Some of you might remember the Losers Dividend. Tonight, we have the Winners Dividend: baseball for baseball's sake, a game with no stakes, played under the stadium-lit glow of success.
Enjoy it - and in addition, feel free to talk unencumbered about the season premiere of a certain wonderful comedy in the thread below.
* * *
Good luck to those of you who are Trojan fans.
The Winner's Dividend, what a lovely thought/loop closing.
Case in point: Game in Corvallis, OR
6-1 White Sox
I saw the play... the ball was hit right off Slowey's forearm. I just hope he's ok, all bones in tact.
1-1 in Milwaukee
I had mixed emotions. A part of me wanted to see the Dodgers clinch up here with myself in attendance, to expunge 1982 and 1991. I attended the whole series in 82 and was at the game in 91 where on a Saturday Trevor Wilson did his Walter Johnson imitation. However, I am looking forward to going to the game Friday night and see how both Kent and Furcal do in the field.
7 I hate those(whatever they are-there is a name). For instance there are 3 2's:To,Too,and Two.
But, the Pac 10 has the #1 team in the country and the team that's beating the #1 team in the country...
RUNS LIKE HECK
Why do I always have to defend Jeff Kent to her? Why do I want to?
1) Health
2) Furcal
Everything else is inconsequential.
i guess a dodger comeback and a pirate win would be great...and itd really be a dandy is SMU some how came back against Tulane
oh and it was good to have the office back
That was catchable.
Love,
- E.S.
And Stults gets an audition!
Checks ESPN.
Wow. They really are getting beat down.
Unbelievable.
and it's still 21-7, Beavers.
Again, no matter what happens, this hurts the reputation of the Pac-10.
I feel like penny is done
You know what's scary? If it was 3 years ago, this game would be called by Daron Sutton.
Of course, as I say that.
The drama in the dome is quite compelling.
While in some ways it doesn't seem like much of an accomplishment winning the weak NL West, it means not having to face some great pitchers in the playoffs. These include a couple from each team, and even a few more, as we analyzed at DT before the season. Avoided from now on are Webb,Haren,Cain,Lincecum,Peavy, Young,Francis,Cook and Zito,Liv Hernandez, Randy Johnson, Scherzer, Hoffman, and some others. Some of these guys get better in the play-offs! And we won't see any of them in a crucial situation.
(Note: I kept wanted to type "OSU" during this post but that would have been extremely confusing.)
And now we have the Twins in the bottom of the ninth.
An hour ago, the Mets gutted it out to come back and win in the bottom of the 10th
I can't believe all this is happening on the same night!
The Pac-10 has a reputation? As a lifelong bruin I hope that the pac-10 reputation keeps going down like this. But its too good a day to show my bitterness.
There is great baseball in wisconsin and minnesota on. I will stick to that.
Wow, this is intense!!! It got shades of the USC game at Arizona State about 3 years ago.
110 I think I have awoken with the shakes a couple of times in the last few weeks dreading what we may have given up for the batting practice, home run derby version of Maddox. I think this will end up something the suits will try anything to disguise and obscure but I fear I will find out soon and have days of nausea.
And I don't think it's wierd that the Dodgers can't get a run off of Peavey.
I just have this awful feeling that the Pads got 2 out of McDonald, Elbert, and Hu for dumping half of Maddux's salary on us.
Hey, we won the West y'know.
Riiiight, right. I was referring to the TV broadcast. Boy, I'd love to hear Uecker's account of the GS later tonight!
Uecker is a broadcasting legend, and I'm really happy for him tonight.
Wow, what a huge comeback for the Twins this week. Sweeping the division leading Sox to take the lead in the Central.
WOW!!!!!
The Dodgers should get plenty of opportunities to tee off against the Pads' bullpen tonight.
Okay, time to eat dinner. Someone ping me if anything bad happens. ;-)
What a day!
178 ...and that's where Eric S and trainwreck part company when it comes to football. ;-)
Nice to see Repko get a hit!
Okay, off to catch up to The Office and dinner and then check back to the end of this one.
Oh, I guess our boys clinched. And I get back just in time to watch Sweeney strike out and the crowd shower him with boos. Hey Joe, I hope you're listening to the fans! Oh, and woot woot!
the rookies still have dora the explorer and kiddie back packs hanging up, must be some more rookie hazing stuff HA
The heck happened to Conor Jackson, is he only going to be above average?
I guess Stanford has an argument that they are the best team in the PAC-10.
192 I agree of course. Though I have to say I have less hard feelings about him personally than I used to. I've seen him interviewed a bunch of times lately where he seems like a decent enough guy and I know people like him in the clubhouse. So I've let go of my "former Giant/PVL jerk" fixation on him. The problem unlike last year, he is not a good PH any more and serves no purpose. So while I might now feel a little bad for him if he's left off... I still think he should be from a personnel standpoint. They're much better off with DY.
But... back to the Office.
So far he has seen Saito is almost ready, but not quite, and Sweeney is just as bad as all year.
as the Preacher says--Sweeney can not be on the roster or Joe is trying to lose.
Underdog, here's the link.

