Nomar Garciaparra suffers a strained abdomen in the ninth inning, and with Blake DeWitt now in the minors and Chin-Lung Hu already in the game at second base, Russell Martin returns to play third base, his original professional position.
Martin played 40 games at third base for the Gulf Coast League Dodgers in 2002, then had one more game in 2003 in A ball as he converted to catcher.
On the first pitch with Martin at third base, Gary Bennett didn't get under Takashi Saito's pitch, allowing it past him for a game-tying passed ball.
Earlier in the game, Andruw Jones left the game with a contusion after fouling a ball off himself. If this game were to go enough, people might see Fernando Valenzuela back in the outfield.
Update: After tying a Los Angeles Dodger record by reaching base in his first six plate appearances, Martin wins it in the 13th with a sacrifice fly.
My first large-thread LAT! Hurrah.
Am I correct in thinking herges is the second player ever to play for call five modern NL west teams?
Now we've seen it all.

Mainly because they were starting to get sleep-deprived. It's 11:04.

Except Holliday followed Helton, not Hawpe. Holliday's #'s against Saito, prior to the DP: 1.319 OPS, in 2 more PA (9) than Helton.
vr, Xei
Not if someone goes on the DL.

... I remember Fernando playing 1B in the 20-some-inning game at Houston in 1989. The winning hit was just over his outstretched glove.
Eddie Murray was playing third and Jeff Hamilton was pitching. And Hamilton pitched pretty well; struck out Ken Caminiti as I recall.
Still, I'm impressed.

Dear God, I am SOOOO glad I'm not at the stadium for this one.
vr, Xei
Or else they just hate us.
Beimel pitching the 10th?
vr, Xei
I believe Brad Penny will be pinch hitting next inning for the pitcher.
vr, Xei
Mark Sweeney raises hand.
Most people here get more disturbed arguing amongst themselves about Andruw Jones.
I'm telling you, only Kemp bats in the 10th. Believe it.

Right?
Them Rockies are the reigning NL Champs!
(Okay, I'm starting to get desperate.)
Right?
I don't want to make waves. And this has been a fun (if really weird) game.
vr, Xei
My predictive powers have proven to be fraudulent. My head is hanging in shame.
Andy LaRoche - one game in LF
James Loney - one game in RF (that didn't go so well)
Wilson Valdez - two games in CF
Wilson Betemit - one game in RF
In 2005, Norihiro Nakamura played games at second and short.
Adrian Beltre played seven games at short in his Dodgers career.
Hope to wake up tomorrow morning to find out that the Dodgers somehow squeaked it out.
vr, Xei
Chan Ho's at least facing the worst part of the Rox lineup.
135 No hard feelings, honestly.
Taveras, Pierre, Podsednik
It's a rogues' gallery out there.
OPS is overrated.
So you're telling me that losing your starting job to Darin Erstad is not a good sign for your career?
12 innings is the cutoff. The game would have started earlier: 6 or 6:30.
LoDuca scored the winning run in the 11th.

... I take it you've never had seats next to opposing team's fans at Dodger Stadium. It's not that big of a deal, really.

Not a fan.
Strained left abdomen for Nomar.
Just a thought.
Why wouldn't you be a fan of that?
Motion seconded.

The 2008 Dodgers, sponsored by the Salvador Dali Collection.
So how quickly can Blake DeWitt get back up to LA?
I think it was recorded as a 2 for 1 with "Every kiss begins with Kay".
The Dodgers won the game 22-4 against the Phillies.
It was the Angel Tim Belcher.
vr, Xei
Both on the 1st pitch too..
I still don't understand why Hu can't play third. Is there some law against it? I mean tonight things got too whacked out, but in general, can't he pitch in at third?
vr, Xei
vr, Xei
Pierre-Hu-Furcal..
Martin's played 4 innings of defense at 3b, hasnt touched the ball yet..
vr, Xei
Et tu tu, Andrew?
Poor BH is still there :-/
On August 6, 1982, the Dodgers were caught stealing three times in one inning by Bruce Benedict of Atlanta.
Sigh. It's up to Raffy. Otherwise someone may need to wake me when this one's over, too.
And here comes lucky 13.
Doug Padilla is covering the game tonight for the DN. Tony was there "working ahead on other stuff", but I wonder if he just left already.
How about them 76ers?
Or not. After that strikeout, maybe we should call it a night.
If this was a UCLA basketball game, people would be making a huge deal out of that and want that man banned from the stadium and possibly beaten to death with pillows.
A Dodger pitcher will bat 3rd in the bottom of the 13th.

