Rafael Furcal - .612 Slugging!
2008-05-03 16:55
by Jon Weisman

Come on!

  • Clayton Kershaw pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball in front of Ned Colletti on Friday.

  • Larry Harnisch's Daily Mirror blog at the Times displays a page from the January 18, 1958 sports section that announced the Coliseum as the Dodgers' first official Los Angeles home.

Hey, look - Walt Torrence just made a basket with 35 seconds left to lift John Wooden's Bruins over USC. Denny Crum led UCLA with 17 points. And Santa Anita has suspended Valenzuela, and Stanford has a new football coach!

  • Blue Heaven, which has lots of fun stuff on it regularly, passes along a video of Roy Campanella on What's My Line?

"I know quite a few Japanese players." - Steve Allen.

The competition: Andruw Jones' hits vs. Chase Utley's homers. Jones leads, 15-12.

    Dodgers at Rockies, 5:05 p.m.

Steve Lyons made a great point yesterday about why HE DOSE NOT want Martin playing 3rd & it's simple really, if Bennett & Martin BOTH get hurt in a game who catches? I don't like the idea of my catcher getting hurt while playing a position he shouldn't be playing to begin with.

22 I don't see why he would get hurt at third. If anything I think it should reduce his overall fatigue level and reduce his chance of injury through the season.

This looks like a short term move until La Roche is ready, but it improves the flexiblity of the team long term knowing Russ can do this. My main complaint would be that we're essenially trading Dewitt for Bennett in the lineup.

34 I think its fair to say that everyone shares your concern but its not unusual to have your catcher play other positions to keep his bat in the lineup. Bench, Torre, Simmons, Berra, are a few examples.

And this was something that was done early in their careers.

I'll be watching how LaRoche does in the next few weeks, if his power picks up and Dewitt should struggle, I think a move could be made.

Joe realizes that we need to keep Martin fresh for the Augsut and September run. Playing him at 3rd is ok with me. Plus, he has said that Martin is the back-up at 3rd. I would have Ethier in instead of Jones, but 18M/yr is hard to ignore. I also wish we would've re-signed Liberthal.

166 The strange thing is that every pitcher, no matter what else he does to any other batter on the Dodgers, attacks Jones the same way, living on the outside part of the plate to get Jones to try and reach out and try to pull the ball.

Jones must have hit a lot home runs in 2005-2006 to left because all he does is try and pull everything.

He had that brief period where he just took those pitches and then when he got some walks but apparently that has stopped for a while.

The only thing left for him to do is to crowd the plate and force pitchers to work the inside of the plate.

And I'm sure in batting practice, he goes with the pitch and hits the ball to right but he probably feels he needs to homer on every at bat so he overswings and finds himself in bad counts.

(I was listening to that game for a bit on the way home.)

Jones seems to fare better in his last at bat or two then he does in his first couple of at bats. Anyone got stats on that? (I can't bear to look at any Andruw Jones stats.)

personally I think that's just a case of your catcher not knowing your pitcher, K/Gou is a strike out pitcher & BENNETT ASKS K/Guo throw off-speed junk, not goot, not good at all.

Loaiza was throwing PEAKING AT 84MPH K/Gou would look like he was throwing 97mph the way Loaiza was throwing but yet he asks for off-speed stuff. not good, oh well.

242 Uh, I was asking what pitch he threw, didn't even see it. I believe the comments before mine were a bit more frustrated about it. I would've called mostly fastballs to start from Kuo, though, as I agree compared to Loiaza that would seem they'd be hard to catch up with. 253 I don't mind people being critical, I think its unfair to single out the catcher when the pitcher has the option to shake off the sign and he also can execute the pitch better.

I don't think Loiaza pitching is beyond criticism, I'm glad they took him out. But there were reasons why Kuo wasn't starting too. I saw him burn 30+ pitches and walk in a batter in the first inning, in Cincinnati he blew up in the 4th.

Probably neither is the answer in the long run, all you want is for the combo to get to the 7th.

305 Steiner has three things going against him in every broadcast.

    1) He's gotta work in the advertising. Vin does not--and should--have to do this.

341 LaRoche has been with Vegas for a couple of days on his rehab assignment, I think the difference is that the Dodgers activated LaRoche today, then optioned him to Vegas.

