Loaiza and Park - Pray for Dark
2008-04-07 21:20
by Jon Weisman

At least the Dodgers made a game of it in the sixth.

* * *

J.D. Drew's first 28 plate appearances as a Dodger: 0 for 25, three walks, five strikeouts.

Andruw Jones' first 28 plate appearances as a Dodger: 3 for 26, two walks, eight strikeouts.

So there's that ...

* * *

Juan Pierre's career batting average is now .3006.

* * *

Dodger Thoughts, October 3, 2007 (Comment 60):

I want (Mike) Piazza to be our backup catcher and I want Delwyn Young to learn to be our emergency catcher so that both can pinch-hit at will. How's that???

Well, I got half of it.

* * *

Great Joe Morgan story from Joe Posnanski.

Just responding to what Frip wrote in the last thread.

Far as 'Druw, I'd seen some of his struggles in 2007 as well, so my assessment is basically an accumulation of the end of last year plus the ST plus this first week. Granted, we all know Andruw won't hit below the Mendoza line all year, but I'd heard from Braves fans about his tendency to pull the ball too much. Of course, all of this might just mean he starts off slowly, which many players do. I think what I'll do in a moment is run some splits for Druw, year by year from 2005 up to now. I'll report the results in a moment.

It bugs me that Piazza is unemployed. It's not like Gary Bennent will be knocking the fences or anything.

would Penny give up #31 for Piazza?

And could anyone here imagine the crowd reaction the first time the PA guy said, "Your attention, please. Now batting for the Dodgers, number 31, Mike Piazza"?

Tomorrow is another day & Mark Davis will be pitching... I'm also stocked to see Matt Kemp in there tomorrow (hopefully he waits back on the ball the way he was early in ST) With our 5th starter pitching my hopes were not that high.

Kemp is going to get eaten alive by Davis' junk, thus opening the door for a full-on LF platoon of Kemp/Pierre.

Fascinating results. In 2005 and 2006, he hit about the same (about .261/.360/.550/.900 with 20 HRs) in the first half and the second half.

In 2007 here's how it broke down:

1st half 'druw: .202/.299/.384/.684 with 12 HRs
2nd half 'druw: .244/.321/.442/.761 with 14 HRs

9 That's the spirit!

Well, as they said in some old movie, "Tomorrow's another day." I'd be quite happy if the Dodgers took this series, though, yeah, Davis has given them some trouble in the past and of course this is his final game for awhile so the adrenaline will be flowing and the schwartz will be with him.

Last year I had the pleasure of watching Piazza hit in Oakland before he got injured and he was something. Then I saw him in BP in Seattle and granted it is BP, but he was just a line drive gap hitting machine. I would love to see him on the Dodgers as a pinch hitter but it will only be in my dreams.

I'm OK with a Dodger loss today, because I just scored a great deal on tickets at Stubhub for the 15th of April. Infield Loge, Section 144, $24 each. Looks like Kuroda will pitch, and they're giving away Jackie Robinson commemorative t-shirts to the kids. Sure, it's against the Pirates, but you can't have everything.

Dunno if this has been posted before, it bears repeating because it's too dang cute.

From Diamond:

>>Also in the bullpen, rookie Ramon Troncoso has been made responsible for carrying a gnome wearing a Dodgers cap out to 'pen during games. The gnome was introduced to fit in with the new greenery that was put in the Dodger Stadium bullpen for this season. Now, according to Joe Beimel, it's the bullpen's good luck charm.<<

You know, all month I was wondering what happened to Phys and Hud. It looks like they switched places: Rory Markas is working the TV booth while Physioc takes over the Radio broadcast.

Its a strange flip flop, however, I enjoy Rory Markas much more, despite his tepid call of tonight's Walk Off GS. Now, whatever happened to Terry Smith?

28 Why does no one ever want to be a gnome? Sure, they have -2 strength and are slow, too small to carry powerful weapons, and don't carry heavy loads. But they do get +2 constitution, a +1 size bonus to attack and AC, low light vision, and bonuses on illusions, craft, and listen checks as well as combat bonuses against giants and goblins.

Gnomes make good wizards and bards.

2008-04-07 22:29:45

Come to think of it, that may be Tronsco's new found secret. The gnome has been casting illusion spells to make his fastball look like a curve, changeup look like a fastball, etc.

Eric Hull to Boston for minor league SS Christian Lara (presumably, according to Tony Jackson's hint).

Ah... good old D&D baseball where there's the old modifiers:

strength- affects distance ball goes on contact, also used for throwing out baserunners

dexterity- improves bat speed, affects chance of making contact, also also for infielders whether or not they handle ground balls they reach

constitution- ability to play long strings of consecutive games, avoid the DL and be less affected by 'nagging injuries

intellegence- ability to judge flyballs and ground balls off contact

wisdom- judgement of the strikezone, also helps in baserunning judgement

charisma- ability to give good interviews and get better press than is deserved on merit of play

39 How could we have gotten something better for a pitcher who's barely pitched in the majors at all, and didn't do all that well when he did? Not that I don't think the Dodgers should've given him more of a chance, but it's clear there was something about him that didn't thrill their scouts.

Ah, D&D Talk, it doesn't get any nerdier or better than that.

Name the show:
"He thinks being the Dungeon Master gives him the license to mess with our heads."
"Oh, I'm Sorry. Perhaps I should let you encounter kittens and grandmas so as not to upset you."

There's also a good Latin soccer player named Christian Lara.

But on the baseball player:

and a few years ago, Jim Callis wrote in his Red Sox prospects write up: Fluid shortstop Christian Lara made BA's Top 10 Prospects list in both leagues in his first season in the United States.

25 - you and me both, Daniel. After the Tribe got it to 4-2, I switched off the game and flipped to KUSC to prevent the pending concussion when my head beat down on the steering wheel. About ten minutes later I get a call from Helen asking if I were listening to the game. "No," I told her, and lo and behold but Torii Hunter slammed the Angels to victory with his second homer of the game. That's -- that's just crazy talk.

So I had her punch "record" on the DVR, just in case spooks had visited the TV.

Oddly enough, it was the second time in one day that I had given up on a game as won or lost. I was listening to the XM broadcast of the Cubs-Pirates game, and per custom, the home (Pirates) feed was going. You could hear the air leaking out of the broadcast booth after slap-hitter Ronny Cedeno hit a bases-clearing double that put the Cubs up 7-0 in Pittsburgh's home opener.

Of course, the Cubs' pitching staff couldn't hold that lead, and so it went into extras, and the Cubs eventually won it 9-7, the final tally being scored on a humiliating bases-loaded walk.

right now we have one OFer playing well and that's it. I'm not ready to give up on the others just yet. Kemp and Druw BOTH look terrible. Lets give the same patience to Druw as we want management to give Kemp. Sure Druw was bad last year, but that was it. I'm not sure he's gone the way of the Gonzo just yet.
