Hey, What Are You Doing With That Feather? Hey - Hey - You Just Knocked Me Over!

The 2008 Los Angeles Dodgers: So wrong, and then when you least expect it, so right.

* * *

Andre Ethier will miss some time later this month for the birth of his first child, reports Diamond Leung of the Press-Enterprise.

Though Ethier, who leads the team in home runs despite being forced to the bench for a chunk of the season, surely will be pulled in two different directions, let's not have a repeat of the embarrassing week in which the Dodgers damned Cesar Izturis' work ethic with faint praise while caring for his family while his wife was hospitalized. Let's trust that Ethier will come back to action as soon as is reasonable. Family comes first.

Its not like they don't have enough outfielders.

The Dodgers plan to have 35 players on the roster at some point this September.

Congrats to the Ethiers.

Good chance that kid will be a model.

Carlos Santana finally got promoted to AA.

Yes, he hit a HR.

Family comes first

Michael: What comes before anything? What have we always said is the most important thing?
George Michael: Breakfast.
Michael: Family.
George Michael: Family, right. I thought you meant of the things you eat.

Izturis' wife had a C-Section, spent a few nights in the hospital and they had another child at home (all the more reason the Dodgers objections were unreasonable).

Hopefully (for us and them) Mrs. Ethier's situation will be simpler. Are they in LA? Most births these days are 1 night in the hospital. I hope there is a Grandma around to help out.

I look forward to congratulating them on the new arrival. Andre your life is about to change, for the better.

Our birth was 2 nights but the C-Section moved it to 4.

If Ethier misses a couple of days let's hope Torre doesn't get confused if his replacement gets a couple of hits.

4 is pretty standard now after a C-section, 1-2 nights after the more natural exit strategy.

At least Juan Pierre can get some playing time under those circumstances without many of us here getting up in arms.

So, who will be Ethier's replacement? The choices are Pierre, Jones, Young, and Repko. Or Blake in the outfield and Dewitt at third. I'd figure Pierre would get the bulk of it.
2008-09-01 08:56:37
11.   Bob Timmermann
I would assume Pierre would get first crack at playing in Ethier's stead.

Expect to see some stolen base percentages and totals go up tonight. Since the beginning of 2007:

Greg Maddux
Allowed 59 of 64 base stealing attempts (92.2%) in 362.1 IP

Chris Young
Allowed 57 of 58 base stealing attempts (98.3%) in 241.1 IP

The lone unsuccessful SB attempt against Young in the last two years was by Rockies' 2B Jonathan Herrera in a May 11 game at Petco Park.

Only Tim Wakefield has allowed more SB (64) since the beginning of 2007. Batters though have at least had to work against the knuckleballer, with a relatively low 78% success rate.

Did anyone see where Ned said he'll continue to trade for infield help even after the waiver deadline ends? Whats the point, aren't Hu and DeWitt good enough?

Good enough, yes. But they're...just...not...old...enough!
2008-09-01 09:39:31
17.   Bob Timmermann
I don't think there's a need for a trade, but the Dodgers could add Tadahito Iguchi for nothing (or next to nothing) and then just go with a Dick Williams style platoon at second base.

Bristol Palin, 17-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin, is pregnant and will keep the baby and marry the father, a senior McCain aide confirms.

Non-Rule 5 oriented question.

Isn't this "statutory rape"? There was a story recently about an African-American youth who went to jail for receiving oral favors from another youth.

Yet, Britney Spears's sister got knocked up "too young", and now the Vice President's daughter did the same. Nothing happened to the former, and I assume nothing will happen to the latter.

Can someone clarify this for me? What's the difference between the African-American youth and these others?

Matt Kemp currently has 36 doubles and 31 steals. He's only the 12th Dodger in history to accomplish this "30-30":

http://www.bb-ref.com/pi/shareit/XF2K

If The Bison™ gets to 40 doubles, he would join Raul Mondesi (1997, 42 2B, 32 SB -- and 30 HR!) and Steve Sax (1986, 43 2B, 40 SB) as the only 40-30 Dodgers.

From the last thread - what I'm curious about is, why would the Giants decline the Dodgers overtures for Omar Visquel?? Won't he likely retire after this season, or be replaced in SF anyhow?

Isn't 18 the age of consent...?
2008-09-01 09:47:02

I guess the age of consent varies by state, as well as by "act".

Your age may vary. The age of the father is relevant. If they're both 17, there is no problem under Alaska law.

25.   Tripon
22 It differs from state to state. Alaska is at 16, "provided the older partner is not in a position of authority."

Which I guess means that the older partner isn't a principal or teacher seeing a high school student. But a college student and a high school student? I suppose that's legal.

18 - California has a very reasonable exemption if the parties are within three years of each other. (I would have been technically a statutory rapist at one point without this, which was a big "whew" moment.)

Hey folks,

I'm looking at going to tonight's game with my kids. Does anyone know of any promotions or passwords to use for discounts on the website? There is a reference to a Miller beer promotion, but I don't know the password. Thanks!

32 , 34 - I recognize this may come very close to Rule 5 category, but you may be interested in Nate Silver's website that breaks down political polling by the Electoral College voting, which is how an actual election would be done.