As much as I seem a pessimist, I am often the idiot optimist. For example as we came out of our win streak from Florida, someone noted we were on a win streak and coming to the top of our rotation, and I eagerly agreed, and then watched a rather shaky Penny followed by Loiaza. We are still winning, so I can't complain, but I have to say the four man rotation may only have the advantage of winning at this point.

Yes, that Hunter deal sure is great a month into the season. Too bad it goes on much longer than that.

517 The Dodgers aren't on the radio out here in Hawai'i. The Giants are (when they're not preempted by UH Rainbow baseball).

We had the full broadcast on HD, but not on regular FS Prime Ticket.

It meant that I had to pay attention at all times, just as though I were in the stands, rather than read or prepare lamb chops and glance up when Vinnie said something interesting.

545 I love how Hunter is painted as some Eckstein-like underdog who "somehow" made it to the majors. The guy has a ton of natural talent and he was a freakin' 1st round pick out of high school so becoming a starter at 23 isn't exactly a struggle.

Nomar, Jones, Pierre, Schmidt. That's a lot of suck for a lot of money.

I really hope somebody gets to ask McCourt about the best decision he's ever made as owner of the Dodgers. That would be a hoot.

As my sister the veteran journalist would say the Tori Hunter article in the LAT, was a nice big wet kiss! I wonder when the people on this site myself included will start advocating for a platoon of JP and Jones?..Not fully serious, but Kemp's defense has improved and he has become the CF sub not JP.

553 Decreasing the amount of foul territory on the field so free agent signings like Jones, Pierre and Nomar can have second chances at making better contact.

Andruw Jones 34 strikeouts and only 4 RBI closely resembles Billy Ashley's rookie season with the Dodgers. Sandy Koufax career numbers are worse however. He struck out 386 times with only 28 rbi.

I gotta say I for one am sad about Jones. He was sorta a guy from a distance I always wish we had, a power hitting defensive wizard in CF! (we got glimpses from Milton)

I was stoked we got him knowing the risks. I'd hate to give up on him but in over 900abs now were looking pretty, pretty....bad. Fat jokes aside, it seems it is more mental than physical.

P-E: Andy LaRoche, who entered the spring competing with Nomar Garciaparra for the starting job, needed to be scratched from the Las Vegas lineup after being informed of being optioned and did not play.

561 Whew, indeed. Don't quite understand the rules around that. He was optioned, then couldn't play because he was there but wasn't? My head hurts. Just glad Andy doesn't hurt.

Man, I forgot what an epic running time Spartacus has.

    Whew.

I'm just guessing, but I think that a player sent to the minors on rehab doesn't count against that team's roster limit. But once LaRoche was optioned to Las Vegas, there needed to be roster space for him.

On the 51s site, LaRoche's status has changed from "Rehab" to "Active." There are 23 players with that status, which I believe is the AAA limit.

Actually, there are 24 players on a AAA roster, although it might drop to 23 at some point. On the 51s site, I found an HTML version of the roster that was updated and had 24 active players including LaRoche. There was also a pdf version as of 5/1 and it had 24 players plus one rehab (LaRoche) and one player on the DL (Martinez).

553 He's answered that question before.

    https://dodgerthoughts.baseballtoaster.com/archives/740691.html

But I think McCourt's answer would be:
    1. Stadium and Fan Experience improvements, including all new seats, revised parking procedures, expansion of concessions and facilities (a 3-year plan 2008-2010), and the recently announced new improvements by 2012.
    2. Hiring of Ned and Joe (maybe not in that order.)
    3. Franchise returning to putting their own players on the field while still being competitive in free agent market.

The only way you find out if teams disagree with any of their moves is when they get rid of that player, manager or GM.

Is Mark Cuban going to admit that the Jason Kidd deal was a bad one, no, Avery Johnson gets canned because he could not make it work.

In a strange way, despite what fans think, I don't think the money those players make is ever an issue, maybe thats wrong but I think as long as it fits within their budget, they figure its the costs of competing.

Yeah, I was really disappointed in Mark Cuban. He says he was into stats and all that, but that Jason Kidd deal was just terrible. Harris is already better than Kidd and will be in the future. Was not Avery's fault. That was a really bad trade.

WHY IS LAROCHE STILL IN AAA?
    2008-05-04 07:59:42
    577.   CodyS
    OK, found the 'explanation.'

"The guys we have now are playing well," manager Joe Torre said. "DeWitt has done a nice job. It's best for LaRoche to play more baseball and get it going a little and play every day."

Apparently 4 games in AAA counts more than his whole career.