"Mark Sweeney is off to a slow start, as he only has one pinch hit in 14 at-bats. So Torre said he and bench coach Bob Schaefer would speak to him about getting him a start sometime likely at first base to give James Loney his first day off"
So now we know Park isn't pitching on Sunday. I was hoping for a surprise one game Kershaw call up for that one.
vr, Xei
Amazing! Batters now down to .293/.388/.534 against Park.
Bison needs to end it, our this game will go on forever.
There were three runners caught stealing, but not all of them were out. Steve Sax and Ken Landreaux were thrown out, but Dusty Baker was safe when Glenn Hubbard dropped the ball on the tag.
The Dodgers still won the game.
Can't they just call it a draw, give them each a point like they do in soccer?
But Sekata never faced the Dodgers. He almost did in the 1983 World Series, but the pesky Phillies got in the Dodgers' way.
Still no action.
vr, Xei
Maybe your friend was an avid Easton user.
This time, it counts.
I need to sleep.
No one hit a ball to him the whole game.
I wanna see Park drive in the winning run.
329 Possible walk off heros: Chan Ho Park, Slappy, Hu
So it's gonna be up to Russell, our new third baseman.
vr, Xei
Or will Russ have so many such games that it's a fruitless effort to classify each one so generically?
April 16 when Milton Bradley did so.
Golden God...
And "Battlestar Galactica" hasn't even aired yet for Linkmeister.
Now I feel guilty.
Sorry Woden, but it was fun having ya here.
Take care all, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!
I was in Chinatown at an art event then dinner at Full House, and a bunch of guys wandered in to eat that had obviously been at the game. I checked my phone to see the score and was surprised to see that Saito was pitching in the 9th. Saw the blown save on my phone (and the note that Martin had gone in at 3B), then got home to see the last 3 innings. So freaking glad they pulled it out.
Hasta luego.
And good news, the NFL Draft is later this year so y'all can sleep in.
I can't wait to be disappointed tomorrow.
No.
I believe Loney got intentionally walked and Martin hit a sac fly to right.
And all the sudden I see Martin going into the dugout, and I'm thinking, "Did they boot Martin?" Only to see him playing third. Eventually, there's a group of about 10 people around the tv watching the extra innings (mind you, live band in one room, dj in another). I get talking to a girl who seems to know quite about about the Dodgers (she had the important stats down, ages and marital status). When she mentions that she's got season tickets, I can only ask if she's single. Then she says, "Pierre's a bum." And my only response is, "I'd marry you right now."
She and her two friends left to go see the band and missed the end of the game... I couldn't find them later to tell them what happened.
The good:
1. A very interesting discussion with Greg Brock about the run of presidents between Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln. I'll just say two words, James Polk.
2. I got another Torre bobblehead because someone left without it.
3. Russell Martin's last at bat, nice fly ball to right, Hawpe had to field flat footed so that gave the Bison all the time he needed to score.
The Bad:
1. Inability to shut the door with 2 outs for Kuroda.
2. Nomar's range or lack thereof.
3. Andruw not taking himself when he first got hurt.
The weird and wacky:
1. Note to Todd Helton, you are not stealing 3B, why were you picked off.
2. Park and Bennett played big roles tonight.
3. Saito has not been able to smile recently.
I'm a huge Loney fan; I just find it curious that one kid gets harped on endlessly for his baserunning while another one who's even worse gets a continual free pass.
One could argue that none of Colorado's first four runs would have scored tonight if we'd had a real third baseman playing third.
And I allow my boy to root for Barry Bonds, without giving him any hint of the controversy that surrounds him.
Here's to Dodger Thoughts!
The other 15 are girls...?
