

The reaction from Vin was classic. Thanks for the post!

Well LaRoche had surgery. They stuck 2 pins in his thumb to reattach the the ligaments, they're coming out in 3 weeks than it's 8-10 weeks plus. All in all the pitching has been good lately, a nice fight for the 5th spot. It looks like the kids will backup the vets, not some strangers with more experience so I'm satified at the moment.