WHERE IS EVERYBODY, WHAT IS GOING ON HERE??
3nd should have been 2nd. My bad (stupid Beavers).
Hu. on the other hand, got there fast but a lucky off line throw probably got hin out with a tag an the back foot.
Be nice to see Broxton do well here. Er, and right then he gives up a double.
We might have to have Broxton come in on Sunday. Yeah, at 9 o'clock, that would be great.
---
Oh well, time to rally in the 9th, let's see what these backups are made of. Every Dodger pitcher tonight gave up at least a run.
Okay, night folks.

Being 20 and being a part of that celebration has got to sweet.

New T.J. Simers article out. Its hilarious that Simers is the voice of optimism, and Plaschke is the pessimistic one.
I love this team. And I really think they could win it all. They certainly think so themselves.
the celebration of an entire season, the ups the downs & everything in between!! i'm glad they didn't cell them selfs short.
ESPN has photos up.
New Plaschke article out.
Okay, really off to bed now.
Hey, a Greg Brock sighting! Welcome. Pull up a seat next week.

By far the most enjoyable experience at a loss ever. I had to leave before the costumes as my dad has work early in the morn, but we stayed for a good half an hour of the celebration. What an ecstatic, happy team. I think I'm going to curb my SABR, calculating fandom ways in the playoffs and really just be happy for this team (and put aside cynicism of the likes of Berroa, Pierre et al). They all appear to be quite a collective and really easy to root for. Things really are coming together at a wonderful time for the boys in blue, and anyone that takes this team for their record only will be surprised.
Whether or not that will lead to even one win, we will see. Better teams have done terrible, worse teams have done better. I have nothing but hope and excitement.
I was very lucky my dad bought the seats he did, as we were fairly close to the home dugout during all of the celebration (just outside of champagne range).
Awesome, Awesome night. Until someone tells me to take it off, I'm wearing my NL West Division Champs hat to work.
Another to check off the "Not going to see" list.
At this point, you almost can't bring him back no matter how much economic sense it seems to make. But hey, they brought back Beimel after he gave an apologetic speech to the team, and he seems to be in everyone's good graces now.

Kent: "And to see it happen now, it's special. These kids are enjoying themselves, and most of them are going through it for the first time. And having a taste of it, this will add to their experience and exposure to what it takes to win."
Step 1: Play in division where all other teams have losing records.
Andre Ethier, a young outfielder who has thrived since Ramirez's arrival, was having lunch at Philippe's in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon when a fan approached him.
The boy's got excellent taste.
Hack sports writing and phony claims of supporting terrorist activities, all rolled into one!
Yes. Like Los Angeles.

Hopefully Steve Sarkisian and Nick Holt are walking home. They should be making it to the Oregon border some time today.

On August 30, after their 8th straight loss, the Dodgers' odds were at 16.6%.
The good news is, we won't have to worry about his ERA at Shea Stadium.

The only drawback to clinching yesterday: We don't get to do it at AT&T Park in front of all these Giants fans I have to live among.
Penny (shoulder) was nowhere to be found during Thursday's pennant-clinching celebration and appears unlikely to return to the Dodgers in 2009, the LA Times reports. The club can buy out Penny's $9.25 million option for $2 million. We won't entirely blame Alyssa Milano for Penny's downfall this year, but considering past suitors included Carl Pavano and Barry Zito among others, perhaps there is something to the "Alyssa Curse". Seriously though, don't look for Penny back in Dodger Blue next year.
Maybe a concerted effort should be given to keeping Alyssa away from Russel Martin?
Martin'll need more help than that.
Still hoping for a win tonight.
We don't technically mean "Reese", but we'd be OK with that too.
But Brad Penny was going out with Eliza Dushku.
Congratulations, everyone! This is so sweet.
